So yes, get Astral Chain and don’t sleep on it. It is one of the best games not only to come out this year for Nintendo Switch but also for the system in general. Prepare to get lost in the world for countless hours—especially in search of those pesky secrets and collectibles. Getting every S+ rank will also test the most seasoned players out there.
Despite its minor shortcomings, the game still offers over 100s of hours of gameplay that can serve as an excellent way for the tactically minded players out there to get their strategy fix. Players are also rewarded for their time, and those that take advantage of everything on offer and use the new systems to their advantage will excel and become masters of the battlefield.
Another issue stems from most of the game’s new features that we touched on before, such as an island to build on freely and multiplayer, take a while to unlock. You have to finish the first chapter of the game before both these options unlock, which means it could take you up to eight hours+ before you finally get to play with friends.
If Wargroove sells well, and it should, then Chucklefish should have a case with Nintendo to make the next real installment in the Wars series. The studio has already proven that it’s up to the task with its spiritual successor, and fans will surely be eager to see what the team would come up with to revive one of gaming’s biggest series.
This is all combined with an expanded leveling mechanic, which will see you constantly gain additional health, stamina, and deadeye points by just playing the game naturally. You can also bond with your horse by just riding it to increase its health and stamina, as well as unlocking special abilities along the way.
With a massive amount of characters and more on the way in the future as DLC, Soulcalibur VI could have a thriving community behind it for many years to come. It has a bunch of competition from other 3D fighters like Tekken, but the game has enough content to stand on its own and really push into the FGC scene.
It takes the series in a brave direction that isn’t afraid to try something new and embrace its quirky side. We haven’t even talked about how each character has their own dice block that comes with its own risks and rewards and how players can land on a new Ally space, which gives them access to that character’s dice block in a match alongside their own. There’s so much to do, from the various modes to the extra collectibles, so every gaming session is different.
