Dredge boasts addictive inventory management in a not-so-cozy, otherworldly fishing experience. The game's surreal story kept us guessing thanks to mysterious characters, Lovecrafting undertones, and a constant, creeping fear of the dark.

Ultimately Dredge is a charming, atmospheric game with excellent exploration gameplay and clever puzzles punctuated by tense moments of fear and dread of what lurks in the dark. I just wish it leaned more into being the game it pretended to be with a larger focus on its simulation gameplay. Because in the end, Dredge makes you think you’re getting a fishing sim with horror elements when what you’re really getting is an enjoyable adventure puzzle game with tacked-on simulation elements.

Dredge managed to succeed my already high expectations with the sheer amount of charm and attention to detail. My inner Call of Cthulhu nerd kept getting so inspired that I started taking notes for my next TTRPG campaign, but I can't help but wonder if they weren't the one inspired by it in the first place. Some of the settings and events seem to be nodding towards some adventure books I've read in preparation for my game, as do some of the letters in bottles you can find throughout the ocean, but then again these are pretty common themes in...

Dredge is an indie horror gem that will be looked upon fondly by anyone with an affinity for adventure and mystery. Every part of the game is engaging and otherworldly, yet distinctly down to earth. From the charming low-poly graphics, to the deeply emotion-invoking soundtrack, to the heartfelt story, Dredge understands how to make the player feel immersed in its dark yet beautiful world.

Dredge successfully balances a rather serene fishing game with something rather more dark and sinister lurking beneath the surface. Despite the spooky eyes, tentacles, and things going splash in the night, it's really quite relaxing.

There is something so alluring about the Lovecraftian Eldritch horror themes in video games. The blend of insanity and the manifestation of crazy cosmic horror is such a great theme to play with in games. Mostly due to the freedom a developer has to really play with the players minds themselves. The slow slip into madness and horror is something I love, and Black Salt Games does a great job at it in Dredge.

Mysteriousness proves tricky to sustain, but Dredge reels it in and mostly keeps it aboard through its run. Bolstered by beautiful music and visuals, the game features engaging episodic quests that promote exploration. With addicting fishing mechanics and the promise of something new on the horizon, the game sails full steam ahead with fish to catch and secrets to uncover. Dredge may have some dings in its hull, but this boat is more than seaworthy.

A seemingly innocuous fishing management game turns into an eldritch horror RPG as Dredge sets sail into release on PC and console. Coming to us from New Zealand studio Black Salt Games, this unnerving title will test both your inventory management as well as your sanity management as it dives deeper into the horrific absurdist with each new voyage. Proving to be both engaging and unique, Dredge is a bright light in a sea of spooks and a title that shouldn’t be overlooked.

With its masterful mixing of cozy fishing gameplay and horror elements, Dredge is pretty much a slam dunk of a debut for Black Salt Games. The style in its presentation and gameplay shows competence and confidence, and I hope they follow Dredge up with something great very soon.

On its surface, Dredge promises a fishing adventure and there is no doubt that there's plenty of fish out there to be caught. However, the sinister undercurrents are truly what hooked me, like a voice in the fog that constantly calls me back to explore further, fish deeper, and embrace the madness of its twisting tale. This premise may not be for everyone, but for this new angler on the dock, Dredge is definitely one hell of a catch of the day.

Dredge is one of those rare treasures: a game unlike anything else that completely captures your attention with its intriguing world and simple yet captivating gameplay. We could keep hunting for rare fish forever, and we only wish there were more secrets for us to uncover; new parts of the world for us to explore. But when our only complaint is “we want more of it”, it’s clear we have something rather special on our hands.

Dredge is a dreadfully enticing horror experience draped in the skin of a fishing game. The way Black Salt Games executes its terrors of the deep should be respected because the developer has created a slow-burn dread that utilizes the best aspects of Lovecraft’s cosmic horror.

I just don’t think Dredge is all that it could be. While the sea-harvesting foundation is solid and well thought out, nothing else around it has much depth. There’s a dearth of imagination surrounding it, which I found disappointing. The plot is lifeless, the gameplay is one-note, and it never really picks up speed. However, if you want a more relaxing take on horror, Dredge might be worth hauling up from the depths.

Graphically the game doesn’t aim too high technically and makes up for it with a commitment to a particular style. The waves, wind, and backdrops look painted and it all runs at a stable framerate and clean resolution. Technically the game is rock solid. My only gripe is one that isn’t major, and that’s the heavy use of chromatic aberration. The madness system in the game utilizes CA a lot and it can be headache-inducing for me at times. I believe you can turn it off in the options as well as be able to lessen screen shake. I had...
