Super Mario RPG is considered one of the best JRPGs of all time. Any genre fan owes it to themselves to play it at least once, and there's no easier way than th
Super Mario RPG is a strong remake of an already stellar game. It successfully focuses on improving the original in all the right places: a faster and snappier battle system, strong quality-of-life improvements and more difficult optional content. These improvements combine with the game’s already quirky charm to offer an experience that easily eclipses the original. While it’s overly simplistic compared to other RPGs, that’s ostensibly the point. Super Mario RPG is an oddball piece of Nintendo’s history like no other, and that alone makes it worth experiencing.
With completely overhauled visuals, a reworking of the original game’s iconic Yoko Shimomura soundtrack, and some welcome quality-of-life updates, now is the perfect time to experience this beloved slice of Nintendo history with a fresh perspective.
While the general simplicity might hold back some, Super Mario RPG still excels at what it intends to do: wax nostalgia and provide a gentle RPG experience. It’s a gorgeous adventure with tons of personality and a combat system that is often imitated but never fully duplicated. Even with Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi succeeding this game, they truly don’t make them like this wacky, bizarre game anymore. The playful vibe fits so well with the slightly off-brand Mario world that makes this game, with the grimy Wario-like Booster, goofy Axem Rangers, and evil wedding cake, unforgettable. Your…
Full disclosure right out of the gate: Super Mario RPG is a game near and dear to my heart. It's a game I go back to once a year, and I know this weird and wonderful take on the Mario universe like the back of my hand. I hadn't gotten to 2023's run yet when Nintendo dropped the news of a remake on my lap back in June, so I waited with excitement and a bit of concern for this new version to drop.
The distinct visual style of the original game seemed to be a thing of necessity, but this new updated take on that aesthetic is quite pleasing. The goofy characters haven’t lost any of their peculiar appeal, but the uncanny nature of the SNES models is mostly gone. The environments are colorful, the character designs are a delight, and the visual effects in battles are more stylish than ever before. I’m impressed with this makeover, as like the rest of the remake, it improves without removing anything of note.
A worthwhile, modern remake for fans of the original and first-time players.
Super Mario RPG is a classic for a reason, and its remake stands just as tall as the original. The visuals and sound are both top notch, and while some new features make the already easy battles even easier, this is still an excellent game that will have you grinning from ear to ear the whole way through.
Originally released on Super NES in 1996, Super Mario RPG lets players join Mario, Bowser, Princess Peach, and original characters Mallow and Geno, in an RPG filled with twists, turns and treasure.
Super Mario RPG was one of the best titles of its era, and based on the Switch remake, is just as good today. The remade graphics maintain all the charm of the original while transforming a decades-old game into one of the better-looking titles on Switch. The quality-of-life improvements such as splash damage from timed hits are fun additions, though some may criticize that this makes a game with a rather low challenge level even easier. Aside from those additions talked about earlier, this is the same game players loved back in 1996 with a fresh coat of paint. Super Mario RPG succeeds at invoking feelings of nostalgia for the 16-bit era while looking good enough to pass for a modern game. It's short and simple compared to many RPGs, but while the time with it may brief, there are no wasted hours.
We could argue back-and forth about whether Nintendo should have simply released the original Super Mario RPG on the SNES app that online subscribers already have access to. The visual update is delightful, but outside of that Nintendo has changed so little that you could play the two games side-by-side and barely notice the difference in the experience. And yet, it’s also one of the all-time great moments from the SNES era, and so whimsical and playful that, ultimately, Super Mario RPG is a worthwhile purchase for no other reason than it’s an excuse to play it again.
A remake of Super Mario RPG wasn't something almost anybody had on their bingo cards for this year. Over the past decade or so, Nintendo has seemed dead set on distancing Mario from his rich RPG past, with the Paper Mario games being significantly simplified and the Mario & Luigi series being allowed to slowly fizzle out. And yet, here we are in 2023 with a lavish remake of Super Mario RPG on the near horizon. The only thing predictable about Nintendo is their unpredictability.
Set out on a classic Mario adventure. Enter—or revisit—a world of whimsy with Mario on a quest to repair Star Road and defeat the troublemaking Smithy Gang. Team up with a party of unlikely allies, like the monstrous Bowser and a mysterious doll named Geno, in a story-rich RPG packed with laughs and quirky characters.
Easy to get into, hard to master, and an absolute blast all around.
Super Mario RPG may not be challenging but enjoyable turn based combat and wonderfully charming and witty writing make this nostalgic RPG a shining example of how to remake a beloved classic.
Nearly 30 years old, Super Mario RPG is a classic that serves as Nintendo’s first true RPG. Does this remake do it justice or was it unnecessary? Read our review to find out!
It's been a long time but Super Mario RPG is back and prettier than ever so let's explore what makes this game so special.
Mario and his pals are back in more glorious form than ever in this faithful, vibrant remake of Super Mario RPG. For myself and many others growing up in the proclaimed “golden age of gaming” of the mid-90s, Super Mario [...]
A wish of many came true! The legend of the seven stars is back for the Switch in Super Mario RPG Remake. The magic of this turn-based classic is here to captivate more fans with reworked visuals.
The year 2023 isn't over yet, and despite receiving a hearty helping of Mario with his latest majestic 2D outing Super Mario Wonder he returns again in 3D
I really liked Super Mario RPG! It's a fun time through and through. Seeing all the zany characters in a gorgeous art style, accompanied by a beautifully rearranged soundtrack really took me back. The combat is engaging and smooth, especially with the updates provided by ArtePiazza. It takes everything that was beloved about the original and keeps it intact while adding minor tweaks to sandpaper down some rough edges. Some may complain that some of the mechanical additions make combat too eas...
A few quality-of-life changes make it more palatable to modern audiences, but this is still the same fantastic RPG from all those years ago.
It is pure joy, in a genre I hold dear, that should be experienced regardless of your history with it.
Super Mario RPG is unapologetically fun. While a simple combat system and lack of challenge may not appeal to hardcore RPG fans, brilliant writing, iconic characters, and a world bursting with charm make it a delight to experience all the way through, and a perfect example of a remake done right.
Super Mario RPG does a great job of mixing charming characters and fun, intuitive gameplay into an easy-to-enjoy package. Despite a few stumbles along the way, this classic journey largely lives up to its reputation, giving fans, new and old, something wonderful to experience.
Back in 1996, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars was released on SNES to audiences in Japan and the US. A strange game, it came into existence out of Shigeru Miyamoto’s dream to make an RPG using everybody’s favourite plumber, along with RPG master developer Square’s hopes to develop an RPG that could be more successful outside of Japan than their previous games. With their powers combined, a charming, turn-based take on Mario was born – but, not released down here in Australi...
Super Mario RPG is a gorgeously realised remake that brings the classic turn-based adventure to modern audiences but stops just short of recapturing the magical uniqueness of the original.
This brand new remake of the 1996 classic recaptures a lot of what made the original game great while infusing it with modern updates that will be great for new players but may turn off fans of the original.
There is a lot to love in the Super Mario RPG remake. An adorable art style, deceptively deep combat, an excellent updated soundtrack, and genuinely funny skits and writing all make this game as much of a joy to play as the SNES original. If you can look past the simplicity of the game overall, and the occasionally frustrating experience that is the jumping puzzles, this is a stellar addition to the Switch’s already stacked library.
Though it can be a little easy, the Super Mario RPG remake scratches all the right itches – even a few decades on.
The game that kicked off Mario's RPG adventures retains its charm in this cheerful remake.
This year’s biggest Mario game has come and gone already, which makes you wonder where else can Nintendo possibly go as its ridiculously successful hybrid games console must be entering its twilight phase. With the beloved plumber’s extensive history, it never hurts to mine the vault and refurbish a classic for a new generation. In this case, it’s the turn of Super Mario RPG.
At the end of the day, I'm glad I got to play this refined version of Super Mario RPG. It's a game that garnered quite a bit of critical and fan acclaim back when it first released in 1996, and the 2023 remake is a loving recreation that will appeal to both longtime fans and newcomers alike. While I wish it could've been just a little bit more streamlined, it's hard to complain too much about a game that just makes you smile and feel good for playing it.
A real Super Mario game on smartphone might have seemed impossible at one time, but this has all the polish and charm you’d expect of a top flight Nintendo game.
Super Mario Run is an elegantly designed platformer with strong hooks that kept me coming back. Once I wrapped up the main campaign, the addictive, replayable stages urged me to perfect my coin runs. Kingdom Builder and Toad Rally provided further motivation to keep dashing for the finish line, so I could invest the spoils in my own Mushroom Kingdom. While this isn’t the best-looking Super Mario game by a longshot, it successfully distills the core fun and charm of the Mario franchise into a smart, one-handed experience.
Super Mario RPG is a fun if not short RPG adventure with Mario and friends at the helm. It mixes together a colorful and interesting world with fun interactive RPG elements. Whether you're replaying this game from the SNES or experiencing it for the first time you should have fun.
Super Mario RPG is a faithful remake of the 1996 classic, which adds several new gameplay features and some welcome quality-of-life updates. While the revisioned graphics, sound, and music are amazing, the storytelling is still very basic with a challenge that is somehow easier than the Super Nintendo original. However, if you can stomach the price, which is a bit high considering the overall package, there’s still a lot of fun to be had here.
“Super Mario RPG isn't necessarily an improvement over the 1996 version, but it's at least a more approachable experience for kids.”
Super Mario Run is a good mobile game featuring Mario, but not a mobile version of a good Mario game.
