Unicorn Overlord’s bounty of tactical systems, beautiful visuals and compelling medieval fantasy make it an early choice for strategy RPG of the year.

Unicorn Overlord seems allergic to risk-taking, and it makes for a safe and enjoyable product that fails to introduce anything new. So when I was given just a passable game, I couldn’t help but be let down.

In a weird way, Unicorn Overlord is the polar opposite of Vanillaware’s previous title, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim. I found 13 Sentinels to be a stand-out, phenomenal and unique sci-fi story, with adequate but simple tactical gameplay. It’s as if they decided that their next title must be its inverse: a complex tactical game with plenty of opportunities to optimise battles, justified by a fantasy tale that’s a little paint-by-numbers. Despite this, Unicorn Overlord maintains the high quali...

Unicorn Overlord is Vanillaware’s custom-built device for capturing the heart of anyone who’s loved watching tiny units bash against each other on a map. It puts a lot of love into each of those units, from what they do and how you can manage them, to their art and direction, down to making each new addition feel impactful. It’s a campaign full of strategy goodness, and I can forgive some quality-of-life nitpicks and repetition when the end result is just this damn good.

Unicorn Overlord might be an early GOTY contender for me. Fans of strategy games should download the demo and play it immediately.

Vanillaware has once again proven its adeptness at capturing the key flavors of classical gaming, before invigorating those flavors with its own distinctive, captivating style. While the formulaic story will win no awards, the satisfaction derived from its absorbing mechanics sees Unicorn Overlord march confidently to victory. A new time sink awaits. Join the Liberation, comrade.

Vanillaware's beautiful art brings to life a staggeringly deep strategy RPG where building units is just as fun as orchestrating battles.

Unicorn Overlord is yet another standout game from a revered developer that sets out to innovate on classic strategy conventions. It achieves these goals with style and substance, resulting in a game that strategy afficionados should absolutely consider jumping into. While I don't think this title is a particularly good entry point for newcomers to the genre, this game is clearly aware of its audience and it plays to those strengths. Spectacular.

Draw from enough unique inspirations, and eventually, a game begins to feel entirely novel. That’s the sensation that emerges as you play Unicorn Overlord, Vanillaware’s vast fantasy adventure of tactics, strategy, and storytelling. I was consistently reminded of other systems and mechanics from prior genre releases, but the resulting combination felt consistently original and entertaining, even after many hours of battle and exploration.

“Unicorn Overlord is the strategy RPG fans of the genre have been waiting for.”
Read Full ReviewUnicorn Overlord might be my favorite game so far this year. I loved Ogre Battle back in the day. March of the Black Queen is one of my favorite old-school games. I never would have expected Vanillaware to capture that feeling so thoroughly and even add its own twists to make it all the better, but here we are. You get from this game what you give, and it constantly rewards you handsomely for overcoming its challenges. Between great tactical gameplay, a massive and robust cast of voiced characters, a beautiful soundtrack and art style, and a great story, this...

From the creators of 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, Unicorn Overlord shines in combining overworld exploration and an innovative battle system in the iconic Vanillaware style. Traverse the vibrant world, cultivate a grand army with over 60 uniquely designed characters, and grow your renown throughout the five nations in this unique epic fantasy experience!
Read Full ReviewUnicorn Overlord’s story may not have thrilled me, but I still can’t recommend it highly enough to strategy fans. Every time I found myself longing for more character depth or a less predictable story, those critiques were washed away by the next hour-long battle pushing my strategic abilities to their limit. It’s hard to focus on shallow character dynamics when every brain cell is focused on developing the perfect set of tactics to pull off a clutch victory, after all. The sheer joy of leading your army to victory through nothing but clever planning is hard to overstate, and I’m...

Strategy RPGs are not normally known for innovation. To be clear, there’s nothing wrong with slowly building on an established formula. Plenty of franchises do an amazing job making tiny changes to winning ideas. This just means that unusual new games land with that much more impact. Unicorn Overlord feels familiar and brand new all at the same time. I was simply not prepared for this kind of approachable complexity in a strategy RPG. These are new depths we’re exploring, make no mistake.

A wonderfully weird console strategy game that’s inspired by the past but forges its own very distinct legend, with beautiful visuals and deep but accessible gameplay.

If there's one major knock against Unicorn Overlord, it's that its story and characters are just a bit below what I'd expect from the same studio that produced 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim. It's clear Vanillaware is capable of designing some standout protagonists, but that doesn't really happen in Unicorn Overlord, which prioritizes quantity over quality. Alain is a pretty dull hero at the best of times, even with the ability to choose options for him in key moments, and the cast around him is almost entirely made up of fantasy stereotypes. The witch who is older than she looks, the...

The game delivers story cutscenes no matter how you progress, so long as you are progressing. Technically there are a lot of junction points that let you tackle later story beats sooner, but I suggest taking your time and smelling the roses. Heck, speaking of time, if my glowing remarks about this game aren’t enough for you, Unicorn Overlord has a demo across all platforms that not only offers a lot of playtime but will even let you transfer your save file to the full game. Who can say “no” to free?
