Blue Reflection: Second Light is the sequel to the 2017 JRPG Blue Reflection, developed by Gust and published by Koei Tecmo. Despite being a sequel and having a spin-off anime series that aired in 2021, Second Light is mostly a standalone experience, with a new set of characters, a new story, and only slight references to the original.

Some games unexpectedly get sequels so now that we have Blue Reflection: Second Light, let's see if this magical girl RPG is any good.

Blue Reflection: Second Light is a very different game from its predecessor, but an excellent one. The combat is fun, the social interactions are excellent, and the story is pleasant. I’m so happy Gust chose to continue with this franchise, and I hope they return to it again in the future.

Blue Reflection: Second Light is a step forward for the franchise and one that excels at showing off its unique take on storytelling and solid gameplay.

This review took a long time to make. Why is that? Well, it's because I wanted to be more thorough when analyzing this game's strengths and weaknesses. Blue Reflection: Second Light is a game that's seen as a sort of reboot/sequel to the original Blue Reflection. How does that work? It does away with many controversial aspects while bringing some new takes in the JRPG scene that may or may not benefit it way more in the long run.

Teenage girls with memory issues lead the adventure in Blue Reflection: Second Light. Aside from some aspects that may feel improper to western RPGamers, the game is a solid second entry.

My nerd status runs deep, having been an integral part of my upbringing. Hell, one of my earliest memories is fangirling over Sailor Moon. Something about it resonated with me and grabbed my interest in a vice. Perhaps it was the all-female cast, or maybe my crush on Sailor Jupiter. Whatever it was, Blue Reflection: Second Light attempts to mimic the former point with its playable cast. This game’s the very definition of girl power, but before any scuffs echo out, maybe read over this revie...

For fans of the original game, Blue Reflection: Second Light is a must-play, with yet another engrossing story and some meaningful gameplay enhancements. But even those who haven’t played the original may want to delve into this sequel if they’re into emotionally-charged JRPGs that dare to experiment a little. This is a more serious affair from Gust, with some touching moments as pasts are revealed and new relationships are formed. And with its energetic battle system that keeps you on your toes, it’s captivating from beginning to end.

It really feels like Gust took the criticism of the original to heart here. We’ve gone from a massive stumble of a game with some good ideas to an incredibly solid JRPG that does just about everything it sets out to do correctly. From the character writing to the speedy gameplay, the world design to the excellent soundtrack, this is a game worth taking a look at.

Blue Reflection: Second Light is an improvement over the original in every way. It's a brilliant blend of action and storytelling, where both side complement each other perfectly. Some of the side systems like stealth and facility building are a bit flawed, but the meat of the game is divine – incredible combat, memorable characters, and a stunning soundtrack make this a must-play for any JRPG enthusiast.

We tell you, it’s a good game! It’s not average! It might have some problems here and there, but you have to admit it is a “Good” game.

Blue Reflection: Second Light does a lot of things right. If you don't mind some slight balance issues then the characters and mechanics should keep you interested the entire game through.

Blue Reflection: Second Light is a laid-back JRPG and a great improvement from its predecessor that makes several refinements across the board.

Blue Reflection: Second Light provides an intriguing story and challenging battles despite its derivative gameplay. As such, I’d easily recommend it to fans of both anime and JRPGs.

Reflection: Second Light is a perfect example of what a sequel should be. It takes the ideas put forward by the original and improves all of them. There's better exploration, better visuals, and, most importantly, much better character writing. The original was an average and forgettable JRPG. In contrast, Second Light is one of the best JRPGs released in recent memory.

Blue Reflection: Second Light has players take on a variety of demons as its primary mode of combat. Battles unfold in real-time, with players issuing commands to the girls in a standard JRPG turn-based style. Teams consist of three characters on the battlefield, with one of the other girls serving as a Supporter that can use items or provide buffs and debuffs from the sidelines. Attacks and item consumption use up Ether, which each character recovers at a different speed. This increases with every skill used throughout a battle, meaning that the longer a fight goes on, the shorter the corresponding time between attacks and other special actions. Characters can also “shift Gears,” or assume a higher power level once their Ether recovery rate reaches a certain level. At Gear level 3, they can transform into a Reflector, a stronger form that enables them to access even more powerful attacks.
