In Kunitsu-Gami: Path of The Goddess, you play as Soh, the guardian and protector of the Maiden Yoshiro on her path to cleanse the mountain of corruption. In many ways, Path of the Goddess resembles an elaborate tower defense game with a personal sword-swinging touch. However, it actually has more in common with games such as Pikmin or Overlord.

I’m just a boy, standing in front of an unseen virtual audience, asking them to play Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess. There are hundreds of thousands of video games in the world, and there is nothing out there even a little bit like Capcom’s new action/real-time strategy game. I’m so in love with its innovative, masterfully woven, eye-opening weirdness, and I simply need people to know about it. If you feel AAA games have stagnated in their design, concept, or execution, Capcom has brought down a building-sized hammer on that claim, and that hammer’s name is Kunitsu-Gami.

An action RPG, tower defence hybrid of admirable intent and occasional flashes of brilliance, but is otherwise a very average time.

Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess offers a stunning and memorable aesthetic that matches well with its unusual, but compelling mix of different genres. Capcom has proven why they’re one of the most successful and long-running developers and publishers out there, and that they’re still willing to push the boundaries once in a while.

A tower defense strategy game shouldn’t work as well as this does, even if it’s upgraded with gorgeous graphics and hack-and-slash action. Capcom’s Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess is one of the most surprising and unique games of the year so far for good reasons. Every part of this game, from unlocking and upgrading villager roles, to strategically placing them on the battlefield, and then jumping straight into the fight yourself is engaging and exciting. Even if you aren’t a fan of strategy or action games, this is enough of a blend that it still comes highly recommended.

Kunitsu-Gami is the kind of wonderful, left-field Capcom release we don’t see often these days. Bound to be a cult classic in the future, Path of the Goddess is original and does not lean on any of Capcom’s established properties. Instead, it relies on an admittedly difficult-to-explain but well-executed gameplay loop that I found hard to put down with an art style that is equally challenging to look away from.

With rising development costs and general economic issues that have had a widespread impact on the video game industry, major publishers and developers are not as willing to experiment and launch new IPs as much as they were ten or twenty years ago. Sustained by the massive success of the latest entries in cornerstone franchises like Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, and Street Fighter, CAPCOM seems to be the only major publisher that still takes risks. Following the release of the relatively solid Exoprimal (albeit shortlived) last year, the Japanese publisher is launching another experimental title called Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the...

Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess stands out as a Japanese-inspired single-player Kagura Action strategy game. Set on a defiled mountain, the game was completed in approximately 16 hours, offering a well-balanced experience that blends tower defense and action elements. However, its narrative and genre may leave room for improvement. This game is Capcom’s take on the tower defense genre which was previously mentioned in a hands-on preview.

Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess is a unique strategy experience that draws from traditional Japanese culture to give us an incredibly detailed world to work through, one bite-sized level at a time. The strategy here is tight, the animations and combat look and feel great, and the dancing, music and base-building ensure that there's always something to do in the downtime between Seethe-destroying sorties. Capcom are still on that hot streak, and we are here for it.

An easy-to-grasp premise coupled with a campaign with an abundance of clever twists and turns, Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess stands as one of Capcom's most interesting ventures into smaller-scale experiences yet. A game that doesn't shy away from its smaller stature, yet never feels like it's sacrificing the quality of production we've come to expect and praise Capcom for. Some great artistic use of color and lighting on top, only emboldening further a game that feels miniature yet grand at the same time. The surprise isn't that Capcom can excel just as well on newer, smaller-scale projects. It's that...

Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess is experimental Capcom at its best. While some of the fights can teeter on feeling unfair the majority of the game is a glorious mix of hack-and-slash action with a heavy dose of tower defense. It’s launching directly into Game Pass and is well worth checking out for anyone looking for 14+ hours of a damned good time.
