Season: A Letter to the Future, an indie title from Scavengers Studio, is a beautifully told journey of internal and external discovery. Look, I totally get it. I really do. We’ve been there, right? We’ve all Gone Home at some point. We are all aware of What Remains of Edith Finch. Artistic indies about self-discovery are nothing new anymore, but if we didn’t enjoy those more calming titles, those tiny oases of calm, then we wouldn’t be in this review. Right?

Season: A Letter to the Future is a beautiful and melancholic slice-of-life adventure about cherishing and preserving the fleeting moments of life. However, for a game about understanding and embracing time, it doesn't lend itself enough time to blossom fully, making its rather dramatic conclusion less impactful than it deserves to be. Still, what's there is remarkable, making Season one of the freshest and most captivating video game experiences of this generation.

The grass feels wet and cool on your back. Dappled sunlight dances across your closed eyelids as a light breeze sighs gently. You breathe, deeply, inhaling the rich scent of earth and tasting the hint of blossom on the back of your tongue. Exhaling, you make a point of recording this precious moment. You carve these sensations into the bedrock of your memory before you stand up, climb onto your bicycle, and set off.

If you’re down with that vibe, you’ll find this a very relaxing experience with some entertaining worldbuilding and a few mysteries for suspense. However, being pretty much a one-off experience more like a movie may rub a lot of gamers the wrong way.

There’s a lot to like in the unhurried exploration of Season: A Letter to the Future, but in the end, I respect it more than I enjoy it. Its focus on small human stories and creative expression is admirable, even as they’re drowned out by a lukewarm plot, and the world’s beauty can’t be overstated. But rather than the meditative, meandering journey its opening suggests, Season gets locked into a single story that centers on the cataclysmic fate approaching its world more than the wonder that already fills it.

There’s something special about the power that Season: A Letter to the Future gives to the player; the freedom you have to explore, to document, to see and do exactly as you wish. Free of threat and any real time pressure, you’ll simply become absorbed, seeing everything for the first time just as your protagonist is. For the action-oriented amongst you, that might sound a little dull. But we can’t overstate just how wonderful it feels to play something like this, a game that really doesn’t mind what you do or how you do it, as long as you’re doing…...

Season: A Letter to the Future is a poetic, melancholy rite of passage experience like no other. Its take on facing the end of the world is about preserving what was rather than trying to survive what will be, and is all the better for it.

Other than those two things, however, there is not much negative to say about Season: A Letter to the Future. It probably won’t appeal to those who have a hunkering for a more action-oriented experience. But for a relaxing evening on the couch, without much thinking required, the adventure title definitely delivers. It’s simply a beautiful game, both in terms of graphics and the story that it tells, and will leave players with a pleasant sense of wonder, curiosity, and vague nostalgia.

Season: A Letter to the future feels like the perfect antidote for someone that’s grown a bit tired of epic, action-heavy adventure games. Scavengers Studio delivers an adventure game that’s warm and peaceful, but still fulfilling and thought-provoking. Although the movement controls can feel a bit clunky, Season: A Letter to the future is an easy recommendation.
