Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is an example of Don’t Nod doing what Don’t Nod does best - deliver an enthralling, story-driven title that had me hooked in its world and characters from the opening titles. It’s elevated by inspirations from other titles with bigger budgets in this genre and is all the better for it with a stunning world that invites you to explore.

I didn't wait for Banishers, and I didn't expect the game to be such a pleasant surprise for me. It's a wonderful and quite long adventure, filled with side stories. Banishers is a game haunted by the ghost of satisfaction – satisfaction from good gameplay and a great story. I want more.

I have a soft spot for DONTNOD, a studio behind some of my favourite, most inventive titles. There’s almost something there for everyone, from a futuristic beat-em-up in Remember Me, the occult hit that was Vampyr, and of course narrative adventures in Life is Strange (and the criminally undervalued Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit). DONTNOD returns with something unique this time around, though you can certainly see how Banishers Ghosts of New Eden borrows a little bit from each game t...

If you were faced with an impossible choice, how would you respond? If you were allowed to turn back time and bring back the love of your life from the dead, how far would you go to make that happen? Would it be worth sacrificing your beliefs, and everything that makes you who you are? What about sacrificing others? What if they deserve it? That’s the core premise that sits at the heart of Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden from the talented team over at DON’T NOD. Here, they’ve brought us a...

Banishers is a spooky, loving tale about two incredible people. I cried a few times, both for these two characters I grew to adore, and for the very sad stories of others just trying to make it in a difficult world. While the combat is not spectacular, and the graphics are middling, everything else makes this a very special game. With superb writing, excellent performances, a clever central mechanic, and thoughtful, engaging stories, Banishers is Don’t Nod’s best game yet.

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is the latest title from developer Don’t Nod, best known for their work on titles such as Life is Strange, Jusant, and the spiritual predecessor of this game, Vampyr. Ghosts of New Eden is a narrative-driven action RPG with a heavy decision-making element. With Don’t Nod’s past experiences, it is hard not to feel that Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden has taken on some of the best parts of their previous games and put it all together here.

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden offers an interesting twist on tried and true RPGs mechanics. A form of a morality system is implemented, but instead of being simply good or evil, it's based one what Red wants to do with Antea's soul which adds a sense of personal investment to one's choices beyond choosing which side with which to align. The mix of detective work to remove hauntings blended with the action-oriented combat elements helps make the role of Banisher seem more complete, as they have to rely on several different skill sets in order to accomplish their goals. This...

At first glance, it's clear that Banishers is a mix of a few different concepts from across multiple mediums. The game is practically The Exorcist meets The Witcher, set in 1695 and presented in 35mm. Picture Father Kerras meets Geralt of Rivia, and that’s basically who the main character, Red mac Raith, is. In gameplay, Banishers will be familiar to anyone who has played games such as God of War or Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, making it an approachable but occasionally derivative experience. However, as development studio Don’t Nod has proven many times over, the strength of its games comes from...

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is a fantastic piece of storytelling, and it gives you a compelling world, people and lore for you to delve into. While it labours in some areas, you can put your own personality and feelings into this largely linear adventure, making this a game and a tale that deserves to be experienced.

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is a fantastic video game.  It is the type that raises the medium and shows how incredible these experiences can be.  The combat is good enough to rarely hinder your enjoyment as you help or harm the local populace.  In an era where new single-player IPs are hard to find, this one deserves to succeed.

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is a hauntingly beautiful tale of two lovers embarking on a treacherous journey that tests their relationship through tragedy. With a world and combat that emulate the God of War reboot, and side quests similar to The Witcher 3, this is one of 2024's early must-plays, even if its moral decisions are restrictive.

Banishers: Ghost of New Eden isn’t the most polished game out there. With a love story at its heart that asks you to ponder the morality of your choices throughout, however, you can’t help but be drawn into its world. It also helps that it’s a game filled with variety; exploration is finely balanced with combat and investigation to create an experience that keeps you on your toes and stops tedium from seeping in, even though none of those three aspects are particularly impressive by themselves. Basically, it’s greater than the sum of its parts, especially if you get on...

Despite some frustrating design choices, pacing and technical issues, there is a prevailing magnetic chemistry to Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden that is felt within its narrative and mirrored in its gameplay, in large part thanks to its two brilliantly written and acted protagonists. Its thoughtful dissection and unique exploration of grief ultimately resonated with me in a way that allowed me to forgive most of its other sins.

Don't Nod has taken several key lessons from Vampyr and applied them to great effect with its second action RPG. Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden might not be revolutionary in anything that it does, and from a gameplay standpoint, it can sometimes feel a bit too straightforward for its own good, but with a well-realized setting, captivating story, excellent protagonists, and genuinely compelling choice-and-consequence moments, it's an easy game to recommend to fans of the genre.

There's a lot to talk about in just the first quarter of such a gargantuan game. The world design and attention to detail are stunning, strategic gameplay in both exploration and combat scenarios is sure to keep anyone with even a passing interest in fantasy settings engaged, and the writing is so good that even the EULA agreement is worth reading. I can't attest to the conclusion, but if Larian manages to keep this momentum throughout, it'll be hard to see Baldur’s Gate 3 as anything other than the definitive fantasy RPG for this generation.
