YS is what you’d call a seasoned veteran, having made its debut back in 1987 on the PC-8801. Throughout the years, the franchise has gone to amass quite the loyal fandom that vehemently recommends it as a top Action RPG – and you know what, they’re not wrong. This title, without a doubt, is an addictive concoction of hack-and-slash bliss. Like Diablo and Borderlands before it, there’s a healthy amount of looting mixed in, too. Both of these ideologies come together to create a murder ...

Still, I can’t recommend Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana enough, and I'm ecstatic to see it back. Whether you’re a new player looking for a fresh adventure or a returning player considering a second playthrough, don’t let a barebones port dissuade you. Thanks to its engaging gameplay and entertaining story, there’s still a wonderful action RPG here, and PS5 has become the definitive way to play. While I believe Ys IX is the better game, which is also coming to PS5 next year, Ys VIII remains a classic that any RPG fan should experience.

Anyone who asks me what my favourite type of gaming genre soon learns that role playing games are my jam. The fantastic stories, vast world exploration, and in-depth characters developed, combined with a smooth battle system, will keep me playing for hours on end. Japanese-based RPG’s in particular appeal to me in such a way that it’s hard to me to start a game and, at minimum, invest a good sixty hours of time into.

The Ys series has been setting the bar for combat and music in action role-playing games since 1987. The latest game, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana, is no different, but it does have something more recent entries have lacked—a memorable story.

Overall Ys VIII the Lacrimosa of Dana is a compelling and entertaining JRPG. I often found myself torn between pushing the main story forward and doing all the side activities, but the real tell was I just really enjoyed spending time in the game no matter what I was doing. The graphics, music, and game mechanics all work well together to provide many hours of delightful and fun entertainment.

Ys has finally exited its long hiatus and has brought with it a strong action (and dinosaur packed) outing full of classy underboob.

Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA has its share of flaws but its very satisfying combat more than makes up for it while the fun exploration and good story kept me going through all of it. Ys fans will love this one, and those new to the series are sure to get some enjoyment with the solid fast paced action that might turn them into fans as well. This is definitely a game I would like to have with me to play if I ever get shipwrecked on a deserted island.

Ys VIII sets the bar high for Adol Christin's next adventure. This is one of the best Ys titles yet, and one of the best RPGs of the year.

Ys VIII is, without a doubt, a huge step for the franchise. In stripping away a lot of the usual narrative tropes the series is usually known for, Nihon Falcom have put a fresh spin on the franchise that puts characters and small moments over grand adventures and vast mysteries. Tied together by a fast-paced combat system and great music, the negatives of Lacrimosa of Dana are far outweighed by the positives, and this is a game that any JRPG fan would be a fool to sleep on.

Nihon Falcom has crafted yet another fantastic entry in the Ys series. The same great gameplay and storytelling elements that have become synonymous with the series, along with exceptional graphics. Sure, the top-down view has been replaced but the new 3D graphics help brings the world to life and I enjoyed the voice lines. Combine that with some enjoyable character development and a game that spans over 40+ hour and you got a game that you won’t want to put down for a while.

The years may pass, the eras change, but there a few things that never do seem to change. Among the few of them is Adol Christin's desire for adventure, which really knows no bounds. Following his adventures in the mysterious islands of Canaan, the red-headed adventurer and his best friend Dogi resume their journey towards the Afrocan continent, only to find themselves stranded on what seems like a deserted island, the Isle of Seirens, little knowing that the island not only has quite a history but also that it will be the location of their best adventure yet.

Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana is the follow up to Ys: Memories of Celceta. It’s an action RPG which at its heart is all about adventuring and exploration. Ys is a long-running series that has been around since the 80s, but you don’t need to be familiar with any of the previous games to understand what’s happening here. While there are some returning characters and a few brief references to past events, each game features its own self-contained story, and this one's no different.
