Whilst the concept is there in the title, the intricacies of Ape Out’s are revealed the more you play. Every aspect creates a dazzling jazz mixtape that reverberates from eyes, to ears, to thumbs.  And you’re an ape. Which is great.

There’s something special about a live music performance. The passion, the excitement, and that undeniable urge to sway can overwhelm us in the best way. When a song is at its peak, you’ll notice how a room quiets down and, regardless of who everyone arrived with, the reverberance becomes the crowd’s singular dancing partner. The power of music and its capacity to widen our understanding of any subject have been studied for generations. Its effects on our emotions however, requires no f...

Should you dive into APE OUT? Indie junkies who were enamored with Hotline Miami beyond its aesthetic will find lots to like about the feel of the combat and tight integration with the soundtrack. The close-range action has a better feel than most top-down games that lean on firearms. The game is a tight package that hits all the right notes when things are working well, though it can possibly push you into madness if you falter. 8/10 dismembered arms

A marvelous example of what can be done when talented individuals think outside of the box. Ape Out features challenging – occasionally annoying – but wholly addictive gameplay, quirky and attractive visuals awash with colour, all backed with a breathless score. This odd release is proof positive that creativity in gaming remains alive and well. Go Ape.

Devolver Digital have a great track record when it comes to games; From fast-paced action thrillers like Hotline Miami and Mother Russia Bleeds, to cerebral experiences like The Talos Principle and Always Sometimes Monsters. Each release they’ve published has been an exercise in polished gameplay, visual design, and fun. Ape Out is no exception.

Whether or not I make it to the end of the level is almost immaterial; I feel powerful and free from the moment the game begins.

Some games like to take their time and introduce you to their worlds and characters, doing the necessary legwork to draw you in and make you feel invested. Other games prefer to show you what they’re all about from the get-go, and Ape Out is definitely the latter. You begin in a cell. You break out. Your job is to make it across each procedurally generated maze while fending off attacking soldiers. This is the whole game – and it’s an utter delight.

Ape Out isn’t for the faint-hearted, but if you enjoy Hotline Miami-style gameplay, I urge you to give it a go. Be prepared to die and die some more, but this is a game that’ll get into your psyche, and beg you to carry on. As you progress, your heart will likely be beating as fast as the music, but the adrenaline pumping around your system will only spur you on further. Each death is a tragedy, but each one only makes that eventual success ultimately more rewarding.

Despite the repetition, after many deaths, it does not feel repetitive, because other variation is added. Some of the levels take place in darkness, and you must avoid the swinging torch beams of the guards. Others have explosive barrels of oil, or bombs falling from the sky, a last ditch effort to subdue your primal rage. One extremely cathartic smash and grab takes place in a zoo. And there are smaller details to admire, too: the music for the stage set in a military base sounds like marching snare drums. Bloodsoaked carpet makes a squishy noise when you walk over...

Ape Out is an absolutely fantastic action game with an incredible sense of style. While the levels are randomized, the near-constant introduction of new elements gives each area its own personality, forcing the player to regularly update their play style to avoid or take advantage of the latest changes. Each album can be played in standard progression with infinite chances to complete each track from the start or in Arcade mode, attempting to clear the whole album on a single life while racking up the best score possible, making for excellent replayability. The four albums' worth of content (plus bonus...

Ape Out is an intoxicating fusion of percussion and destruction that oozes style from every angle. Its procedurally built levels tend to blend into one another a bit but its bloody rampages are filled with nuance. Beneath the simple controls is depth that’s kept me returning for days after successfully completing the epilogue. Gorgeous and compulsive, if this ’50s-inspired, jazz-fueled jaunt is the future of gorilla warfare, the team behind Ape Out can make a monkey out of me anytime.
