SimCity Reviews

Professional reviews from gaming critics

There is still much to be talked about in the latest entry in the SimCity franchise, especially for someone who has been a hardcore fan since the original. Even with all the server issues, I was still very contented with the level this series has reached. I’m certain that Maxis and EA know what they are doing to strengthen the future of this magnificent series, although its online feature needs improvement to make it all work. SimCity has always been fun and it continues to stay that way. If you have been craving for a robust city-building simulation, there can’t be any better treat than this.

In some ways I'd equate SimCity to an early version of Minecraft: a wonderfully creative toy attached to a barely functional game. The most important parts of something really cool are here already, and that's enough for me to recommend it to people with a tolerance for buggy but beautiful things. If you go in, do so with the understanding that you will almost certainly hit frustrating bugs like the ones I've mentioned, but the rewards can certainly be worth it. Of course, it should go without saying that if you're opposed to always-online games in general, you should sit this one out.

In short, SimCity is a title with great potential that has been sullied by limited features and one of the worst video-game launches in recent memory. The questionable exclusion of an offline mode led to an explosion of problems, including fundamental game-changers like smaller city sizes and players being unable to actually play their own game. Rampant missed opportunities and sloppy design will be detected by newcomers and veteran city mayors alike. It's still relatively fun to play, but it's far from the SimCity we all know and love, and it deserves much better.

In the end, I really do hope SimCity gets better, because I’m keen, eager and ready to play and experience more - just not until some of these problems are addressed. I still had a lot of fun, for a lot of hours - I just wish it didn’t all fall apart later on.
