The Flame in the Flood Reviews

Professional reviews from gaming critics

I truthfully didn’t expect The Flame in The Flood to make the impression on me that it did. It’s easily the best survival game I’ve ever played, all the way from its satisfying gameplay to its masterful audio design. In the veritable long river of eShop games on Switch right now, this is one worth making sure you’ve got enough food and water to last a couple weeks.

What stands out most about The Flame in the Flood is that its form of survival isn’t candied up, but sits severe and plain about what chance most of us would have. It’s second even to the slice of America it presents, a piece of a soul set upon a shelf, hoping to be called upon once more. If nothing else, The Flame in The Flood allows that piece to have its moment with sincerity.

While there are quite a few survival games out, the Flame in the Flood approaches the end of the world from a new perspective. Its an enjoyable survival game that always ends in peril; nevertheless, the Flame in the Flood is worth playing over and over again.

The Flame in the Flood successfully captures the intricacies of a better class of survival games and wraps them in a very neat, very pretty package, complete with an awesome alternative-country soundtrack by Chuck Ragan. It also adds a sense of urgency in its narrative, a unique and engaging challenge in the procedurally generated world, the ability to actually ‘complete’ the game via the campaign mode, and, ultimately, a great satisfaction in making it through to the other side and seeing just what truths wait at the river’s end.

While it's not a revolution in terms of survival gameplay, a strong sense of setting and great soundtrack make this a trip down the river well worth taking.

Molasses Flood's unique survival game The Flame in the Flood tells the story of Scout and her dog Aesop. A monumental flood has created a massive river over what was once civilization resulting in few patches of dry land left to provide a haven for the two travelers. A mysterious promise of refuge lies beyond the near-infinite river and Scout is determined to find out if it exists.

Great art, a brilliant soundtrack and a challenging, rewarding survival experience awaits those who have the patience.

The Flame in the Flood is a beautiful procedurally generated survival sim that gains a welcome sense of momentum from the need to stay on the move. Its unwieldy menus and tendency to crash ruins some of the fun, unfortunately, but not enough to diminish the strength of the hopeful, riverbound journey at its core.
