Professional reviews from gaming critics

Deadpool VR is an arcadey hack and slash adventure with the promise of a Deadpool that never stops talking. While some of the cutscenes are longwinded and the melee gameplay isn't great the shooting and movement options allow you to set up fun combos. There's a lot of replayability, but long levels might discourage you from too much backtracking.

Wade Wilson has been successfully revived on the big screen in a movie that’s full of amusing one-liners, stylish action, and heaps of fan service. Weak villains and an unsatisfying revenge plot ultimately hold it back from being something more distinctive, but Deadpool delivers a large dose of unwholesome fun.

It’s a good little game, and not really anything more than that. It’s not as “awesome” as Deadpool himself may tell you, but hey, it’s about ten thousand times better than X-Men: Destiny, and I think we can all be thankful for that!

Juvenile quips, over-the-top gore, fourth wall breaking referential humour, and excursions into insanity all paint the picture of the perfect Deadpool game, and in some ways this is it. You'll laugh wholeheartedly at the jokes and ridiculous scenes, but despite the excellent realisation of the character, the highly repetitive and overall subpar gameplay makes High Moon Studios' latest release hard to recommend to everyone.

Fans hoping for a Deadpool game that does justice to the character are in luck, since you are without question the ones High Moon has crafted their game to please; those looking for a strongly-plotted, rich and expansive third-person action game that takes at least some of its own content seriously should certainly look elsewhere.

Marvel’s Deadpool character has become a bona fide fan-favourite – not bad given the label’s extensive roster of much-loved superheroes and that he’s only been around for 20 years. The villain-turned-hero combines many of the X-Men’s best abilities (rapid healing, teleportation, superhuman strength) with a unique sense of humour and the ability to “break the fourth wall”, addressing his audience directly in a series of witty one-liners. All of which is crammed into the Deadpool game from High Moon Studios, the team that made the recent (and surprisingly decent) Transformers games.

In which the whole is less than the sum of its parts, and the parts aren't very good to begin with.

Manic, unpredictable, insane. That's Deadpool in a nutshell. Both the character and his video game revel in abject silliness, and just like the comic book, anything completely random can happen at any given moment in Deadpool: the game. It's for this very reason that you'll either love Deadpool or hate it. But if you're a fan of the comic books, you'll no doubt find a lot to love about High Moon's unhinged and delirious hack 'n' slasher.

As you slice your way through enemies you’ll earn DP (Deadpool Points) that can be used to upgrade your weapons or Deadpool himself. All the weapons share the exact same types of upgrades which makes upgrading feel a bit annoying since there’s no difference between upgrading your shotgun, katanas, or SMG. To earn the big points though you’ll need to rack up a big combo and then “bank it” by letting the combo end. The problem with this is that there are many enemies who will shoot you from a distance while their buddies get in your face and their stray bullets can end your combo annoyingly quic...

A couple of variations to game play are offered which help change the pace and keep game play interesting though segments of side-scrolling chapters, top view areas, a very fun rail shooter and stealth, few sections offer a stealth approach and frankly I wish there was a couple more because every stealth kill is downright hilarious! Unfortunately not enough of these are present to dismiss the mundane gameplay of general play.
