Two words I never thought I would say in the same sentence are “bold” and “Sanrio,” so let’s savour this together. Hello Kitty Island Adventure is a very bold statement from Sanrio. The idea of putting out a game that is so clearly inspired by Animal Crossing would be daunting to most companies, but here we are. Join all of your favourite Hello Kitty characters as they venture to a strange island, set up shop, help out friends, and decorate!

This means that while players could access the same content, eventually, new players were forcibly unable to catch up with day-one players. Since there is no cross-platform play nor cross-save feature, and everyone will be required to start fresh, this won’t be as much of an issue for Switch or PC players if the trend continues, but it's still unclear how this would work alongside the mobile version of the game. Hello Kitty Island Adventure is an incredible, cozy game with great exploration that lets you live with Sanrio's unique characters. I enjoyed the experience of reaching each biome, fishing and catching insects. However, everything was fun and games until I remembered this was a re-release for more platforms. So, the lack of new content was underwhelming.

In a saturated market with games clambering to echo the soul of Animal Crossing, Hello Kitty Island Adventure has finally grabbed that baton and ran with it. It ticks every box in what I want from this genre, chucking every possible game mechanic at the player to play around with so there’s never a dull moment, and probably won't be for quite a while. If any franchise felt like it was already built up for an Animal Crossing-style game, it’s the Sanrio universe. Hello Kitty Island Adventure was an absolute delight to explore with plenty to keep me coming back and seeing what else it had to offer each day.
