The Casting of Frank Stone starts off well with an interesting premise and slow build so we can get to know its characters. Unfortunately it spends too much time on this that it forgets about the payoff.

The Casting of Frank Stone spins a cinematic narrative that ditches most of Dead by Daylight's deep lore in favor of uninspiring choices.

Supermassive and Behaviour team up for a fun horror story, but not without several faults.

It’s been over eight years since the asymmetric multiplayer horror game Dead By Daylight first shocked players with its brutal gameplay and eclectic roster of characters dubbed killers and survivors. Since DBD’s beginning though there’s always been a call for more. With lore presented throughout the game via little more than short cinematics, stories and flavour text it’s only now that we’ve begun to see this world open up. In the last few years, we’ve had a dating sim and even a ...

I had high hopes for Frank Stone, but Supermassive has written scarier, better narrative-focused horror games. Creating a unique story-driven game set in the Dead by Daylight universe is a great idea, but Frank Stone doesn't focus enough on the elements that make Dead by Daylight unique.

If you've played pretty much any Supermassive game in the past — from Until Dawn to The Quarry — you'll know what to expect from The Casting of Frank Stone. This Dead by Daylight tie-in doesn't quite match the lofty heights of those two games in particular, but it gets pretty close, delivering an engaging popcorn horror experience along the way. We'd have been well up for a few more hours in this universe, which certainly says something, but ultimately results in The Casting of Frank Stone sitting just below greatness.

The Casting of Frank Stone has a compelling story, some fantastic acting and some of the best visuals that Supermassive Games has ever delivered. This is an utter success, and welcoming to all players regardless of how well you know Dead by Daylight. Not even the slightly headachy multiverse shenanigans could stop us coming back.

The Casting of Frank Stone takes Supermassive’s tried-and-true storytelling and mixes it with Dead by Daylight’s lore to tell a chilling, gruesome tale that’s highly replayable and accessible to non-DBD players.

The Casting of Frank Stone includes a few minute improvements over Supermassive Games' approach, like its handful of quicktime event-free gameplay segments and clearer look at the branching paths. But it's still just the same formula with the same pitfalls that have regularly plagued this studio’s near-annual releases in the genre. Middling writing, frequently uncanny animations, and a lack of scares make The Casting of Frank Stone another passable entry in the interactive horror/suspense genre.

For fans of Dead by Daylight, The Casting of Frank Stone is an incredible experience that expands the lore of the game in ways we have wanted to see for so long. For everyone else this will play as a great Supermassive movie based game. I do think that non DBD fans are gonna be missing out because lot of the big moments, reveals, lore and references are just gonna go over their heads, but if you are a fan of Dead by Daylight this is an experience you won't want to miss.

As a Dead by Daylight fan, The Casting of Frank Stone had me squealing with joy at its easter eggs, hints, and lore. This combined with its mysterious plot and engaging dual-timeline structure kept me invested even through the most hands-off sequences. Still, I was left wanting more interactivity, and the game’s conclusion is likely to go over non-DBD players’ heads.

Over the years, Behavior Interactive's Dead by Daylight has become a worldwide phenomenon and one of the most popular multiplayer games still running today thanks to its unique gameplay and the setting, which, from the limited information available in-game, seems to be much deeper and complex than it what may seem at first glance. With The Casting of Frank Stone, developed by Supermassive Games, this setting is now at the forefront, receiving much-deserved development that should please every fan of the original game.

The Dead by Daylight franchise is no stranger to offshoots with nothing to do with asynchronous multiplayer, and custodian Behaviour Interactive is adept at finding the right partner to make those happen. Hooked on You, a dating sim set within the bleak, desolate world of killers and survivors, was in the right hands of Psyop, a team that had previously made waves with KFC dating sim I Love You, Colonel Sanders!

While The Casting of Frank Stone may have been my first experience with a Supermassive Game, it’s encouraged me to check out their back catalog. It’s a compilation of schlocky, homemade horror with a splash of the extraterrestrial to keep things spicy. No matter which way you approach it, as an avid Dead by Daylight fan or someone unfamiliar with the franchise, you’re in for the ride of your life.

Though The Casting of Frank Stone doesn’t make any sweeping changes to the formula etched out by the likes of Until Dawn, The Quarry and The Dark Pictures Anthology, it does manage to effectively marry up that formula with the universe of Dead by Daylight with impressive results. Notably, the usual flaws also apply here, with The Casting of Frank Stone beset by the same plodding horror adventuring, wooden dialogue and mostly annoying cast of characters that are usually the hallmarks of similar efforts. If however, you’re fine with all of that and just want another handsomely made Supermassive Games...

The Casting of Frank Stone feels like a Dark Pictures Anthology game with a Dead by Daylight theme. It lacks the scope and sharpness of a game like The Quarry, but its tight story and creepy vibe will be enough to get the job done this spooky season. The real winners are the Dead by Daylight obsessives who will glean all sorts of lore from this game, enhancing the experience of the most successful horror multiplayer game.

As much as it seems weird that a studio would release a single-player game based on their multiplayer IP, The Casting of Frank Stone makes that premise work. Will it draw player interest enough that they’ll want to play Dead by Daylight after playing this? Probably not, but taken on its own, The Casting of Frank Stone is a solid horror game, and could very well be Supermassive’s finest work to date.

The Casting of Frank Stone may be something for die-hard Dead by Daylight fans or those who truly love Supermassive's adventure games, and can even act as a good entry point for new players, but it can't help but feel like a disappointment. While the story is great and the camera mechanic is neat, the overall experience is dragged down by the likes of repetitive, bland areas and a few aggravating characters. Still, it's great to see a franchise with a lot of variety such as Dead by Daylight expand into other genres, but let's just hope that next time...
