From the moment I started playing Injustice: Gods Among Us it was clear that the game was an extremely well thought out game that would appeal to the masses. NeatherRealm were extremely careful in staying true to the character and worlds of these DC characters and they did so brilliantly. Even though I felt that the traditional fighting aspect may have been a small step from Mortal Kombat, There are so many little extra touches that will make you keep going back for weeks to come. If you’re into fighting games or have even the slightest interest in the DC universe then you have to pick this up.

Injustice: Gods Among Us does a lot of things right. From a fantastic storyline, to a plethora of content, but minor balance and online bugs stop it from being the best it can be. Regardless, Injustice offers just about anything from the hardcore fighter to the beginner.

When it comes to the fighting game genre, you're often forced to select your preferred type. Are you a player of 2D or 3D titles? Tekken or Dead or Alive? Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat? Each series has its own unique identity, restricting its audience to a specific brand. As such, you'd expect Injustice: Gods Among Us, the latest brawler from NetherRealm Studios, to cater to Mortal Kombat fans, but instead it's a much more ambitious fighter, incorporating elements from multiple different titles, in order to deliver something familiar yet unique.

Playground scores are about to be settled. Injustice: Gods Among Us mixes the fighting prowess of gaming’s goriest brawler, Mortal Kombat, with a roster of DC Comics stars to finally give everyone a chance to see whether Batman or Superman would win in a fight. Marvel fighting games have enjoyed something of a long and storied history over the years thanks to Capcom, while DC's heroes have been by and large underrepresented in the fight genre beyond the likes of Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. With NetherRealm successfully bringing Mortal Kombat back into the spotlight a couple of years ago, the studio has turned its attention back to the DC universe for the dramatically titled Injustice: Gods Among Us. This time DC's best of the best take the limeli...

NetherRealm really nailed the art style down with this game with the game having a nice gritty/realistic look without falling too far into looking cartoony. Characters like Grundy look really menacing and the designs for most of the characters look pretty damn good; there’s also a surprising amount of detail on all the models. The only thing that’s a bit weird with the graphics is anytime the game jumps into a cutscene; textures start to look a bit muddy and the character models clash horribly with the environment if it’s not one of the fighting stages.

Going into Injustice, I worried that as much as I enjoyed the game that I would wish it was just a Mortal Kombat game instead. My greatest fear was unfounded. As much as I enjoyed the game’s outlandish story, intense combat, and various modes, I can only imagine how much more it will mean to someone who is also a DC junkie. Instead of asking for Sub-Zero to appear in Injustice, I am now prepared to ask for Aquaman DLC in the next Mortal Kombat. Because Aquaman feeds his enemies to sharks. And that’s pretty badass.

Slight cosmetic blemishes aside, Injustice: Gods Among Us brings it and brings it hard. With a story mode that is beyond any fighting game of its time and plenty of incentives, any competing titles will have to try hard to do better this year. Its stunning atmosphere goes hand in hand with precise controls, impacting moves, and a solid online presence. Hell, this story is enjoyable just to watch without the interaction. Luckily, this is a game, though; the gameplay is more than welcome.

Given the success NetherRealm had with Mortal Kombat, it would have been easy to clone it and swap in new characters... and yet it didn't. Instead, it kept what worked and built upon it to make Injustice: Gods Among Us an exciting, unique-feeling fighter at the beginner level, and a deeper, more interesting one at the advanced level. Story mode is a pleasant surprise, but the real reason to play is the thrill of harnessing the god-like powers of some of the most overwhelming figures in the comic realm. The jury’s still out on whether or not it presents a fair fight, but it’s definitely an enjoyable one.
