Professional reviews from gaming critics

Just Cause 4 is a title that is worth experiencing for anyone who just wants to have a good time watching explosions and flying around a beautiful world.

Dec 7, 2018 Read Review

Just Cause 4 is the most essential game in the series, perfecting years of blowing things up in the most creative ways. While the narrative doesn't have any lasting impact, the overall package delivers as video game comfort food.

If you've played a past Just Cause game, then you likely have experienced all of the best moments that Just Cause 4 is putting on display. A new region, some new gear, and a new checklist of tasks to accomplish isn't enough to make up for the grueling hours you'll have to put in doing the same tiresome missions over and over again just to reach its conclusion. Just Cause 4 had so much more potential than the final product we were given, and while it's still fun to goof around with the toys it gives you, that's about where the enjoyment begins and ends.

Beyond the occasional crashes and the visual flicker, the game ran fairly well with so many things happening on screen. I never noticed any significant slowdown, even with the game’s weaponized weather completely upending the area around me. At worst, there’s a slight framerate dip with massive rapid explosions, but nothing that impacted my gameplay experience. Overall, Just Cause 4 is a very entertaining package and its potential won’t be fully tapped for a long time.

Just Cause 4 is the best entry in the series to date, offering spectacular free-wheeling destruction on a scale that’s not been attempted before. Rico remains one of gaming’s most enjoyable protagonists, but more than ever before, it’s really all about what he’s capable of doing rather than the events unfolding around him.

Despite a few inconsistencies and missed opportunities, Just Cause 4 is still insanely fun and worth your time.

I'm just at a loss as to how this has happened. Just Causes have been buggy, sure. But they've never felt at least six months from finished. I cannot fathom how this wasn't lengthily delayed, because it's in such a dismal state. Although that said, even if the bugs and AI were fixed, it would still leave behind a version of Just Cause that barely changes anything you actually do since the third edition, yet has made every aspect of doing it so astronomically more annoying. What went wrong? How did such an established and entertaining series end up in such a quagmire? Gosh I'd love to know.

Dec 4, 2018 Read Review

Just Cause 4 certainly isn’t a bad game, but it feels a bit like a wasted opportunity. The fun you can have outside of the game’s campaign shows that the world and the tools you’re given work in harmony with each other, but you’re never given the freedom to really make use of them during missions. It’s like being given a box full of LEGO but then being told you can only use the old-fashioned system bricks to build with; you know there’s fun to be had, but your creativity is stifled. Buy Just Cause 4 if you want to set off epic explosions and simply have fun playing the fool. Don’t buy it if yo...

A strong hook tethered to a meager cause.

A game with a lot of promise and not much else. Riddled with technical issues and visually underwhelming to the point of being barely playable.
