Of all of EA’s main franchises, Plants vs Zombies was the one I questioned the most regarding why it hadn’t still been ported for the Nintendo Switch. A game like Plants vs Zombies: Battle for Neighborville, basically a lighthearted and cartoonish take on the publisher’s own Battlefield, seemed like a perfect fit for the system. Not only due to its multiplayer capabilities, but also due to its newcomer-friendly nature and colorful visuals. It took some time for EA and PopCap to finally ...

Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville is a game I didn’t know too much about before heading into it. I was familiar with its predecessors, Garden Warfare and Garden Warfare 2, but have never played either of them. As a fan of third-person shooters like Saints Row and Grand Theft Auto, and multiplayer games like Overwatch, I was interested in Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville so when the opportunity to review the game arose, and I must say, I’m pleasantly surprised with how much I’ve enjoyed my time with the game.

Part of this is thanks to Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville's impressive single-player modes. The game arrives on Switch fully formed after a year of DLC updates, so it features multiple full adventures that can be enjoyed solo or with friends via co-op. While these modes felt like a sideshow on other versions of the game, they take center stage on a platform that's meant to be portable. There are lots of missions to go through for both Plant and Zombie players, and they're bite-sized enough to fit into a busy on-the-go schedule or a morning commute. PopCap's signature...

After the Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare series gave players two games full of exciting heroes and intense battles across fun multiplayer modes, Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville rebrands the series. However, despite the new name, make no mistake: This new entry carries forward the enjoyable multiplayer suite from those enjoyable Garden Warfare games while experimenting with PvE modes to mixed results.

Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville is a competent team-based shooter, but looking microtransactions and the lack of anything truly new prevent it from being anything more than junk food.

Good core gameplay and distinct classes don’t makePlants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborvillestand out in the competitive landscape of games it emulates. The co-op modes can be a blast to play with friends or solo, but the game spreads itself too thin and never feels like it has tuned its mechanics specifically for any of the included PvP modes. The result is a fun experience with tons of content to grind through butBattle for Neighborvillenever gives players meaningful incentives to stick around long enough to see most of it.

Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville is an amazing next chapter in the series. Its story campaign alone is enough to warrant a buy. It’s not just the graphics, the characters, or the amazing multiplayer that makes it a must buy, it’s the charm that the developers have dialed into this game. Every minute playing feels like you’re on track to discover something ridiculously funny and over the top. Though there are a few key tweaks needed to make the battles spot on, it’s the culmination of other things that make this a great game.

Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville just launched officially on October 18, but it had five weeks before that for Founding Neighbors to get some early access time with the game as PopCap added features and tuned characters and modes. As a huge fan of the previous third-person shooter outings pitting flora against the undead, I was eager to jump in after what’s felt like far too long a wait since Garden Warfare 2. While the first few weeks had some ups and downs, there’s a reason that was an early launch period ahead of official release, and things have...

Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville’s PvE campaigns aren't worth your time, but the PvP multiplayer is addictive, chaotic fun. Once a match finishes, it’s always tempting to hang around for one more, grabbing a new character this time with a completely different playstyle. The formula hasn't changed much since Garden Warfare 2, but it's still amusing, still frantic, and the newly expanded roster gives fans of the franchise plenty of reasons to return.

Plants vs. Zombies has come a long way from its tower defense roots. The Garden Warfare series transformed the game from tower defense into a full-blown 3D hero shooter.

Plants vs Zombies: Battle for Neighborville takes the foundation of the Garden Warfare series and expands upon it. No longer is the game just about competitive multiplayer, there’s now a wide variety of co-op activities for friends to play through. Whether you’re a fan of Garden Warfare, or new to the Plants vs Zombies series, there’s something for everyone in Battle for Neighborville.

Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville doesn’t go out of its way to surpass expectations, but it’s a silly, strange, joyful game – one I’m glad was greenlit. If PopCap can continue what it started, this stands a fighting chance of becoming my favorite PvZ spin-off. I hope it gets that opportunity.

You know what, had EA not, after launch and quite by surprise, included shameless money-grabbing aspects to Plants Vs Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 it would have arguably been one of my games of the year. It was a fun, engaging and downright enjoyable game that was perfect to jump in and just have some fun. Then EA added microtransactions after reviews had come out. Why? They know it has an impact on the score. What's going to happen to Plants vs Zombies: Battle for Neighborville? Something similar, but at least we know about it.

If you enjoyed the previous Garden Warfare games, this is a must. But even if you didn’t get into them at the time, Neighborville might be the stepping stone you need to jump in and join the fun. Now that leaves the question of which side to pick. The Plants are technically “good guys”…but who can deny a disco zombie?

While it might not be every shooter fan's bag, Battle for Neighborville has certainly got the ability to entertain just about anyone... young or old, experienced shooter player or first-timer.

Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare is an underrated series. So underrated, in fact, that publisher EA and developer PopCap Games has decided to drop that subtitle altogether. Now we’re introduced to Plants vs Zombies: Battle for Neighborville, a new third-person PvE and PvP shooter, which is Garden Warfare 3 in all but name. But while the greenery may still be locked in an eternal war with the undead, Battle for Neighborville is a more competitive offering than its predecessors. Unfortunately, this replaces a lot of what made the previous two games so entertaining.
