Hotline Miami 2 ups the ante in this ultra-violent sequel but ultimately loses a lot in the process. Wrong Number indeed.

Hotline Miami 2 is everything you would expect out of the sequel. It's still as violent as ever before and best of all, it's still incredibly fun. With multiple playable characters, an interesting story, a phenomenal soundtrack, and intense gameplay, I have a feeling that Hotline Miami 2 will be on my top 10 list of games when 2015 comes to a close. Aside from a couple of issues, Hotline Miami 2 is incredibly fun and is a game that shouldn't be missed.

Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number is the type of game that will get your heart racing and test your reflexes at each and every turn. It's late-80s-early 90s-infused world proves that arcade-style gameplay isn't dead -- it just moved.

A decent sequel that pushes Hotline Miami to the limit. However, held back from greatness by a few niggling issues.

Well, apart from its predecessor, and if you played that you’ll know what to expect here: lashings of ultraviolence; frantic, trial and deadly error gameplay and the best soundtrack this side of Los Santos. If you didn’t, the aim is simple: clear each stage of enemies using guns, knives, bats, iron bars and more before you can move on to the next one and do it all again. The difference is, everything in Wrong Number is bigger, tougher and nastier than before.

Want an easy game? When you hit Hotline Miami 2, you called the wrong number. This game is much more difficult than the original and is only for fanatics of this style of play.

Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number is a somewhat flawed masterpiece. Addictive and brutal, it often walks the line between making you feel a sense of accomplishment and disdain. Whilst it goes out of its way to be grander than the original (and on the whole succeeds), its bigger levels and erratic difficulty unfortunately separate it from its predecessor unfavourably. Those with balls of steel and razor sharp wits will find this title immeasurably enjoyable, but those without may be driven to the end of their tether.

When Hotline Miami appeared on the scene in 2012, I was floored. It was brutal, fast-paced, and most importantly, fun. Containing a level of violence and brutality on par with Manhunt, players were instructed by eerie phone calls to go to locations and murder everyone inside. Kill everyone faster and with more variety earned you a higher score. Slip up once and you’re dead. With a storyline almost as confusing as Mullholland Drive to boot, a new cult classic was born.

Although Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number is more narratively ambitious than its prequel, something has been lost in the transition. The levels, while good for the most part, simply do not match up those seen in the original game. Nevertheless, Wrong Number still stands as an excellent closing act for the series all the same.

A hugely disappointing sequel that seems to misunderstand what made the original gameplay great and is tediously self-indulgent when it comes to its story and violence.

But if you're looking for a game that provides a nice challenge, and you don't mind the trippy story, Hotline Miami 2 is a good way to go. In it, I busted through a door, knocked a gunman to the ground, threw glass bottle that killed his partner, bashed the gunman's head in, stole his gun, then killed someone else with it by shooting through a window. Those are moments that make you stand up and take notice. There's definitely a thrill in figuring out how to efficiently complete levels with big combo points. That thrill just happens to be...

Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number is violent and unsettling but still pulls you in like nothing else. Its inherent flaws feel more pronounced the second time around but it's still the 80's grindhouse murder-a-thon you know and love.

Of all the sequels set to release in 2015, there won't be many that expand upon their predecessor quite as much as Wrong Number does. It's a bigger, bolder game than the first — and while that doesn't mean it's better in every respect, it's very satisfying to see a developer push the boundaries of their own creation. Fans of the first game would have been satisfied with more of the same, but this game goes beyond the remit of a simple expansion pack. It's a supremely confident return to the ideas that made Hotline Miami so great, and a...

Hotline Miami 2 may look like its predecessor, but it’s a completely different beast. The original was a drug; a pulsating, hypnotic thing. Hotline Miami 2 consciously makes it slightly harder to get lost in that flow, but trades that trance for a story that I’m still rapturously unpacking. It gives you the tools and freedom you need to execute unbelievable killing combos, and then gives you ample time to consider the consequences. That might be what has made Hotline Miami 2 such an unforgettable experience for me: Between those two halves — the killing and the consequence — I...

Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number is an entertaining game, at least for the majority of its play time. It takes what made Hotline Miami great and made it greater, these being the weapons and level design. It is a much longer experience too, though personal playthrough times will be dependant on your skill. However, Wrong Number also tries to do too much too quickly, and its multiple character paths don’t work as well as hoped. Add in the fact there are fewer masks and it feels like a major part of the game has been stripped out. Overall it doesn’t...

Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number is more of the same, but that’s not a bad thing if that’s all you want out of it. After beating the sequel I was immediately inspired to go back and play the original, which in turn inspired me to start playing Wrong Number again. Between the level editor and the iron-clad gameplay, I’ll be enjoying this franchise for years to come.

Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number is a great game and a worthy sequel. It’s more confident in its style, storytelling ability, and level design than the first game. It has enough depth to stand on its own, but also manages to nail a balanced variety of new and old Hotline Miami goodness for fans who want both.
