New name, same beautiful game is how I’d describe EA SPORTS FC 24. There is, once again, nothing revolutionary here, although PlayStyles and HyperMotion V are to be applauded as they further blur the line between virtual and real life football.

As such, this isn't the best platform to choose, and those who have another home console available to them or a PC would be better placed taking that option. If players solely want to play the game in handheld mode, however, this may still be the best option given how EA titles can be a little tetchy on other portable platforms like the Steam Deck. In itself, that's something of a disappointment, but especially when other issues are taken into consideration.

Rather than a full-on reinvention of the FIFA series alongside the name change, EA Sports FC 24 is exactly what we would have expected from FIFA 24 if it had maintained the old naming structure. That is far from a bad thing though, as this annual franchise had already created a solid product that the developers were able to add onto. We’ve all seen the news over the past year or so. FIFA, the clearly not-at-all corrupt sporting organization responsible for handling everything related to football, as well as getting cozy with dictatorships from all shapes and sizes, decided to sever its ties with Electronic Arts, removing the FIFA branding from EA Sports’ annual football simulator. EA Sports FC 24 continues the legacy of a great football game series. It’s easy to pick up for anyone thanks to a good tutorial system and features addicting modes that you can take online and offline. The game’s gorgeous and runs really well on the Xbox Series X. EA has made sure to entrench its football series even without the FIFA license, so I think you can continue to expect only the best from this series going forward. ∎

EA Sports FC 24 isn't the big overhaul that some might have expected, but it doesn't need to be. Instead, it makes subtle but impressive upgrades to most areas of the game, especially in terms of presentation, Ultimate Team and the actual action on the pitch. There's an argument to say that FIFA 23 is worth sticking with for another year, but if you're a big fan of the series (and Ultimate Team in particular), we'd say it's worth your hard-earned money.

Sports FC 24 is not the complete departure from FIFA that its name would suggest. Most of the fundamentals remain in place and the career modes have barely been updated. Then again, Ultimate Team is the series' real money-spinner, coming with the addition of evolutions and mixed gender teams. Overall, the on-pitch gameplay is good, and you can see the extra animations enhancing the football sim, but it isn’t a massive evolution of EA’s flagship series.

What EA has done with its relaunched soccer title is define the series going forward. EA SPORTS FC 24 shows off what sports games are capable of on the field by creating unique circumstances boiled down to an individualistic experience while adding even more stadium and broadcast atmosphere for a series that needed a change. EA SPORTS F1 23 continues the series’ legacy of being the definitive F1 racing experience for gamers. With the updates made to braking, accelerating, and cornering, as well as Precision Drive technology for controller players, the game plays smoother than ever and can easily be enjoyed by players of all skill and interest levels. Braking Point also makes a return with another drama-filled story.
