A middle of the road performance for New Pokémon Snap. It will certainly find its niche, and anyone who considers themselves a big Pokémon fan will come away from this game grinning about some really beautiful moments. The biggest issue with New Pokémon Snap is that there is no reason to stick around after the first couple of hours.

Though it comes with a crop of upgrades, and its graphics have been brushed to a smooth shine, what it offers, despite its title, is the joy of the old.

It's been 22 years since Pokemon Snap released on Nintendo 64 and there's now a New version for Switch so let's check it out.

Many fans have been waiting for a Pokemon Snap sequel since their childhood, and while it may not exactly be what they imagined, it's a solid experience and highlights what has been sorely been missed in the franchise. New Pokemon Snap is a worthwhile sequel, a relaxing journey through the Pokemon world, and fun to play in the comfort of one's home or on the go.

New Pokemon Snap captures the magic of the Pokemon series with dazzling visuals and so much content in each level. It's just short of being perfect, were it not for a few small quirks.

New Pokémon Snap is a delightful photography game that I’ll be coming back to constantly for just one more course. Seeing Pokémon in their natural habitats captures a unique magic the series has been missing for a while, and seeing how they react to you is a ton of fun. While filling out the Photodex is rewarding, equally rewarding is taking more creative snaps, editing them, and sharing them online.

New Pokemon Snap isn’t the calm, meditative sightseeing tour I was expecting. As one of few who never played the Nintendo 64 original, I’d always imagined Pokemon Snap to be pretty laid-back. You’d sit in your car, take a picture of a Pikachu eating an apple, then you’d call it a day. Little did I know I was actually becoming a member of the Poke-paparazzi, desperately trying to capture the perfect shot while acutely aware of the myriad of photos I’m missing out on taking.

We’ve all got a friend that’s into birdwatching or some other strange form of natural voyeurism. They’ll have a little pocket-sized notebook filled with pictures and info on whatever chosen thing they’ve decided to obsess over and will pause every ten or so meters to take a picture of something you can never see. It's not the most exciting hobby in the world, but after playing the New Pokémon Snap, it's not hard to see the wonder in it.

New Pokemon Snap shines in bringing the Pokemon world to life and having you take pictures of it. It does have some long-game flaws, but in the short term, you’ll be in Nirvana as you see Pokemon left and right and try to get all the best shots of them.

Well, this has been a long time coming. Pokémon Snap for the N64 was a hit that nobody expected, and has been a beloved fan favourite since 1999. Its premise was simple, its execution smooth (well, smooth for the N64). And ever since then, Pokemon fans have been begging Nintendo for a sequel. But the Pokémon franchise has grown exponentially since the N64 days: there are over 700 new Pokémon across 8 regions (9 if you include this new Lental Region).

Ridiculously charming and extremely relaxing, New Pokemon Snap provides the most realized and fleshed out window into the Pokemon world yet, also delivering a robust and entertaining game that makes good on the original title's potential remarkably well in the process.

Whenever I remind myself that the first Pokémon Snap came out a whopping twenty-two years ago, I feel a bit dead on the inside. I was only six when that game came out, the perfect age to enjoy not only that fantastic Nintendo 64 gem (which still holds up pretty well), but also to enjoy the Pokémon craze in its infancy, during the peak of its pop culture relevance. I cannot believe it took them more than two decades to come up with a sequel to one of the most beloved hits of the N64 era. But...

New Pokémon Snap is not perfect, but it is far and away the sequel to the 1999 classic we have all been waiting for. While I wish some pacing issues and nitpicks with what is no longer in the game have influenced my enjoyment, overall, I cannot wait to spend countless more hours perfecting my photography skills and engrossing myself in this absolutely stunning world.

The successor to the 1999 classic is a fun romp through a new Pokémon landscape, but don’t expect a revolutionary approach to photography.

More than two decades removed from Pokémon Snap’s debut on Nintendo 64, this unique gaming experience is finally back. New Pokémon Snap effectively carries on the spirit of the original game, tasking you to get the best possible photographs of Pokémon as you travel through environments on a rail line. And while it delivers all the excitement of nabbing the perfect snapshot, like any photography adventure, it's not without a few undeveloped negatives.

Though the original Pokemon Snap is quite beloved among its cult following of players, it's often been heavily criticized for having little appeal outside of childhood nostalgia. New Pokemon Snap more or less stays inside the confines set by the original, though it does add some neat new features and mechanics. A much larger Pokedex, gyro controls, and gorgeous level design all make New Pokemon Snap a step up from its predecessor, even if it does follow strongly in its footsteps. It may not be the next amazing Pokemon spinoff, but fans that have been waiting for over 20 years...

After a 22-year gap, New Pokémon Snap is a successful modern reinvention of all the best ideas of Pokémon Snap, with more courses, more Pokémon, and more reasons to revisit familiar spots in pursuit of the perfect shot. Some of its supportive systems, like its photo scoring and tutorials, can drag down momentum or even frustrate at times. But at the end of the day, some artificial grade is utterly secondary to the clever environmental storytelling you’ll experience as you level up courses, the fun of discovering surprising photo opps, and the sheer joy of observing a moving ecosystem of...
