Sometimes, you want to play a game that takes you on a grand adventure. Other times, you want to play a game where you can just turn your brain off and explore. Then there are times when you want feel a sense of catharsis as you enjoy some casual minigames or tasks. Tchia, from indie developer Awaceb, satisfies all three of these moods.

Tchia is an adventure game on a fictional island group inspired by the authentic New Caledonian islands. Nature and exploration are at its core, sending you on an emotional and gorgeous sea-faring adventure to bring the fight to the powers that be. That magic and spirit mostly remain throughout the game, providing a fun open-world sandbox to get lost in. Thankfully, that heart manages to stay away from the rough edges that can be visible from time to time, making this a charming title worth ...

A glorious spell of island hopping, with some surprisingly nasty moments.

Tchia is clearly a labour of love as Awaceb try to bring their culture to the rest of the world and show off what it has to offer. I absolutely love that tone and feel, but the way Tchia is packaged and paced means that it is ultimately feels like less than the sum of its parts.

Tchia comes out absolutely recommended for anyone who is looking for a fascinating adventure with a couple of original twists, with the bonus of some truly striking tropical vistas. This is a game brimming with soul – actually, make that souls.

This game is one of my favorite games I've ever played for a hundred different reasons. I recommend it for anyone who likes open-world games of any kind, whether you're an experienced, hardcore gamer or a more casual player. Its vast open world and spot-on physics-based gameplay are immediately immersive and utterly addictive. It reminds me of an approachable, family-friendly version of huge games like Skyrim and Assassin's Creed.

Tchia might very well be the most ambitious indie game we see in 2023. This open-air and open-sea adventure takes some of the best gameplay elements from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey and combines them into an adventure that’s filled with heart, humor, and compassion across a breathtaking archipelago. If you enjoy games with exceptionally designed worlds that are meant to be explored with a fine-tooth comb, I can’t see any reason why you wouldn’t love what’s on offer in Tchia.

While I enjoyed exploring the New Caledonia-inspired land, there were large portions of the world that felt like empty space. While fast travel makes it easy to get to recently-visited locations, you’ll have to make the manual journey to new places. This felt like a bit of a chore when trying to get to areas far away. It’s a common drawback of open-world games that Tchia isn’t able to skirt.

Tchia was a grand adventure that I couldn’t put down. Exploring these islands renewed my love of deep and well-realized open-world exploration games, all thanks to Soul-Jumping. Exploring the numerous land, sky, and sea creatures made what could be a long hike a joyous adventure.

Tchia is a gorgeous, endearing open-world adventure filled with the heart and soul of New Caledonian culture. It's a world you'll love being in despite the overall experience being stymied from reaching its true potential by tedious combat.

Lovely and captivating even if it's a bit lacking in substance overall. But you can fly around a gorgeous open word as a bird and freely play a ukulele, so this one's a win in my book.

Developer Awaceb created Tchia as a love letter to its native home of New Caledonia. Though the game itself is set on a fantastical archipelago, it draws deeply from its real-life counterpart in terms of environment and story. It feels really genuine as a snapshot of the culture; its story is heavily rooted in the territory's folklore, and some of the cast and crew are also New Caledonian natives. From members of the dev team, to the voice actors and the soundtrack composers, this game is as authentically New Caledonian as it's possible to be.

Awaceb delivers an inviting open-world that encourages exploration, creativity, and experimentation. The Soul-Jumping mechanic shines above all, providing a unique way to traverse the landscapes and make the most of the tropical playground. Tchia is a welcome getaway with so much to discover.

“Tchia pays tribute to New Caledonia with a gorgeous open-world game that takes the right notes from Breath of the Wild.”

Ultimately, Tchia has left us slightly cold – and that in itself is disappointing, because we had high hopes for this title. If you’re expecting a Breath of the Wild-style adventure, as trailers and previews (even ours) may have led you to believe, you probably should keep your expectations in check. There is beautiful island fun to be had here, and Tchia’s abilities are wonderful – but by the time you’ve fought your way through its surprisingly drab and disappointing campaign, you’ll unlikely see much reason to return.

Tchia has some interesting things going for it with its beautiful rendition of New Caledonia and fun traversal mechanics, but poor mission design and cookie-cutter side activities mar down those strengths by a significant margin.

Tchia is a terrific ode to New Caledonia that's sadly hampered by a bloated and standard open-world design that tries to do too much. Still, even if the gameplay isn't wholly original, there's fun to be had here, with truly impressive sights and sounds that can make the archipelago a delight to explore at times. Just try to maintain some focus as you navigate the numerous distractions and you'll experience quite the impressive trip.

Though it has its flaws, Tchia is one of the best open world games I've played in a long time. The variety of things to do in its gorgeous world will keep most any player occupied for the duration of their playthrough, and will almost certainly leave them glad they gave the title a chance.
