During the sixty to seventy hours it takes to make your way through the main story and DLC on offer in Pillars Of Eternity (much more should you choose, quite rightly, to meander), you’ll meet a cast of unforgettable travelling companions, fight your way through labyrinthian dungeons, explore deserted Dwarven fortresses, become Lord of your very own stronghold and undertake quests as varied as they are beautifully-written and acted. Obsidian has created a heartfelt tribute to the classic 'Infinity Engine' RPGs of old; one that takes the best of those games, delicately updates them and – in the process – becomes something of a classic itself. For RPG fans, this is a must-buy.

Pillars of Eternity's port to the Switch is a great port indeed. It brings the modern classic to the handheld scene for on the go awesomeness. The only lacking feature of this entire release is the controls. Had they included touch capabilities, it would have set it far apart from the other console releases. As it stands now, the mediocre controls truly hinder the game itself. Yet at the same time, the core gameplay is still there, and it's still awesome. While the controls are flawed, it's s...

Pillars of Eternity II is an excellent game in a genre that has seen a resurgence of quality titles as of late. Continuing on from Pillars of Eternity, Obsidian Entertainment was able to create a brilliant sequel that neither ignores its history, nor forces the gamer to have experienced it. The gameplay never gets stale and the setting of an island world is something I’ve not experienced before. There’s easily 40 – 50 hours worth of story in this game, and you can triple that if you exp...

Tennis in the Face, what is there to really say about it? While it may look extraordinarily basic, this article takes a look further into the game and shows what you can expect from the game.

This is the type of game that needs two scores. One for the diehards of the genre and one for the newbies. The development team catered to their core group, and I feel they made the game that they wanted to play. But ultimately I also feel I have to hold them responsible for making a game that feels inaccessible in so many ways. Once you get over the learning cliff, there is a better game out there than this score represents. Pillars of Eternity is like a speakeasy. If you know the dirty, dark alley you need to go down and have the password for the doorman, there is a wonderful, vibrant, and robust world on the other side filled with dancing girls, jazz music, booze, and cigarettes.

My one disappointment with the choices, however, felt hard to shake. At one point, when you're faced with a faction to choose, the moment falls flat on its face. No matter what choice you make, the moment ends the same. This shattered the illusion of choice, and wasted the pride and responsibility I had felt over the last ten or so hours. The scene was still extremely well written, but having the idea that somehow my choices mattered ripped from my control just sits heavy on my heart.

Pillars of Eternity evokes the halcyon days of isometric RPGs.

Obsidian's Pillars of Eternity is a love letter to those gamers who remember RPGs of old - when parties were large, adventures were world-sprawling, and you read a book or two worth of words before the world was saved.

It may seem like I am being too harsh on Pillars of Eternity, but in truth the game is one of the better Kickstarter titles to be released, and gives a lot of independent and even some AAA titles a run for their money.

Making a game broadly accessible and appealing often results in something easy and simplistic. Pillars of Eternity is proof that role-playing games can be engaging and challenging no matter the player, and embrace complexity in storytelling and gameplay without sacrificing a wider audience. Obsidian’s crowd-funded return to the RPGs of yesteryear is a triumph; its rich cast of characters, myriad upgrade options, and story-filled quests are the equal of any modern genre entry, and a suitable successor to the games that engendered it.

Pillars of Eternity embodies nearly everything that’s great about old-school RPG experiences. and the quality of its writing and the attention given to every little detail of its world is such that it sometimes feels like Neil Gaiman is playing dungeon master here. Most importantly, Pillars of Eternity paves the way for what should become a landmark RPG series in its own right. It honors the classics, brings great ideas of its own, and in the process it emerges as a classic itself. Games like this are always about the journey, and it's sure as hell a journey worth taking.

Obsidian has crafted a game full of challenge, intrigue, betrayal, and heart. The Eastern Reach is bleak and hopeful at the same time, and the main plot is packed with twists and surprises with staggering ramifications for a world players will feel they have become part of. Its combat is tense and relentless despite the capability to pause at any point, the mechanics offering complex strategic challenges with difficulty settings to accommodate most levels of skill. Pillars of Eternity proudly carries on the legacy of the classic computer RPG, and those who remember them with fondness should find in it a welcome addition to the genre.

All you really need to know though, is this; Pillars of Eternity is a triumph. If you’re a backer and a fan of those classic Infinity Engine games, you’re in for a real treat, a smart and complex adventure that will keep you entertained and absorbed for possibly the rest of your life, and certainly until the already announced expansion pack comes out. Even those who never got on with those classic games should give it a go, because there’s a tonne of smart design choices in here that sm...

In short, Obsidian Entertainment has created a specific title for a specific audience, but has done so with great success. Pillars of Eternity is a must-have for fans of the Infinity Engine RPGs, or 1990s computer role-playing games in general. Those unfamiliar with the genre may find the title a little less involving, but Pillars of Eternity is undoubtedly a triumph.
