The gameplay in DC Super Hero Girls is well thought out, as players are given specific characters to run through the city of Metropolis picking up missions and pushing the narrative. DC Super Hero Girls: Teen Power successfully translates the beloved animated TV show into the video game space. While the game might feel a bit fluffy for adults, playing with kids is a blast. With reasonably well-done combat and a ton of side activities, Teen Power is a meatier (and more fun) experience than one might assume-an absolute win for a licensed game.

It’s a comic book! It’s a TV show! No, it’s a video game based on a TV show based on comic book characters! DC Super Hero Girls is a television show surrounding the lives of DC’s most and somewhat beloved heroines and villains, reimagined as teenage students. The Nintendo Switch game DC Super Hero Girls: Teen Power is an extension of that universe in a semi-open world. It has platforming, beat ’em up, and life-sim elements that make for a not-too-deep, but at the same time, kind of surprisingly deep experience.

Despite its shortcomings, it’s clear ToyBox Inc. verily regards its source material enough to not just pump out some crappy beat’em up with no soul. A lot of effort went into creating an experience that fans of the show will recognize and respect. Whether or not they’ll find the game to be fun depends on their tolerance for simple combat, poor AI, and repetitive missions. Speaking as a fan of the show, I can say everything the developers got wrong with DC Super Hero Girls: Teen Power didn’t deter me from enjoying everything they got right.
