For fans of the genre, Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town is a great example of a life/farming sim at its finest. There’s a mixture of everything here: farming, town building, exploration, relationship building, fishing, cooking, crafting – and it’s all blended together so well. If you’ve got the time to sink into it and you’re looking for something seriously relaxing, you really can’t go wrong.

Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town is a stunning showcase of the classic Harvest Moon series, now available on PC. With its release on the platform, players can also purchase DLC for the game, with new areas to explore and customization options. The result may be cute, but it's not without its problems.

If you are predominantly a PC gamer, you might not be familiar with the Story of Seasons franchise, but you’ve probably heard of the series’ original name – Harvest Moon. The highly influential classic inspired other bestsellers such as Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley, among many other farming-based games. The franchise had to change its name due to copyright reasons with the publisher they left behind, but rest assured, the original devs are creating Story of Seasons.

The PC release of Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town has benefited greatly from all the quality of life changes which have been patched into the Switch release, making it an enjoyable farming experience right from the start. It looks shockingly similar in quality to the Switch version, a credit to the dev team, and the optional Expansion Pass adds a good deal of content, some of it cosmetic while other features expand the world, the plot, and the personalities which inhabit Olive Town.

Assuming that you're not playing this kind of game for the relationship aspects, Pioneers of Olive Town is a good farming RPG. It continues many of the long-established trends of the Harvest Moon series, whilst adding in some welcome quality of life improvements. Although perhaps not quite on Stardew Valley's level, this is still a game that is worth playing and one that genre fans will enjoy. As a bonus, thanks to it now being on PC you don't have to deal with the Switch version's various pe...

I get that my complaints probably sound like I’m nitpicking the game, and maybe I am asking too much of a budget title, but really, these issues illustrate that despite the fact Pioneers of Olive Town marks the silver anniversary of the franchise, the developer didn’t really go out of its way to make this entry something special. This is a safe and standard Story of Seasons game. It doesn’t rock the boat, it doesn’t try anything groundbreaking like when Marvelous released Rune Factory to mark the franchise’s tenth anniversary; it’s just more of what we’ve seen before with a...

Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town is a promising start of a new chapter in the long-running farm/life simulator’s history. All the pieces are in place for an unforgettable experience, with its peaceful and serene location, endlessly customizable landscape, and an unprecedented abundance of crafts and projects to pursue. While at times unwieldy, there’s something for everyone here, especially those who are interested in the organization and production management aspect of running a farm.

The colorful visuals and upbeat soundtrack are strong points of the game, though I think some voice acting might have given the characters a bit more personality. There are plenty of catchy songs throughout the game to keep your head bopping as you harvest crops, which is an important feature in a game that has you spend so much of your time doing a few simple things.

Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town has you managing the farm that supports the growing town nearby. If that sounds like an actual job, that’s because sometimes it’s not that far off.

Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town does have that compelling farming gameplay loop that we've seen time and time again in different series, but it lacks depth -- much like the rest of the game -- to keep farming sim veterans coming back. At a time where the likes of Stardew Valley and Rune Factory continue to push the genre forward and provide greater longevity, it's difficult to recommend this rough-around-the-edges excursion to Olive Town.

In fact, with rudimentary characters and extremely basic tasks, it almost feels like the Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town gameplay was made for those who haven't played any farming sims in the past. But for folks familiar with the genre, they'll find that there's not much to find here and little reason to justify spending $49.99 on an unoriginal, redundant farming sim aside from being a relaxing and easy-going experience.

It is worth noting that it sounds like XSeed will be patching the aforementioned issues, but I’m not sure how much I would get out of it after investing so much time into the current build. It feels like a big ask to start over just to enjoy what should have been done correctly the first time.

Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town is the first proper current-gen game released for the series, as last year’s Friends of Mineral Town was a remake of a Game Boy Advance game, and the Doraemon spin-off is… well… a Doraemon spin-off. This is the first true contender made by Marvelous to compete against other slice of life juggernauts like Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Stardew Valley. Well, there’s still Harvest Moon, but let’s face it, that game is just carrying the name o...

Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town is another classic farming sim entry by the original Japanese Harvest Moon developers. After playing Friends of Mineral Town quite recently, I can say that this is definitely a more modern take on the genre with some of the accoutrements that we have become used to post the release of Stardew Valley. It takes a more personalised approach to the way your farm is laid out and has a lot more to do than some of the older Harvest Moon games, so it’s great...

Pioneers of Olive Town recognizes it does not need to reinvent the plow to present a full, relaxing, pleasant farming game. Aside from its sprawling size, there is not much novel about collecting materials, upgrading tools, clearing land, raising animals and crops, and befriending the townspeople – and there doesn't need to be. It is enough to simply have a wealth of interesting things to plan out and do, colored by ridiculously cute animals and interesting characters and fleshed out with piles of new things to unlock over 30 hours and beyond. While the struggling framerate and tedious crafting can...
