FIFA 19 is the finest playing game in the series. The Journey may be after running its course, but the fluid representation of football, the added element of Dynamic Tactics, and the madness of the updated Kick Off mode are all wonderful.
Once again story-based The Journey eclipses FIFA’s unremarkable on-pitch improvements.
A game of two halves.
In an annualized franchise, many gamers question if a yearly iteration is 'skippable' or not. There is little room for doubt this year: FIFA 19 is a must-have for fans of the beautiful game. EA Sports has injected plenty of new life into the franchise with its fun take on the new kickoff mode and the long-awaited re-acquisition of Champions League and Europa rights, and has greased the wheels of a smooth machine with significant upgrades to the game engine, tactics, and its popular modes like Ultimate Team and The Journey.
EA proves it can innovate and not just iterate with their best FIFA offering to date.
FIFA 19 feels like the culmination of the last few years of FIFA games, and not just from the conclusion of The Journey’s interwoven story. The Champions League gives EA the opportunity to show their presentation skills and bed in a new commentary partnership, a shakeup for the main online set up of Ultimate Team, and the surprisingly fun new Kick Off mode. Some new ideas don’t quite come together, but there’s a reason why FIFA is the biggest game in town.
FIFA 19 is another great entry in EA’s long-running football series. With the addition of the Champions League and improved gameplay mechanics, it provides enough realism to its presentation while still being fun to play. The Journey: Champions and FUT may not be considerable deviations from last year but it still gives players more to do; it also helps that both of these modes are This iteration isn’t one that completely changes the game, instead makes a few adjustments to make the most enjoyable FIFA yet.
EA hasn’t reinvented the wheel but they’ve reimagined what a fun football sim can be, with innovative game modes and gameplay tweaks that will make even seasoned FIFA vets rethink their approach.
Over the past few years, FIFA fans have generally known exactly what to expect from each new release. The polished overall experience will be added to incrementally with small quality of life tweaks, Alex Hunter’s journey will continue, and live content will ensure that Ultimate Team only grows in popularity. However, each year also sees gameplay issues that aren’t addressed, the play can feel inconsistent and unreliable, and any on-field changes feel insignificant, leaving an impressive spectacle that doesn’t hold up under close inspection. The changes touted for FIFA 19 also seemed quite underwhelming at first, but in action they have created fluid, balanced, and challenging gameplay, without losing any of the presentation flair the series is known for, making for the best FIFA package we’ve played in years.
Zidane’s Real Madrid might have won three Champions League titles in a row, but did they change the way people think about how football should be played? No.
Heaving with all that content, and impressing on the pitch where it counts, this is the best FIFA has been in years. I won’t deny I’m more than a little in love with it. The highest praise I can give is that I wasn’t expecting to say that this year. Well played.

But we’re being really harsh there, as these really are quibbles. There’s so much to see and do and everything is so well executed that it feels relatively cheap at the asking price. If you really are sitting on the fence as to what football game you should be buying then you really need look no further than FIFA 09. Even if you’ve bought PES for the last 148 years in a row, if you don’t give FIFA a look in, you really are missing out on something special. Can’t say more than that, ...
