Gears of War: Reloaded is a remaster of a 2006 game so players going into the game with that in mind will likely be happy with what's on offer. But those expecting a truly modernized version of this flagship Xbox game might be disappointed, especially if they're PlayStation newcomers who have been told for two decades that they're missing out on one of gaming's best experiences.

Gears of War: Reloaded also features a fantastic and thrilling story as players follow Marcus. Getting to know a bit of the lore and characters does a lot to keep that investment going forward with new fans. It'll be great to see Marcus get the respect and love again from first-time players. Playing Gears of War in 2025 is still fun, whether someone has played it or not. From now on, Gears of War: Reloaded is the definitive way to play the first Gears of War game.

2006 feels like a very long time ago, especially as I turned 43 this year. Gears of War, however, is arguably still a teenager, and now an entirely new generation of players gets to enjoy the addictive, action-reload-filled, gib-spewing, chainsaw-revving fun in a multiplatform remaster of the very first game in the franchise. This is the XboxEra Review for Gears of War: Reloaded.

Few games have left as deep an imprint on modern shooters as Gears of War. When it launched on the Xbox 360 in 2006, it set a benchmark for console graphics and established cover-based shooting. The Lancer’s chainsaw bayonet, the weighty roadie run, and the tension of ducking behind cover as bullets whizzed overhead became part of gaming history.

Updated review: Another day, another (remastered?) remaster. What’s really notable about Gears of War Reloaded, formerly Gears of War Ultimate Edition, formerly Gears of War, is that this is another instance of a former Xbox exclusive heading to PlayStation.

Undoubtedly the best Gears of War has ever looked, the continuous finessing of the title has only set to highlight some of its eccentricities in an unflattering light. Charming jank of yesteryear is instead jarring to behold by modern standards, even if the gameplay experience still nails the brief in the lofty year of 2025.

If you told me when the Xbox Series X|S era started that we’d be seeing Gears of War and other Xbox first-party games on the PS5, I would have called you crazy. But here we are, and the first Gears of War is now available on PS5.

Gears of War: Reloaded brings a nearly 20-year-old classic back to life in stunning fashion. The remaster sharpens the action and polishes the visuals, but while the gunplay is timeless, clunky AI and a barebones story remind you this is still a product of its time.

It's showing its age now, but Gears of War: Reloaded finally allows PlayStation gamers to experience one of the best campaigns in the previously Xbox-exclusive series. It's just a shame you'll likely run into AI issues if playing it alone. Needless to say, this is a game best played with others, either enjoying the campaign in co-op, or engaging in its competitive multiplayer modes.

Gears of War: Reloaded is a great way to experience the original Gears game with a friend if neither of you has played it before. Otherwise, it is notable to see a flagship Xbox title on PlayStation, but the gameplay feels especially clunky in 2025.

Gears of War's simple shooting and world design are as strong now as they were in 2007, but Reloaded's more technologically advanced visuals sap away the earlier versions’ grimy cartoon charm.

Gears of War: Reloaded delivers stunning visuals and smooth performance, with 4K textures, upgraded frame rates, and enhanced lighting, making the experience sharper and more immersive than ever. Yet, despite these upgrades, the lack of new content leaves the game feeling very familiar, and the reasons to revisit are sparse.

Gears of War: Reloaded is a fantastic chance to play one of the best FPS campaigns of the last 20 years. With a robust multiplayer mode included, this remains a must-play for both newcomers and fans alike.

Gears of War: Reloaded is a fantastic remaster of a superb game that’s worth its asking price. Although its dated gameplay style and execution hold it back, the game still offers hours of fun and gory entertainment.

Gears of War makes it PlayStation debut with a new remaster of the first game in the series, Gears of War: Reloaded. I'll admit, there is something surreal about seeing Marcus Fenix and Coletrain chainsawing through locusts on a Sony console. However, once the novelty of playing a Gears game on PlayStation wears off, you are quickly reminded that you are still just playing a nearly two-decade-old game with a few visual upgrades over the last time they remastered Gears of War back in 2015 with...

Beneath all of the enhancements, Gears of War: Reloaded is the same ultra-violent adventure starring everyone's favorite group of gruff, foul-mouthed soldiers and their chainsaw-sporting guns. The fact that this previously Xbox-exclusive game is now available on PlayStation for the first time is a clear sign of changing times, but one thing hasn't changed a bit: it's still just as fun mowing through grubs now as it was in 2006.

Taken on its own merits some nineteen years since its original release, Gears of War remains a blast to play, only showing its age in minor ways which do little to detract from what is a seminal piece of work. Though not too far removed from 2015’s Ultimate Edition, the lower price of entry makes this easier to stomach for PlayStation owners tempted to dive into the series that defined a generation of Xbox fans and that few games have bettered in the proceeding years.

We’re back. Your loadout is prepared with power armour, Chainguns and Roadie Runs readied, and Sera is under attack again, but where there was once the reassuring feel of an Xbox controller in your hand, you look down to find a PlayStation 5 DualSense instead. Is this some Locust trick? No, this is gaming in 2025, and while it’s likely proof that the console wars are basically over, Marcus Fenix can never rest, with a new battleground to protect.

In my memory, the Carmine brothers stand out as prominent figures of the original trilogy, but Anthony – who I don't think is ever referred to by his first name in-game – dies quickly and unceremoniously from a Longshot bullet through the head in the campaign's first act. Anthony Carmine's greatest contribution to the game's story is saying, "Are you the Marcus Fenix, the one who fought at Aspho Fields?" It's an interesting tidbit that holds significant meaning for me as a longtime fan familiar with Marcus' backstory, but Aspho Fields is never mentioned again.
