Mega Man Legacy Collection Reviews

This is another very impressive entry in Capcom’s Legacy Collection and if you’re either looking for a walk down a saber-slashing memory lane or trying to blast rogue robots for the first time, then you won’t be disappointed by this retro-style platformer.

Digital Eclipse did a great job with all the details in Mega Man Legacy Collection, presenting the original games in their best possible light, while tossing in a handful of extra features and challenges on top to sweeten the deal. The rewind feature is a welcome inclusion that helps to mitigate the difficulty of some of the games, and the overall quality of the series difficult to dispute. We would highly recommend you pick this one up, all the included extra features coupled with the ability to play these games both at home and on the go make it a no-brainer.

Mega Man Legacy Collection on the 3DS is a great collection of games and extras, but players who already have the Virtual Console games might be hard pressed to spend $30 on 54 challenges that have little replayability without any online functionality and leaderboards.

As such, Mega Man Legacy Collection feels incomplete. It doesn’t feature any of the games that launched after the heyday of the NES era and even then brings them to modern systems with performance warts and all. Yet somehow with the six games it does bring to the table, it provides enough for fans to indulge in with challenges and archive artwork, while also bringing in new players with conveniences such as the save system. For those wishing to step back to an era where these games were king, this is a good way to experience Mega Man’s origins.

Still holding up after nearly 30 years, and still, every bit as challenging, Mega Man Legacy Collection is a great buy for the asking price. Even if it is a bit insecure with extra features.

But at $15 on current-gen and PC digital storefronts, Mega Man Legacy Collection is an essential purchase for anyone with even a passing interest in Capcom’s classic series. The presentation is top notch, in that it doesn’t tamper with the visuals one bit, and the new additions offer replayability that isn’t simply taking on Dr. Robotnik for the 20th time. Granted, Mega Man has always been a challenging game, and less familiar gamers may pick the Collection up and put it right back down. However, those who treasure the blue bomber will love every bit of Mega Man Legacy Collection.

With a $15 price tag, Megaman Legacy Collection is a good deal for those interested in a challenging, retro gaming experience.

Overall, the Mega Man Legacy Collection is a great addition to a Mega Man fan's library, or a great way to finally play the classic Mega Man games if you haven’t already.

For both longtime fans of the series and newcomers experiencing the struggle against the nefarious Dr. Wily for the first time, what Capcom have essentially wrought with the Mega Man Legacy Collection is a consummate assembly of the franchise’s 8-bit era outings. Brought back to life in their original retro splendour and meaningfully augmented by both a longevity expanding challenge mode and a museum mode that files the depths of the series considerable history, minor flaws and a crushing, ...

The project came about when Capcom was approached by the Digital Eclipse studio who had created a game engine that could faithfully reproduce NES 8 bit games on PCs and the current consoles: PS4, XBox One, and 3DS. This is why there are six Mega Man games in this collection as compared to the eight for the PS2 Mega Man Anniversary Collection released back in 2004. That collection had two extra games released from other systems.

Mega Man Legacy Collection is an object lesson for how game compilations should be engineered, providing rock-solid adaptation to a new platform, respecting the material’s historic context, and exercising restraint. I recommend it both to Mega Man fans and to players who haven't had the privilege of experiencing these exemplary games.

Mega Man Legacy Collection feels incomplete, even at the relatively low asking price. You get the first six titles that form the basis of the Mega Man Legacy (which is apt, given the compilation's name) but other than an entertaining challenge mode, there doesn't appear to be much in the way of love shown to the franchise here. This could have and should have contained way more than it actually does, even if the included titles are as enjoyable as they ever were. We imagine that if past performance is to be used as an indicator, a Mega Man X Collection and Mega Man Zero Collection will end up being sold separately way down the line and in a post-Rare Replay market, that sort of approach isn't going to really go down as well as it used to.

Despite Capcom's best efforts to forget that he even exists, Mega Man's popularity with players endures regardless of the lack of fresh outings. Such is the gaming public's adoration of this pint-sized hero that they will gleefully crowdfund spiritual successors (Mighty No. 9, we're looking at you) in lieu of a genuine Blue Bomber adventure. Thankfully, Capcom is perfectly happy to mine the back catalogue of this iconic character for profit, so in addition to the many re-releases that we've seen on services like Nintendo's Virtual Console, we're getting Mega Man Legacy Collection, a compilation of the six 8-bit titles which arguably established the series as one of gaming's greats.

After booting the game up I was inspired to beat all six games again and work on the challenges, so the Mega Man Legacy Collection did its job. I’d really like to see more Legacy packs down the line from Capcom — perhaps with a bit more bravado in terms of extras and alternate modes of play.
