Super Time Force blew me away. This is a must-own for Xbox One owners, so don’t waste any…TIME…buying it.

All told, Super Time Force is a satisfying run-and-gun game made even better with a fun (and funny!) take on time travel. It’s as enjoyable to play as it is to look at. You’ll likely be able to burn through the game in a few hours if you’re not going for full completion, but it has such a winning personality that you’ll find yourself coming back for more.

Super Time Force is a side-scrolling shooter game where the player can rewind levels after he quits or dies, and retry or restart.

Super Time Force isn’t the game I thought it was. A quick glance at its insane onscreen action calls to mind classic bullet-hell shooters like Contra or Metal Slug, but spend more than five minutes playing it and a different picture emerges. While dodging bullets and taking out enemies is certainly part of the fun, the real appeal is all about playing with time, replays, character positioning, and an odd twist on speed running. Capy’s latest game forces players to think in new ways, and the thrill comes through the inventive routes to success.

You will notice the game has blocky graphics on a somewhat washed out color palette. You’ll see details on faces like mustaches or eye patches, but they won’t win any detail contest that is for sure. The level designs are very simplistic too, but yet you can get confused with their layouts. I sometimes found that the lack of detail in the blockiness hinders your ability to navigate around them. It happens often enough to frustrate, but never to the point of not wanting to play.  I  also found the game having a few hiccups in the area of framerate, but that may be just an added nostalgic flavor since it is never an issue. If every retro game looked like this one I would dearly love to play my old games all over again, as it is a 1080p full screen trip back in time. While it may not have the beautiful polygon counts of today’s games, Super Time Force is a visual feast into what games looked like in past years, with a refreshed reimagining.

Time is on your side.

At $14.99, Super Time Force is a great buy, and highly replayable as more characters are unlocked. There are badges to be earned for each stage (you can pick exactly what stages/segments of missions to replay) for picking up items and the sort. It's a unique, polished and challenging adventure that's absolutely worth your time. And the best part is, completing a stage and re-watching it in real-time. It looks like co-op multiplayer on crack, but it's all you.

I enjoyed playing Super Time Force. It was refreshing to experience something truly different, even in the well-worn territory of the old-school. I was especially impressed by its dedication to its strange and novel mechanic, one that makes it so much more than yet another retro-inspired side-scroller. Still, Super Time Force's strength is also its weakness, and the chaos inherent in its time traveling mechanics caused its share of unavoidable frustration. Throughout the three hour campaign, I was never able to develop a rhythm without finding something to be annoyed at, even after playing parts of it a second time. I love what it's trying to do -- and I'd recommend playing it -- but I also can't help but wonder if it's everything it could have been. In fact, I'm certain that it isn't.

It can be frustrating, but Super Time Force is a brilliant concept, executed well.

Super Time Force is a mighty ambitious indie undertaking. While Capybara Games appears to have successfully accomplished what they set out to do, the question is whether or not you’ll enjoy taking part. Those that cling to the side-scrolling shooter genre for non-stop twitch-based action might be put off by the frequent halts in the gameplay. Those that can get behind the time-bending mechanic and fully comprehend its nature will find a tightly-tuned game of strategy worth their attention. We aren't sure all of the design decisions work, but if you're into the concept, Commander Repeatski and crew are still assuredly worth hanging out with for a weekend or two.

Time-outs can be used whenever a player dies or voluntarily halts the progress of time, sifting backward through the timeline to find the perfect place to rejoin the fray as a ghost, ready to compliment the original steps you made – it’s a regular ‘army of you’. This mechanic can be used to gain a tactical advantage over a boss through sheer weight of numbers, or it can be used in a tactical effort to reach collectibles without wasting valuable time having your ‘original‘ veer from the path.

Super Time Force is probably the dumbest smart shooter I've ever played. The face it wears is the goofy nostalgist that can't be serious for even a moment, sure. But Capy's implentation of time travel and control is inspired enough to shine new light on even its most tired-but-excellently-executed inspirations.

Time travel is a tricky business. Even the slightest change to the past could have catastrophic repercussions on the present and future, altering the space-time continuum irreparably, causing the world to explode or something. Super Time Force has no such preoccupations, transporting the motley squad to a number of locations in the distant past and far flung future, with little thought for the consequences of their haphazard actions. As a result, Super Time Force is one of the most freewheeli...
