The Blackout Club is ambitious, but it doesn't have enough variety to make me care for that ambition. Thankfully, there are ways that players can make the game better on their own, filling in what the game lacks, but the game needs to back it up a little more.

We’ve seen a lot of games clearly influenced by Stephen King being released lately, especially those revolving around groups of kids tackling the supernatural. The Stranger Things game is an obvious example, as well as RAD, even though the Stephen King influences in it are a lot more subtle and hidden behind layers of neon, synthesizers, and unfunny jokes. The Blackout Club is the latest game in this trend, a team-based stealth horror title clearly influenced by works like IT and even a bit...

And maybe that polish will still come. Maybe the glitches will get fixed down the line, maybe the game will get that fresh burst of variety in its missions and enemy types that it needs, maybe it'll get a fresh set of environments. But at this time, The Blackout Club isn't a club worth joining. For now, close your eyes and try to imagine a better game.

As previously mentioned, this is a multiplayer game, where your online friends help out, or you can utilise random strangers to mix things up a little. The good thing here is that the vast majority of online players are heavily invested in the game. They’re not about to lark around or attempt a few betrayals and team killings present in the more heavily populated environments of Rainbow Six: Siege or Battlefield V. This is a game apparently free of trolls.

Conversely, however, I don’t think I played a single match that I didn’t enjoy. The game offers an immediately recognisable concept, that manages to innovate and surprise, and it’s entirely unlike anything else I’ve played before. Just like a secret clubhouse, it’s likely to lose its allure if you spend all your time there - but it’s exciting as hell to to visit in a snatched moment.

If you were to watch a trailer for recent horror co-op game The Blackout Club, it’d be pretty easy for you to see its play on 80’s nostalgia. With popular properties such as It and Stranger Things following a team of ragtag teens working to fight against the great big bad, the game looks to opt into this trend too. Thankfully, the more you play of The Blackout Club the more it feels less and less like a cash in on a niche and instead a celebration of it. It achieves this to a degree that ...

So while it's fun at first, The Blackout Club just doesn't have enough going for it to keep players engaged for longer than a couple of hours. The game becomes a boring, repetitive slog that gets less scary and more annoying the longer it's played. We once considered it one of our most anticipated horror games of 2019, but it fails to live up to expectations, to say the least.

Have you ever wanted to play as one of those meddling kids who foil the town evildoer? How about doing so with some of your friends? If you love sneaking around backyards and climbing out windows late at night, I think you might just be the sort of person The Blackout Club is looking to recruit.

As I leapt through the open window, I had the sudden thought that I should feel like a trespasser here. Its the middle of the night but I’m now standing in the darkness of a strangers kitchen. I wondered how I would feel if I found out random teenagers had snuck through my house each night, and reminded myself to check the windows before going to sleep. But those thoughts evaporated when The Shape came crashing in through the front door. Next thing I knew I was screaming through the backyards, alerting every Sleeper and Lucid around me, and hoping...

The Blackout Club is a strong addition to the co-op horror genre. Enemies and gameplay are really well handled, and playing with friends is a brilliant experience. If the story was a little more in-depth and better paced, this might be considered unmissable. As it is, The Blackout Club is a worthwhile game if not an essential one.

The problem is that I can see the potential The Blackout Club had. The concept is great, but it's not executed properly. The prologue is fantastic, but it's not the representative of the whole game. The multiplayer is present, but it's not great. Because of this potential and given the fact that it's an only-online game, right now, I view it as a disappointment. I really hope that Question updates the game and improves it as time goes on.

Spooky things always happen at night. If the Nightmare on Elm Street taught us anything, it’s that you should never, never fall asleep when there’s creepy business afoot. A small town is experiencing blackouts, and residents are waking up with no recollection of the acts they’ve committed while they’re asleep. The Blackout Club has a simple enough premise where a group of teenagers investigate what’s going on in their town. As it turns out this co-op horror title is so, so much more complex than the first moments might lead to you believe. With gameplay that promises to be equal...

Stranger things have happened, but they're rarely as scary or as fun as The Blackout Club, a dynamic co-op adventure that beckons with its bellowing song of hypnosis.
