A dazzling, thrilling action-platformer with a potent cocktail of combat and platforming components, all set in one of the most appealing game worlds around. It's not a massive progression from the original, and its sheer relentlessness can prove tiresome, but Guacamelee! 2 is a real celebration of a sequel.

It’s been more than five years since DrinkBox Studios first released Guacamelee!. When it released, the game was a great success, earning stellar reviews from critics. Its story, art, and gameplay were all praised for being fresh and exciting. But again, five years have gone by. The gaming climate is different now. Does Guacamelee! 2 stand as tall as its predecessor? I’m not going to beat around the bush here. The answer is yes.

Guacamelee 2 is a very safe sequel that does little to innovate or surprise, but it's still a solid action-platformer with satisfying combat, tight controls, and an undeniable charm.

We take a trip into the Mexiverse to prevent a mystical guacamole from folding time in on itself. Yeah, things are gonna get weird.

Not once during my playthrough of Guacamelee 2 did I feel bored or look at the clock, and once I was done, I felt compelled to hunt down everything I’d missed. It’s yet another triumph for DrinkBox and they probably have at least one or two more of these in them.

The gorgeous Mexiverse and hotheaded combat and puzzles are entertaining, but overall Guacamelee! 2 lacks the tightness that made its predecessor such a hoot from start to finish. A criticism levelled at the first game was that it was too short, but on the evidence offered here I think the series is better off lean and speedy. There isn’t enough substance to keep you wholeheartedly engaged otherwise.

Guacamelee 2 is another champion-grade Metroidvania, provided you can handle some corny humor and retreading of old mechanics.

When making the sequel to a highly-regarded first title, it can be difficult to decide how to proceed. How much do you change, and can you recapture the magic found in the first instalment? 2013’s Guacamelee!, developed by Drinkbox Studios, set a high bar. It had a blend of engaging platforming and combat challenges, with a lighthearted Mexican aesthetics. However, I can safely state that Guacamelee! 2 meets, and even exceeds, this high standard, delivering a fantastic sequel that fans of...

And Guacamelee! 2 does basically everything else right, and arguably better than a lot of other Metroidvania games on the market. Its core gameplay is tremendous, building off the original and feeling like a true step forward. It boasts sharper visuals, an expanded suite of abilities for Juan, and plenty of content for fans to sink their teeth into. Simply put, Guacamelee! 2 is bigger and better than the first game, and is an absolute must-play for any fans of the Metroidvania genre or the increasingly impressive body of work by the talented people at Drinkbox Studios.

Guacamelee 2 is a hilarious, challenging, and rewarding follow-up to Drinkbox’s original. It expands on the first’s ideas in so many great ways, and marries a complex but understandable set of moves to both its combat and platforming. While a few more additional moves would have been nice, this new adventure offsets some of the saminess with wacky, one-off gameplay experiments that are often a blast to experience. The same can be said for the improvements in its storytelling, which come courtesy of a surprising amount of heart, and referential humor that’s is much more frequently earned and explored rather...

Only a small improvement on the first game but this is still one of the most original Metroidvanias around, in terms of both its setting and its gameplay.

I’m not going to lie, Guacamelee! 2 is easily one of the most fun games I’ve played this year and it’s hard to fault it even at its most infuriatingly challenging moments. The game has incredible presentation, great level design and is just as good whether playing solo or in co-op. If you’re looking for a light hearted Metroidvania or 2D platformer to play on the PS4, then you need Guacamelee! 2 in you life.

After releasing a couple previous games, Guacamelee! catapulted DrinkBox Studios to the top echelon of indie developers. Just over five years since its release, we finally have a long-awaited sequel so how does it compare to the fantastic original?

The first Guacamelee didn’t demand a sequel. It told a succinct and satisfying story, and fully explored its mechanics while nailing the Metroid style of exploration. Guacamelee 2 doesn’t radically change the gameplay established by the first game, but with myriad combat and platforming improvements, a worthwhile story, and better challenges, this is the follow-up I didn’t know I wanted.

If you enjoyed the original Guacamelee!, this sequel is an absolute must. It’s not going to particularly surprise you in any way, but it’s certainly going to have you grinning from ear to ear as you play. Also, if you liked the original Guacamelee! but found its platforming and bosses a little too hard in the latter stages, you’ll find Guacamelee! 2 to be much more enjoyable. Those who didn’t like Guacamelee!, however, won’t really find anything here to change their minds. Guacamelee! 2 doesn’t reinvent the wheel, it just makes sure it looks prettier while flattening out any bumps.

Those looking for a lengthier Guacamelee story than the original will be disappointed to hear that this story clocks in at well under 10 hours. That's perfectly fine, as it prevents the game's premise from wearing thin. There's also a big challenge ahead in finding everything, which should keep those hailing from the Perfectionist Timeline busy for while.

Guacamelee 2 is a brilliantly made game on the presentation front and its few flaws don't limit its enjoyment.

The appeal of the first Guacamelee was how it combined familiar Metroidvania structure with a unique style and extremely engaging combat. Drinkbox’s sequel doubles down on that with a even crazier story and a longer journey, but it often feels too familiar when it comes to gameplay.

Drinkbox Studios has already made a name for itself on PSN with colourful platformers like Mutant Blobs Attack. Guacamelee suggests a real step-up in terms of ambition, and that's a welcome move - even if it does perhaps come at the cost of a little polish. Like the best luchadores in the business, Guacamelee has real heart and a blazing desire to put on a good show.
