EA Motive could have taken a path of least resistance in delivering a Dead Space remake, though I’m thankful for everything they’ve poured into what is a tremendous reimagining of one of gaming’s truly iconic horror games. It’s gorier than ever, the story is made whole, encompassing lore elements once merely pieced together by its fan base, and feels like a genuinely fresh twist on the original.

With this remake, Motive has managed to treat the original Dead Space with the utmost respect whilst rebuilding it to be perfect for today. Almost every improvement serves to enhance the reputation of a horror classic. Dead Space should be the blueprint for creating a truly exceptional remake.

The game is dripping with this unnerving sense of dread. And like before, the necromorphs stand out from other horror game monsters in that there’s a sense of eager maliciousness from them. In a similar vein to the deadites from Evil Dead, there’s the feeling the necromorphs are almost fucking with Isaac as they bang and scream on the other side of a door before scurrying away. The game’s new “Intensity Director” helps play a part in this, as the game (similarly to L4D’s AI director) is constantly paying attention to how you’re playing and changes the intensity of the...

When it was released in 2008, the original Dead Space was thrilling. I loved it so much that I covered its 10 year anniversary just a few years ago. Back then, I stated that whilst it’s a fantastic game, it is starting to show its age. However, despite those games proving to be a phenomenal action horror franchise, it faded away after the third game was released to mixed reactions, and the franchise has been dormant for the past ten years. So what’s a better way to bring it back than a fu...

Despite the occasional bug, Dead Space is a faithful, fantastic remake of a beloved game.

Dead Space rigorously reanimates gaming's best sci-fi horror game. It's clear EA Motive looked at the original title both through the lens of adoring fans as well as talented developers. They keep what worked, morph what didn't, and unlike the game's protagonist, cut off almost nothing. The USG Ishimura has never been more immersive. Only minor missteps keep it from perfection, but not from being an absolutely stunning makeover, and a must-play experience.
Read Full ReviewThe Dead Space series was cancelled a decade ago after three instalments, at a time EA was convinced games-as-a-service were the future. But it turns out single-player blockbusters are still in demand (see also upcoming Star Wars sequel Jedi: Survivor), and there’s plenty of interest in sci-fi horror, as seen by spiritual successor The Callisto Protocol. Better sound the remake klaxon, then.

The Dead Space remake successfully revives a beloved survival horror franchise with gloriously gory aplomb. Nothing that made the original so good has been compromised, even with all the new additions. Bring on Dead Space 2!

Dead Space manages to completely capture what made the original game so good while updating it for the times. As Isaac Clarke exploring the Ishimura is as terrifying as ever with Necromorphs popping out of the wall, but with enhanced visuals and audio are elevated to a new level. The added depth to Isaac's character are a welcomed addition, though his reaction to certain conversations does leave a bit to be desired.

Dead Space and EA Motive pulled off what many had doubted since its announcement. They not only remade Dead Space from the ground up, but they made a superior version of one of the greatest horror games ever made.

Dead Space is a remarkable achievement in design on all fronts. A loving and intelligent remake that reminds players of what has been lost in AAA games and what can be found again if you just know where to look.

Second only to Silent Hill (which has its own remake on the horizon), one of the most beloved horror franchise fans have been dying for a return is Dead Space. Following a mediocre 2013 release of Dead Space 3, the series was on ice for a decade. Finally, EA has listened to the audience and is returning to the terrifying sci-fi horror adventure starting with a remake of the original title that started it all in 2008. Fifteen years and a shiny coat of paint later, the Dead Space remake is here...

The Dead Space remake may not feel entirely necessary, but it improves upon the original with some smart new additions to almost every aspect of its design.

Taken as a whole, Motive Studio's Dead Space remake is an unmitigated success that builds upon its predecessor's story in small yet meaningful ways. It both looks and sounds phenomenal, and the Necromorphs at the heart of the horror-action still remain one of the medium's most bone-chilling adversaries ever. It's been a long time coming, but Dead Space is finally back... to make us whole again.

It feels great to just dive back into the USG Ishimura, though. Dead Space as a concept still holds up, and the reworking EA Motive has provided highlights its best features while shoring up old pitfalls. Sci-fi survival horror fans should get what they want out of this: the return of a classic, with gorgeous graphics and some new twists, but the same old boot-stomping good time.

EA Motive have done incredible work with the Dead Space remake to bring a horror classic up to date, injecting true horror back into the genre alongside considered changes and expansions to the original story. It’s hands down one of the best remakes ever made, and it’s like playing Dead Space for the first time all over again. Welcome back, Isaac.

“Dead Space (2023) feels a little redundant considering the original still holds up, but a well-executed remake still results in a standout action-horror experience.”

Almost perfect if not for the nitty-gritty. If it’s quite there but not enough to push the boundaries, it’s still an awesome game.

Dead Space 3 is a contradiction. Gorgeous but scruffy; tightly packed yet stretched too thin; often frustrating, frequently thrilling and bursting at the seams with stuff, not all of which fits comfortably inside the boundaries the series has set for itself. It's certainly not a great game, except perhaps as a poster child for the kitchen-sink development mentality of a console generation in its twilight months. But it does manage to balance out every misstep with something worthwhile. Sadly, newcomers with no preconceptions will likely enjoy this rollercoaster more than the series' fans.

From visuals to audio quality Dead Space is top end, and even though there are probably glitches, since no game is perfect, I didn't run into a single one during my time with the game, and that says a lot for the game since it's the only game I have played a complete play through on without experiencing a single glitch. From the lighting, environment, sound to the Necromorphs themselves this game provides a nearly perfect Survival Horror environment. So whether you're looking for a quick scare to get the ole adrenaline going, a vast environment to explore and enjoy...

There is so much in Dead Space to mention that doing so would make this review very, very long. Puzzles using Kinesis and Stasis, timed events in airless zones, spacewalks across an asteroid-ridden hull, enough enemies to never leave players comfortable. If not for the submissive, cliché’d last two hours of the story and the un-dramatic terror-inducing scenes, Dead Space would be a rich, enthusiastic game for anyone to enjoy. Yes, its over-dramatized sound may startle the neighbors, bu...

Call it science fiction survival horror, but Dead Space does the genre proud with an engaging story; action that's tense, fast-paced and extremely violent; as well as atmospheric qualities that will get under your skin and make you jump. It may be a newcomer, but the seeds of an incredible franchise have been sown, and EA's in a great position to reap a phenomenal franchise full of scares. If you like survival horror, action or sci-fi, Dead Space needs to be on your radar.
