Minecraft has come a long way in the past decade. From going through its alpha and beta stages, to getting a full release, a Tell-Tale Games story, and even a movie. Yet, for some reason, Minecraft Dungeons still felt like it was completely out of left field when it was announced and we saw its Diablo-clone style of gameplay. It wouldn’t be fair to discredit the game before getting to play it though. To be fair, it was actually one of the most highly anticipated games of the year, behind ga...

Minecraft Dungeons is a competent hack n' slash RPG; nothing more, nothing less. It has the outward charm of the creative masterpiece that inspired it, but very little depth. What is here is fun for a time in solo or co-op, but don't expect it to hold your attention long-term.

At its heart, Minecraft Dungeons is the sort of release that feels like it rides on the coattails of greater games a little too much. If this game did not have the Minecraft branding, it’s not much of a leap to assume that it would scarcely garner any attention based purely on its own merits. The gear system, combat, level design, and presentation is all fine and entertaining in its own right, but there’s little here that we could point to that elevates this game alongside or above peers such as Torchlight II, Diablo III or Path of Exile. Bearing...

Minecraft Dungeons is the latest spin-off of Mojang’s iconic franchise. This time around, you get a CRPG-lite that takes on the formula made popular by Diablo. It seems like a winning idea, and I enjoyed my preview of the game at E3 last year. However, I expected that there would be more to Minecraft Dungeons upon its full release.

Minecraft Dungeons is a blast to play. You have all the mechanics of a fun dungeon crawler with a cute aesthetic. I just hope they add in more things to do in the game before people get bored and move on.

What is currently in the game is extremely fun, easily one of the most accessible and engaging action RPGs of the generation. The mixture of Minecraft aesthetics and fast-paced ARPG tropes creates a familiar yet unique formula that can satisfy purists and newcomers alike, both in solo and co-op. The choices made to have a game that accommodates less experienced players takes a toll on the title’s variety and depth, but at the low entry price point of 19.99 USD/EUR or through Game Pass it seems like a no-brainer. There’s certainly a lot we hope to see in future updates...

A lightweight dungeon crawler that keeps Minecraft's playful humour.

Some critics, though, say the game can drag in the middle and be too much of a grind, despite its short length. This could be attributed to the fact that Minecraft Dungeons doesn’t seem to do much in terms of innovation. As well, there is no crafting or mining in the game, which is kinda weird.

Minecraft Dungeons is a roller-coaster ride of an action/RPG, giving new players a fairly deep representation of the genre while providing veterans a nice diversion from traditionally grimdark trappings. Minecraft’s familiar world, tools, and other elements seamlessly make the transition from the mainline series. Its suite of enemies is a natural fit for this type of game, and Mojang introduces new members of the menagerie to fill out a few missing archetypes. Unfortunately, Minecraft Dungeons’ padded-out midgame is repetitive even among its grind-heavy peers. The first big drop in this ride had me screaming, but it wasn’t from exhilaration.

Minecraft Dungeons offers a very Diablo-like dungeon-crawling experience without the gore and grimdark atmosphere.

Minecraft Dungeons is a capable all-ages dungeon crawl that, while doesn't use its license to anything like its full potential (see Dragon Quest Builders 2 for how to do it right), is still good fun once it gets moving. The variety of enemies keeps you on your toes, and the various skills and weapons make for plenty of experimentation in figuring out the best way to take them on. Each level has at least a couple of secrets to chase after, ranging from obvious to head-scratchingly obscure, and finding everything while collecting all the gear will keep players busy for...

There’s nothing wrong with a little nostalgia, but even by the time I’d faced down the Arch-illager in his tower - no more than a handful of hours after starting - I was already sick of Redstone Golem mini-bosses, and Dungeons seemed to have exhausted its borrowed ideas. Like Diablo, this is a game designed for multiple playthroughs on increasing difficulties, but few players will feel compelled to return to a seam that’s all dried up after a single day’s exploration.

Minecraft Dungeons is a casual ARPG that's perfect for fans of the series. Although it has pretty visuals and a challenging late-game difficulty, the loot variety is disappointing and the game's overall replay value doesn't seem high.

A modern day alternative to Gauntlet, whose innate shallowness and overreliance on random generation is balanced out by some fun combat and great co-op action.

Minecraft Dungeons could easily have been “My First Dungeon Crawler”, but it’s so much more than that. It does a great job of taking the genre’s hooks – the waves of enemies, the pervasive drive for better loot – and makes them palatable and approachable for a wide-ranging audience. It’s perfect family gaming, but if you crank the difficulty up prepare for an epic beatdown, and the epic rewards to go with them.

Minecraft is basically the biggest game on Earth at this point. Hundreds of millions of people have played it in one form or another, and there’s no sign of the franchise slowing down anytime soon. So it’s only natural that Mojang would want to expand that empire into other genres. Thus, Minecraft Dungeons. All of the frantic fun of a Diablo-style ARPG, with none of the complex barriers to entry. Yet, how well does Minecraft hop the fence into action RPG territory? Aside from a few hitches, the transition is a smooth one.

Minecraft Dungeons is short, sweet, and uncomplicated. And for a genre with a history of complex menus and an overwhelming desire to crush you under numbers, that can be a mixed bag. Keeping the blocky aesthetic of the source material should be a telltale sign that this isn’t the most complicated game, but while Minecraft proper has surprising depth as demonstrated by the most serious builders, this dungeon crawler spin-off simply does not. Still, Minecraft Dungeons features crisp design and frantic combat that make for a fun, albeit short game to play with friends.

A tightly designed, well polished beginner's ARPG, with more than enough fun to justify the price for veteran click-stabbers, too.

I’m too old to get the appeal of Minecraft proper, even though my young nephew tried to get me across it before he himself abandoned the property for Fortnite. Dungeon crawlers like Diablo aren’t exactly my cup of tea either, so I wasn’t sure that Minecraft Dungeons would be for me. In the short time I’ve had with Mojang’s latest — and I’m talking mere days here — I’ve found it certainly holds its own, good enough to capture the attention spans of a small group of friends i...

Even though the campaign might be short and the mechanics a tad bit shallow for an ARPG, Minecraft Dungeons still manages to dazzle at times with its unique charm. With online and local/couch co-op multiplayer, you can have a blast and enjoy your romps with this family-friendly offering.

Minecraft Dungeons is a great game for all ages. While its simplicity hinders it from truly being an excellent dungeon crawler, it is one that you can enjoy with just about anyone. Its intuitive gameplay, replayability, and familiar environments and enemies make it a great starting point for anyone wanting to get into this beloved genre.

Still, Minecraft Dungeons is undoubtedly entertaining, and despite all my gripes I find myself being pulled back in, drawn to take on ever-more difficult challenges as I grind toward better gear. In particular, I'm eagerly awaiting my friends to join me. It's just a shame there isn't more content for us all to dive into together when the time comes.

Young or old, whether you’re a fan of OG Minecraft or not, there’s a lot to love about Minecraft Dungeons. Exploring its vast levels is a delight, and coming across new loot is just as fulfilling here as it is in any loot-based game. Smooth controls and a range of abilities make it an absolute joy to play; even when you die, you’ll be eager to pick yourself back up and start again. Considering the game’s asking price, Minecraft Dungeons should be a must-buy for anyone who enjoys a good dungeon-crawling adventure.

Few games have staying power the way Minecraft does. What spawned a genre, and even became the world’s best selling game, surely had more creative ideas to follow. Follow it did, with other video game forays such as an episodic Telltale series of the IP and more recently a mobile AR game. Now, Minecraft Dungeons, a dungeon crawler set all within the Minecraft world, is the latest to appear. With thanks to a review code from Microsoft, I got to jump in. Thankfully, it’s a welcome adventur...

Minecraft Dungeons is a beautiful and fun dungeon crawler with a simple but tried-and-true set of systems in place. It plays it extremely safe, though, without bringing anything mining or crafting spins to the genre to accompany Minecraft’s signature look and feel. Still, it's just so damn charming, and so fun, it's hard to fault it for going the safe route. With tons of loot, secret areas to uncover, and progressively more aggressive difficulty levels to unlock, Minecraft Dungeons has a fair amount of replayability beyond its relatively short six to eight-hour story mode. But who plays Minecraft for the...
