Alan Wake Remastered is a prime example of if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it. The story, and the way it’s told is truly timeless, and it's a game that everyone should experience. Some of its design might be stuck in the past, but none of it ever feels detrimental to the overall experience, and the visual facelift just makes the experience that much better. Whether you’re a new fan of Remedy’s work, or a long-time player, there’s never been a better excuse to visit or return to Bright Falls.

I don't see why anyone shouldn't pick this title up; it's phenomenal, enthralling, and — possibly most important — fun.

There were so many factors pointing towards the Nintendo Switch port of Alan Wake Remastered to be a beautiful disaster of cataclysmic proportions. The first factor was the Switch’s hardware itself, known for not being able to properly render a demanding AAA outing, unless your name is DOOM or The Witcher 3. The second factor was Remedy and Epic quietly dropping the game on the eShop without prior advertisement or upfront reviews, and at a discount nonetheless. Finally, there were a handful...

And the soundtrack? Oh, the soundtrack. Each episode of the game is capped off with a song as you stare at the game’s logo, and these are some of the most poignant parts of the game. The songs fit beautifully, and add a certain something to Alan Wake that just can’t be replicated. The voice acting deserves a shout-out too, from all the impassioned yells and screams throughout the game to Matthew Porretta’s smooth readings of the game’s various manuscripts, it’s all great.

From Remedy Entertainment comes a remaster of their 2010 game Alan Wake which could aptly be described as good enough.

Alan Wake Remastered introduces a surreal and atmospheric story to a new generation, and provides a nostalgic retelling for veteran fans. Find out if the survival horror gameplay is still fun, and if the enhanced visuals are worth the price tag in this review.

We tell you, it’s a good game! It’s not average! It might have some problems here and there, but you have to admit it is a “Good” game.

The original was always highly simplistic and repetitive, and neither the passage of time or being in 4K can do anything to improve this disappointingly trivial actioner.

Alan Wake Remastered doesn’t overhaul the original foundations, but it does add welcome improvements to a game that has mostly stood the test of time.

Alan Wake Remastered hits the mark as a remaster. It’s a tangible improvement in visual fidelity and performance that interested first-time players should be directed to, but I wouldn’t recommend veterans dive back in, as they’ve likely seen all it has to offer. Alan Wake Remastered is out today for $29.99 on PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X | S, and the Epic Games Store.

Alan Wake is a name few people will recognise outside the video game cultural zeitgeist, i.e. if you didn’t play it when it was released all the way back in 2010, you’ve most likely never played or heard about it since. Despite its soon to be discovered brilliance in game design, it never quite reached the same level of mainstream appeal that its far more recognisable predecessor, Max Payne, seemed to benefit greatly from. Even so, from the title alone you know it’s a game made by Remed...

Fans of Control or those simply curious about who ‘that Alan Wake guy’ is would do well to pick this remastered edition up. At a solid asking price, it’s a fantastic narrative experience that’s worth playing even with the janky older controls, while returning fans will get a kick out of reliving the experience on modern hardware.

We need more games like Alan Wake – a horror experience that scares you, but not in the ways we often see. It has many of the genre's trappings like carefully placed jump scares, ax-wielding murders lurking in the shadows, and unsightly supernatural threats, but the true terror comes from words written on pieces of paper and thoughts expressed by protagonist Alan Wake.

Barring some antiquated gameplay elements from a decade ago, Alan Wake Remastered is a stellar facelift for a beloved action-horror thriller experience.

Alan Wake is a fantastic game, while Alan Wake Remastered remains just a great port. Yes, it loses something with the new shiny visuals and a few things have not withstood the test of time, but everything else is still fantastic. Especially that story!

That being said, those who enjoyed Alan Wake back in the 360 era will no doubt find some joy with the Remaster and those who are visiting Bright Falls for the first will definitely enjoy it. It's just a little dated.

If you've never played Alan Wake, this is the best possible way to experience the game. For anyone who loves horror or Remedy's other titles, there's a ton to unpack here with an engaging narrative and stellar gameplay. The remastered enhancements bolster the game even further, giving it a place in today's gaming world, and while the gameplay doesn't perhaps hold up as well as it did in 2010, Alan Wake Remastered is still as joyous as it was back then and a perfect treat for the Halloween season.
