I once believed my trail of destiny led to the National Basketball Association. A natural conclusion for a 5’5” kid from the suburbs of Northern Georgia who couldn’t make his high school team. The 1-9 record of my senior season of recreational ball struck me back to reality. Throughout my young adult years, I’ve fulfilled many sports fantasies through a series of games, notably through the NBA 2K franchise. I’ve spent several iterations apart from the franchise as my passion for the sport has faded. However, the ember of love for the game remaining in my soul was sparked to...

If you’re a huge basketball fan then of course you’re going to want to buy NBA 2K20, warts and all. But you should probably ask yourself, “do you need to?”. If you just want to play basketball, NBA 2K19 does the job nearly almost as well – and you can pick that up for peanuts if you don’t already own it. NBA 2K20‘s MyCareer is a huge disappointment, and other modes have had minor improvements at best. All you’re really paying for is roster updates, WNBA and the opportunity to buy more VC. If that sounds like a good deal...

This is the least impressed I've been with an NBA 2K title out of the gate this whole console generation, which says a lot. With both Xbox Scarlett and PS5 arriving next year, I hope the team at Visual Concepts is gearing up big time to bring this series into next-gen. Until then though, NBA 2K20 just feels like more of the same game I've already been dabbling with for the past year.

Splendid recreation of basketball with game-changing, innovative evolution cards – but it can’t escape the bad taste the microtransactions leave.

From a gameplay perspective, there’s no denying that NBA 2K20 reigns supreme as the best basketball game you’ll want to play this year. Sadly, 2K Games seems to be expanding its microtransaction plague throughout the experience to a point that it feels oppressive. Still if you’re able to wade through the muck and deal with the advertisements and pay-to-win modes, you won’t be disappointed by the stellar updates and excellent presentation you’ve come to expect.

The NBA 2K franchise has gotten so large that it services niche fanbases as much as it tries to appeal to the masses. Some players grind out progress and chase the badge meta of MyCareer, others rebuild the NBA as they see fit in MyLeague, and then there’s the never-ending card collecting of MyTeam. All are rightfully NBA 2K fans and deserve to get joy from their favorite basketball title.

NBA season is almost upon us. Ahead of the official start of the 2019-2020 season on October 22nd, 2K has tapped Visual Concepts to develop the latest iteration of the venerable basketball simulation series. Have there been enough improvements to justify a yearly plunk of cash? Or is this just a re-skinned NBA 2K19 with a roster update?

NBA 2K continues its tradition of upping already tremendous gameplay, emulating the real-life sport in ways that didn’t seem possible just years ago. The inclusion of the WNBA may be this year’s biggest step forward, especially because it does an excellent job showcasing the many gameplay improvements from last year. MyCareer also continues to improve in small and noticeable ways, setting a new standard for story modes in sports games. Still, NBA 2K20 would have been better off by focusing on its complex modes like MyLeague and cleaning up MyTeam to be less dependent on microtransactions. In spite of that...

The NBA 2K series has continued to dominate when it comes to buzzer-to-buzzer action, but recent entries haven’t quite lived up to their full potential off the court. Sure, loyal round ball fans have continued to plunk their cash down in record numbers, but not without a fair amount of grumbling from some corners. NBA 2K18 went too far with its money-grasping monetization schemes, and 2K19 continued that trend while also mishandling MyGM mode and some other key features. Both were good games, but not necessarily great ones.

NBA 2K20 will continue to be supported by its giant community and hailed as a true NBA simulation. There's no doubt that the game is fun as the grind and work throughout it gives such a feeling of satisfaction at the end because you battled for that win. Having that broadcast presentation helps with that since after the game there are so many options to do off-the-court management that it keeps the player engaged for some time. The quirks and issues become aggravating over time as you try to get better, but the core feel of the game has felt...

There's a big, impressive game to sink your teeth into with 2K20, even if it tastes a bit like 2k19.

Typically when the NBA season comes around, players have the choice of picking between either NBA 2K or NBA Live for their digital basketball fix. However, this year sees Electronic Arts’ title releasing later in the year after a recent delay, so NBA 2K20 is the only game on the market if you want a new title. Thankfully for fans, the up-and-down series has largely been a slam dunk this year as its consistently great gameplay is aided by a fantastic story mode and less invasive microtransactions.

To call NBA 2K20‘s last weeks before its launch “rocky” is a mammoth-sized understatement. In a world where governments are punishing loot boxes and consumers are outright denouncing shady monetization schemes in games, 2K’s brand new sports title debuted with a trailer blatantly showcasing casino-themed gambling mechanics was a move as tone-deaf as playing The Prodigy’s “Firestarter” on a documentary about the Amazon Rainforest. The main question was: would 2K try to remedy thi...
