.Hack//G.U. Last Recode Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
.hack//G.U. Last Recode destroyed any expectations that I had for a remastered RPG from ten years ago. The mechanics and visuals work well and with an increased speed and reworked mechanics getting through the game's low moments aren't so bad. I always tend to prolong beating RPGs because I get too attached to the characters, but the way that Vol. 4 Reconnection concluded the series was as good as a conclusion can be as I found myself content and ready to move on to the next adventure.
Character depth and a plot that stands the test of time. .Hack//G.U. Last Recode on the Switch is a masterfully ported game that will be sure to engage you for hours on end. You will wish you were in “The World” for real. The Switch does have some hiccups here and there from frame stutters to wonky aspect ratio messing up the mini map.
An excellent remastered collection that fixes many shortcomings of the original three PS2 RPGs.

.hack//G.U. Last Recode is an all-in-one collection of the 2006 trilogy, packed together with a brand new epilogue episode, .hack//G.U. Vol. 4: Reconnection. While it has aged a bit in the past decade, .hack//G.U. remains one of the most memorable RPG adventures around.
It’s hard to believe that it’s been 15 years since the .hack franchise began. It was a franchise with a really unique setting – you were put in the shoes of someone playing a fictional MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) called The World. As well as being able to play in The World, you could also log out and check your emails as well as read news articles and reply to forum posts. There was an impressive amount of detail put into all aspects of its ‘game within a game’ setting. Unfortunately, aside from a few mobile titles released only in Japan, not a lot seems to have hap...
The .hack series is still today one of the most interesting cross-media projects ever created. Starting with the .hack//Sign anime, fans of the series have come to love The World, a fictionary MMORPG, and its true nature, which is far from being a simple playground where players can go adventuring together. Those who have missed the original PlayStation 2 release of the .hack//G.U. trilogy can now enjoy them with several enhancements with the .hack//G.U. Last Recode remaster, which includes an additional volume that ties some loose ends while providing a little bit of fan service that definite...
CyberConnect2's PlayStation 2 trilogy of RPGs is back and remastered for gamers who may have missed it the first time around. Plus, this release comes with a new volume and other goodies to help immerse you in its intricate universe.
.hack//G.U. Last Recode‘s intended audience is almost certainly established fans. It’s a solid remaster that looks great and runs smoothly. But it’s still a dated JRPG that dominates dozens of hours with sub-par combat and repetitive beats. If you have never experienced The World, it’s unlikely that Last Recode will pull you in. For those that never wanted to log out, it’s a decent way to reconnect.
There is also a collection of videos that parody scenes from the games, as well as the much more serious Terminal Disc. The Terminal Disc, which originally came with limited editions of the first game, contains four videos that give a recap of the first .hack quadrilogy, along with additional videos unlocked as you progress through the games. These videos are excellent if you enjoy the .hack lore and are a wonderful way to catch up if you skipped the original .hack games.
