WarioWare: Move It! is a return to form (pun intended) for the WarioWare series that feels long overdue. It cleverly utilises the unique capabilities of the Joy-Con in ways that haven’t been done before, all while remaining both endearing and funny. While the simplicity of Party Mode is both its greatest strength and weakness, WarioWare: Move It! is easily WarioWare at its best and the most fun you’ll have looking goofy.

As comical and outlandish it remains, WarioWare: Move It! and its admirable attempt to add legitimacy to the Switch's motion controls result in an experience that's both inconsistent and at times simply all too unclear to work out. When it works, the ideas posed and the involvement needed do manage to draw a smile at the absurdity one is voluntarily offering, let alone being presented on-screen. Everything about Move It! feels like it should work, and when it does it’s a lot of fun. The problem is that doesn't always work. Some rotten apples in the microgame selection and the Joy-Con hardware's awkward fit with the overall concept muddy up an otherwise good time. Given the discombobulating nature of WarioWare, some muddying can be acceptable up to a point, but Move It! occasionally crosses the line from being playfully antagonistic to frustrating for the wrong reasons.

Also worth noting is that Charles Martinet doesn’t voice Wario this time around. There’s a surprising amount of voiced dialogue in this one, which makes it a bit more noticeable that this is the first time Wario is talking since Martinet stepped away, but it’s a solid effort for the new actor’s first go at the character. There’s so much charm to the story and all the acting that even if the voice isn’t the same as before, the delightfully crass and crude character at the center of it is just as appealing.

The Nintendo Switch has a deluge of amazing party games, many of which were produced by Nintendo. WarioWare: Smooth Moves isn’t going to unseat the last Mario Party game or any of the Jackbox titles, but it’s still a fun romp for those who miss the days of waving Wiimotes around, despite its flaws.

WarioWare: Move It! utilizes the Joy-Con to its full potential, delivering the quick-paced, quirky fun you'd expect from such a brilliant franchise. While Story mode is a blast, the game only offers a few hours of content outside its clever but somewhat disappointing multiplayer. Move It! won't replace a certain red-hatted plumber's party and family game staples any time soon, but Intelligent System's creativity is something to be applauded.

In 2021, I criticised WarioWare: Get it Together for its needlessly complicated control scheme, and wistfully remembered the intuitive and easy controls of the WarioWare Smooth Moves for the Nintendo Wii. One of the main criticisms of Get It Together! was its lootbox-esque mechanics surrounding prezzies for in-game characters, which felt grindy for some players. However, these were used to level up characters for the Wario Cup and give single players something to work towards after beating the story; with Move It! there is less for individual fans to strive for post-story besides new high scores. The WarioWare franchise may be weird, but it actually serves a rather utilitarian role for Nintendo, as they often use the games as showcases for whatever new hardware features and gimmicks they’ve cooked up. Despite this, Wario has never quite found his footing on the unique Switch hardware. 2021’s WarioWare: Get It Together! focused on character-driven multiplayer with mixed success and only two years later we now have WarioWare: Move It!, a throwback of sorts to the motion-controlled Wii era.

Ever since its first title 20 years ago, the WarioWare franchise has shapeshifted to take advantage of the capabilities and gimmicks of whatever the current Nintendo platform was. But the first entry on Switch, Get It Together, bucked that trend, putting you in control of the actual cast of characters in platforming-style microgames instead of taking advantage of the Switch’s unique traits.
