Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster is far and away the best possible way you can experience Dead Rising. As a huge fan of the series, I'm thrilled to have a remaster/remake hybrid that's so true to the original.

When it was first released way back in the ancient days of 2008, Capcom’s Dead Rising became a legendary survival “horror” franchise, spanning many sequels and even movies. When Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster was first announced there was a lot of confusion about what it was, looking a lot closer towards being a full-on remake in the same vein as Capcom’s other entries like the phenomenal Resident Evil 4.  However, what we have is exactly what is stated, a high-quality remaster and one ...

Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster is the ultimate release of this now quite-aged zombie game. If you didn’t like the game back when it originally released, then this version isn’t likely to persuade you otherwise, even if the auto-save functionality helps to avoid some pain points. Survivor AI is still hilariously inept, and it’s all too easy to screw yourself over when it comes to certain campaign progress points. But it’s the best-looking version of the game to date, and if you liked whacking zombies with random step ladders, or setting up amusing photos of them with cones on their heads...

Dead Rising's over the top zombie shenanigans still hold up in 2024, but next to the remaster from 2016, this is definitely geared more toward first-time players than returning fans.

The original Dead Rising was a thing of legend back in 2006. It was certainly ahead of its time, delivering an impressive amount of on-screen zombies whilst also turning heads for the amount of Xbox 360 consoles it was red ringing.

The year is 2006. The remake of Romero’s Dawn of the Dead has dropped two years earlier, as did its iconic parody in Shaun of the Dead. Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead is still a few years from dominating our TV screens. Zombie horror love is bubbling. Schoolyard debates are all about how you’d survive in a zombie apocalypse; how you’d bunker down in a shopping mall and use its endless resources in your zombie slaying. Dead Rising comes out this year, letting players live out this v...

Everything you enjoyed from Dead Rising is here and the flurry of meaningful enhancements to the core game make it the complete package. Sure, some lingering quibbles remain from the original game like the time-sensitive gameplay, the pop-in, and bosses that repeat the same predictable attack patterns, yet this remaster refines many of the drawbacks of the original game, and fine-tunes it for a game befitting of the year 2024. Now get out there, snap photos, mow down zombies, and savor all the juicy lunacy Dead Rising has to offer - cos it's a real treat.

Killing zombies is pretty fun, it turns out. It’s so fun, in fact, that there’s a whole genre of games dedicated to the activity. Dead Rising is one of the genre’s best, a glorious romp through fields of bloody carnage. The Deluxe Remaster has amazing new visuals and upgraded controls, although there’s still room for improvement. While this version looks and sounds amazing, the mechanics still feel very 2006.

There’s a certain charm to the Capcom of the PS3 generation; a time when its releases were just as likely to land as they were to heavily miss. For every Devil May Cry 4 or Dragon’s Dogma, there was a Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City to set it back to square one. Nowadays, those extreme gulfs in quality have been reduced to single-point differences between high Metacritic ratings, as the publisher reaches new heights with its Resident Evil and Monster Hunter franchises. Its curiosity to create something a little more “out there” has never quite gone away, though, which is...

Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster is a terrific overhaul to the game that started one of Capcom's beloved series. The balance between modern additions while keeping the old feeling is superb, and anyone returning to the franchise or joining for the first time will have a blast.

There's an art to making early PC, PS2, and Xbox 360 environments look the way players remember them. You don't want to drastically change too much unless you are going for an all-out remake like Silent Hill 2, and you don't want to change too little (or too wrongly) and end up like the odd-looking Grand Theft Auto: Definitive Edition. Dead Rising Deluxe Remastered sits somewhere between the non-Xen portions of the Half-Life remake Black Mesa and the slavishly loyal Metal Gear Solid Delta, with the level design and structure remaining mostly unchanged but containing a number of quality-of-life (QoL)...

Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster is one of those remasters that offers nothing more than updating the graphics to a more modern level. However, graphics can’t sell games alone. Capcom should have given this game a proper remastering with some new content, or just left it dead and buried.

Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster doesn’t take what we had and try to do it drastically different. Instead, it actually stays ridiculously close to where it came from functionally. The progress, survivor locations, points of interest, secrets, Psychopaths, the time they show up, and more are all intact, so much so that seasoned players will feel right at home. That said, many will appreciate creature comforts like durability meters and skippable dialogue. Newcomers are in for a challenge. This game is as unforgiving at the start as it was in 2006, but if you want a solid zombie survival experience akin...

While its older cousins Resident Evil and House of the Dead utilized police and military characters, Dead Rising’s emphasis on average Joes using everyday items as weapons placed it at the center of the zombie genre back in 2006.

Some of Dead Rising's morbid charm is lost in translation, but for the most part, Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster is a solid re-do of the 2006 original. The quality-of-life improvements will be greatly appreciated by all and revisiting Willamette Mall is a nostalgic time for old-school 360 fans. Here's hoping that we don't have to wait long to see another entry in the series.

If you are a fan of Dead Rising there’s a good chance you will really like this remaster. If you’ve never played the game before and want a fun zombie slaughter simulation, this game still holds up well, but you’ll have to look past some of the game’s flaws and remind yourself that it is still bound by 360-era design.

Dead Rising still has the occasional frustration of survivors’ AI not working very well or zombies feeling a little too relentless, but the Deluxe Remaster has improved or tweaked nearly every aspect of the original. Dead Rising was always an underrated masterpiece in my eyes, but with this remaster it feels like it has the polish to be truly deserving of that title, and the streamlined approachability means it can appeal to an entire new generation of fans. It’s a game that was clearly ahead of its time, both narratively and mechanically, and Capcom has done a brilliant job of...

Unlike the Resident Evil series, CAPCOM's other foray into zombie-focused games, the Dead Rising franchise, hasn't seen the same level of success despite getting a loyal following of hardcore fans. Following the fourth entry in the series released back in 2016, photojournalist Frank West seemed to have joined Regina from Dino Crisis and Ryu from Breath of Fire in the graveyard of forgotten CAPCOM's characters, and with the protracted silence on the franchise, it really looked like Dead Rising was done for good. That was not the case. In 2024, the Japanese company confirmed that the first entry in the...

Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster pretty much does what it says on the tin, but we were hoping for a little bit more from the game's 'Deluxe' moniker. The new visuals and performance improvements are nice, and the game's fresh control schemes and autosave options make this the best way to play Dead Rising in the modern era. However, the game's ever-controversial timer feels even more restrictive in 2024, and we feel like other dated elements such as the constant load screens could have also been brushed up for this new re-release. If you're looking for an excuse to replay the...
