Wasteland 3's odd flavor of storytelling and deliberate sense of unease make it one of the more interesting RPGs I've played in a long while.
Technical blemishes aside, Wasteland 3 harkens back to the days of the classic CRPG
By the time your knee is deep in the snow, politics, and blood Wasteland 3’s Colorado is submerged in, there’s an underlying hook firmly under the skin. Consequences to actions and conversations neatly knit together every other aspect of InXiles’s love letter to the golden age of RPGs. In the modern market, the elements of RPGs have been reduced to menial threads to support button-bashing gameplay. Wasteland 3 scales things back, takes its time. There’s no rush, no forced attempts at being profound while falling flat on its face.
Overall, Wasteland 3 is an easy recommendation for RPG fans. It's a wild ride from start to finish - one that is well worth every hour and playthrough spent on it. Prior to launch, one developer stated that Wasteland 3 was "epic in size", but experiencing it first-hand proves that this is an understatement, that the game has much more to offer players than first glance, and that the game is worth playing, time and again.
So, when all is said and done, Wasteland 3 provides a character-filled, tactically challenging gameplay experience, providing you have the patience to get to it. Even with that said though, I certainly have enjoyed my time with the game, and I have every intention to keep on playing it.
Brian Fargo decided to show us the postapocalyptic world of the Wasteland series once again. But this time, we leave the deserts of Arizona and go to the snow-covered, mile-high Colorado.
The single-player in Wasteland 3 runs fine, but the co-op is currently a hot mess. If you plan to play co-op, wait for a few more patches before picking it up.
When the issues of a game are rolled and stomped by its greatness, then it’s something to invest on if you have some spare.
Thankfully these issues don’t bring the experience down a great deal though. Wasteland 3 is a meticulously crafted RPG with a world that you’ll truly want to throw yourself into. And if you do, it’s likely to consume a hundred hours of your life, or perhaps even more if you let it. It’s got some brilliant dialogue, plenty of gut-wrenching decisions to make, combat that never becomes a chore, and a character development system that you’ll obsess over. Even if you’ve never dipped your toes into the series before, you should give Wasteland 3 a try. As RPGs go, they don’t get much better than this.
Wasteland is back and better than ever with all new settings, narratives and gameplay, but with that same wacky flavor the franchise is known for. This evolution of Wasteland comes with plenty to do for all levels of players. Veteran players will notice continued themes while the title still remains accessible to newer players. Updated gameplay, visuals and character statistics create a new experience like never before. Combat has been overhauled from previous installments to be smoother than before while adding new elements, like Precision Strikes. The title's commitment to player choice means that Wasteland 3 is a cornucopia of replayabilitiy while providing new content to explore. Gorgeous visuals and art design beg players to sink some time into the Colorado wastes without thinking too much about it. Wasteland 3 is even more approachable in a way that Wasteland 2 may not have been for its time. It's a great title for sure, but could benefit from some editing that could streamline the game a little more without making the player feel like an errand boy. One thing is certain, it does continue to carry the franchise's mantle in a completely new and refreshing way. It feels that inXile have hit their stride with this latest installment and have continued to flesh out the Wasteland world that is committed to individuality. Wasteland 3 is a world of open adventure, thrills and a deluge of blood. So what are you waiting for, Ranger? Get out there.
A lengthy, story-driven RPG set in a wacky, post-nuclear snowscape full of turn-based tactical gunfights.
Wasteland 3 is a party-based strategy RPG game developed by InXile Entertainment and published by Deep Silver. It’s the latest entry in the Wasteland series and takes place in the cold wastelands of Colorado. The title is released six years after its predecessor, Wasteland 2, which was successfully funded on Kickstarter and released to critical acclaim in 2014. The original Wasteland was originally developed by Interplay in 1988 and was the first-ever video game set in a post-apocalyptic wo...
Wasteland 3 is a rich RPG experience, offering unprecedented flexibility in combat and story choices.
Make friends with weirdos in snowy Colorado.
A fantastic RPG that superbly mixes player choice and great combat to create something bigger than the sum of its parts.
Wasteland 3 is one of the best RPGs around. The world is fantastic, the characters are interesting, it is packed with content, and combat is engaging. It has a few issues, but the game is just too good for them to distract me.
There are a few misgivings related to Wasteland 3's technical aspects, mechanics, and overall challenge. However, its cast of characters (both old and new), the switch to a traditional turn-based combat system, and branching paths filled with decisions and dire consequences make for a superb journey with the Desert Rangers.
While I enjoyed Wasteland 2, it’s an inherently flawed game. It’s designed as a fun blast to the past, which is both it’s greatest strength and weakness. Much like fellow early Kickstarter project Pillars of Eternity, it’s more concerned with recreating the past than moving towards the future. It was more a modern retread of the original Wasteland than a proper sequel.
Wasteland 3 is as deep a CRPG as you’re ever likely to play, with meaningful choice and consequence in abundance, if you can get past the frequent crashes and array of irritating bugs.
Wasteland 3 invokes feelings of classic RPGs such as Fallout and manages to nail the feel and tone perfectly in a modernized setting.
Lurid characters, a deep RPG system, and captivating combat set in an unhinged apocalypse - inXile Entertainment’s latest shouldn’t be missed.
Wasteland 3 is one of the best RPGs I've played in years, and it's one you absolutely should not skip.
“Wasteland 3 is a rewarding game that offers unprecedented choice and is a great jumping on point for new players.”
Wasteland 3 is a heady crescendo of post-apocalyptic story-telling. Its combat is compelling and fun while its characters and overall plot are engrossing, even when it goes to some dark places. A must-play for tactical RPG fans.
If you’re a big fan of the original Wasteland games, or just an RPG fan in general, then I highly recommend picking up Wasteland 3 and giving it a try. There really isn’t any excuse not to. The open-ended nature of the world and the choices that you have put you in full control of what happens throughout the story and it really sets a high bar for any future titles looking to offer the same kind of immersion and storytelling.
Wasteland 3 is a marked improvement in most areas from its predecessor. Not only that, but it’s the best post-apocalyptic CRPG I’ve played since Fallout: New Vegas, and one of the better RPGs I’ve played in a while. The Fallout series was inspired by Wasteland and went on to eclipse the original game, but this is the first time since where the tables feel like they're starting to reverse. And all of this is without touching on the co-op mode that I didn't have the chance to tinker with. Colorado is a brutal and unrelenting place to explore, yet I loved doing so. I eagerly look forward to giving it another shot to see just how much the Desert Rangers can make or break it.
Wasteland 3 shines with clear dedication to crafting the best game its genre has ever seen. Excellent visuals are matched by top notch voice work and some of the best and most natural writing I have seen in a video game not made by Naughty Dog. The combat is a brutal dance where one wrong move can spell disaster, but victory is an exhilarating rush that never becomes old. Wasteland 3 cements inXile as one of the best in the business in the RPG genre and affirms that Xbox has something truly special on their hands.
Video game developers love a post-apocalyptic setting. Hundreds of titles are set in the aftermath of civilizations collapse in the face of nuclear war, zombies, civil unrest, environmental upheaval, or vague McGuffins. A post-apocalyptic series that rose above the rest was Fallout, which mixed catastrophe and desperation with humor to great effect. However, Fallout almost didn’t exist. Instead, it was meant to be a sequel to 1988’s Wasteland, but when Interplay couldn’t obtain the OP, a new series was born. After a long hiatus for the franchise, Wasteland 2 was released in 2014, and now a sequel, Wasteland 3 is coming out.
Wasteland 3 doesn't add much to the tactical RPG formula, but its impressive freedom of choice, its dark and rough humor, and its satisfying combat make it one of the more memorable entries in the genre to date. Its large world is packed with upwards of 60 hours of content for a single playthrough, too, so there’s a lot to chew on here. It's a pity Wasteland 3 didn't launch in winter, as I can think of few companions I'd rather be snowed in with.
