Originally assumed to be an April Fool’s joke, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon turned out to be very real. This inexpensive DLC (which doesn’t require that you own the original Far Cry 3) taps pretty much every 80s action movie touchstone: cyborgs, mutants, getting the girl, kicking butt for Uncle Sam – heck, it even features Aliens and Terminator star Michael Biehn in the role of its wisecracking hero, Mark IV Cyber Commando Sergeant Rex “Power” Colt.
A wonderfully stupid game with minor issues.
Blood Dragon’s playful focus on humor, nostalgia, and self-aware absurdity allows it to delve into a subject far more important than African arms races or tropical sociopaths: Video games are really, really fun. This comical, explosive shooter takes everything that makes Far Cry 3's gunplay great and dresses it in the kind of wit and over-the-top fun that Duke Nukem Forever is so desperately missing. Blood Dragon is a different beast – and it’s something you shouldn’t miss.
Despite these issues and a missing option to turn down the sometimes-overbearing music, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon is an easy recommendation. It does not require Far Cry 3 to play but like its predecessor, it's crafted with a focus on fun. There's a key sequence in the game we won't spoil that epitomizes awesome and we hope to see Sergeant Rex 'Power' Colt again in the future... or past future.
I say that the current gaming landscape needs more games like this. Games that don’t take themselves so seriously and just give in to the fact that they are stupid action movies. It’s the most refreshing shooter I’ve played in years, and while the gameplay is nothing new, the way it presents itself is nothing short of brilliant. Bring on the stupid.
As critical as I may be, however, I’d rather have Blood Dragon exist as it does than not exist at all. A game this delightfully stupid can only make the world a better place, and I sincerely hope this isn’t the last we see of Rex Colt.
Slightly disappointing, but the compulsive appeal of the parent game carries over and it's nice to play a sci-fi shooter that's not trying to tell a so-called 'epic' story.
The Predator mission hunting four turtles hiding in the sewers surrounded by pizza boxes, making friends with rats… hang on a tick, that sounds familiar.
The cutscenes are animations that look like they’re straight out of a Super Nintendo game which adds to the overall setting and nostalgia strings that the developers are no doubt trying to pull on. The graphics are in no way amazing but it is way that they add to the overall setting that makes them so effective. The retro vibe that this game has going on is not to be missed.
