The more you play, the smaller you'll feel in the grandiose expanse presented by Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. It manages to one-up perhaps the most influential game of a generation, masterfully surpassing it in areas I never thought possible.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom lives up to the franchise's pedigree, and then some. It’s a remarkably confident sequel that refines and remixes elements of Breath of the Wild in delightfully surprising ways. The aging Switch hardware it's confined to can’t always keep pace, but that’s a minor blemish on an overall masterful experience that is essential for all Nintendo fans.

Tears of the Kingdom is a great game that makes it hard to go back to Breath of the Wild. It improves on its predecessor in terms of exploring and its sandbox method of gameplay, but fails to update the main combat mechanics and weapon system.

Ultimately, the best thing about the game is that it respects you and your time. There’s never a dull moment, you can always find something to do even if you’ve completed everything on offer, and it makes you feel smart. No game has ever made me feel valued like Tears of the Kingdom, and this, more than anything else, will keep me playing it for years until the next one comes along.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is a wondrous adventure that somehow makes exploring the same Hyrule magical again. The returning Zelda tropes aren’t quite at their strongest yet and there are some technical and mechanical issues, but this incredible feeling of adventure is something that can only be done through a video game. Tears of the Kingdom masterfully builds on its predecessors to bring the new and old together once more.

Breath of the Wild laid the groundwork for what is possible in a Zelda game, and then Tears of the Kingdom took all of that, broke the rules, and added more to that equation. It’s a game that can be experienced at any pace and is the magnum opus, if not the swan song, of an aging console that proves it can still make masterpieces.

It's easy to say without hesitation that Tears of the Kingdom is better than Breath of the Wild. It improves and adds to what was already a great title. It's not a perfect experience through and through, but it lends to the creative side of the franchise with some of the best puzzle-solving in any adventure title to date. While it would still be nice to see a return to form of the shorter and more linearly-focused Zelda titles, it's hard to deny the lasting impact that Tears of the Kingdom will have for many more years to come. It's...

I wish I could rewind this whole experience, just so I can play it for the very first time again because if there is one thing that has now dawned on me, the one thing that has now struck a bit of fear, it’s that I now have to wonder how in the world will Nintendo ever top this. I suppose there’s some solace in knowing that this was the very thing I said about Breath of the Wild, so here’s to the future of the franchise.

A terrific Breath of the Wild follow-up with some brilliant new systems, amazing views and more dungeon-type spaces, plus a slightly deadening emphasis on gathering resources.

As if it was really in doubt, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is another sublime entry in this series. It's not as thoroughly refreshing as Breath of the Wild was six years ago, but as a direct sequel, it takes the same world and manages to transform it with a new over and under world, while Link’s powerful new abilities foster ever-more creative play, and a new epic tragedy unfolds before you. As we head into the Nintendo Switch's twilight years, this is practically essential.

It’s hard to think of another game that’s been as anticipated, analyzed, and argued over prior to launch as The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Given how groundbreaking and popular The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was, hype levels were always going to be, well, legendary, but Nintendo happily stoked the flames, announcing the game early and holding back every scrap of Tears of the Kingdom info for maximum impact (we didn’t even learn the real title of the game until last year).
