Last, but certainly not least by any stretch of the imagination, is the photo mode in Spider-Man. The brilliant idea behind the concept is that Peter Parker was a photographer for the Daily Bugle before he became a scientist and was hired by Otto Octavius, so photography and Spider-Man have always gone hand-in-hand in nearly every incarnation of the character. In short, the photo mode is excellent, it’s intuitive and using the filters, frames and stickers you can make some seriously fantast...

Marvel's Spider-Man delivers off the wall combat and a fresh take on the Spider-mythos that should have fans of all stripes pumped. However, if you've already tired of games in the Arkham mold, you'll find little reason to get excited.

Hands down MARVEL Spider-Man is one of the BEST games I have played all year. Within moments of swinging out into the streets of New York I was hooked. From there the game took me on a wild ride that I wished would not stop. Loaded with references to other Spider-Man games, the movies, TV show, Cartoons and of course the comics; MARVEL Spider-Man is the ultimate comic book video game if not 2018 Game of the Year… Fight me!!

Marvel’s Spider-Man has clearly been a labour of love for Insomniac, and each time you play you’ll pick up on the sheer attention to detail they’ve paid to the game. Like the way that if you web a villain to an object you can still then throw that object, with the miscreant still attached. Or that that there’s two sets of dialogue, one for when Spider-Man’s resting and one for when he’s exerting himself.

Despite a few odd pacing and story issues, Spider-Man is one of the best superhero games ever made.

Verdict: Marvel’s Spider-Man excels not only in its narrative and combat but also in its world-building. The ease in which Insomniac Games hands the Spider-Man reins to players and lets them truly feel like the wall-crawling webhead is exceptional and shows the studio’s care and reverence for the character. Spider-Man on PlayStation 4 will surprise you, delight you, and keep you coming back for more.

In an interview with TIME in 2015, Stan Lee revealed that his publisher thought his new creation Spider-Man was the “worst idea he’d ever had”. No one liked spiders, teenagers should only be sidekicks, and no one wanted a hero with real world problems. Fast forward 56 years and Spider-Man, one of the most recognisable super heroes ever, returns to gaming in Marvel’s Spider-Man from Insomniac Games — and gosh does this team know how to do our favourite web slinger right.

Few superhero games have been as widely anticipated as that of Marvel’s Spider-Man in recent years. The best selling comic book hero hasn’t seen his own solo adventure in a few years, having been seen in titles such as Ultimate Alliance and Marvel Heroes but nothing on his own for most of the PS4 generation. Insomniac has already seen success once before with an open-world city and fast traversal in Sunset Overdrive, so are they the perfect studio to pick up the superhero mantle and try their hand at making a new game based on Marvel’s Spider-Man?

Marvel's Spider-Man is a complete package that near-flawlessly combines elements of the RPG world with the thrilling combat of an action-driven experience. Whether you're a hardcore spidey fan or just like to dabble in spandex, Marvel's Spider-Man is, in a word, amazing.

Marvel’s Spider-Man does a spectacular job of making you feel like the ultimate Spider-Man. From swinging through the city at high speed to fighting off legions of enemies by zipping between them and pulling them into the air, its gameplay looks like a scene from the films. It’s remarkably well realised in terms of its world, design, and even technically, with short loading times and a rock solid framerate even on the base PlayStation 4. If Spider-Man is your thing then this is an essential purchase.

Dangling outside Peter Parker’s New York City apartment, the arachnid looks menacing enough to be the radioactive bug that bites him, spawning his path to superhero stardom. The game immediately kicks this notion in the face, however, forgoing the origin story slog in favour of allowing players to feel like Spider-Man from the get-go.

Comic books and video games go together like chocolate and peanut butter. Now that Insomniac Games got their hands on the iconic Spider-Man franchise, does their interpretation of Spidey's world live up to its legacy?

Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man is a triumph of superheroes and storytelling. Within a beautifully realized version of New York City, Spider-Man soars across the skyline with awe-inspiring grace, ducking into darkened alleys to pummel criminals in spectacular ways. The wall-crawler is front and center for most of this journey – spitting out quips and making a flashy show of heroism – but his mask frequently comes off to focus on Peter Parker’s struggles with relationships and the unpredictability of life.

There are three reasons why Marvel's Spider-Man feels important. First, it offers a chance at some form of redemption for Sony, after The Amazing Spider-Man movies turned out to be, well, not all that amazing. Second, since Batman: Arkham Knight brought that incredible franchise to a close, we're sorely lacking a super hero fix. Third, and most importantly, there simply hasn't been a good Spider-Man game since 2004's Spider-Man 2, and that's criminal.

Whether it was it’s opening cinematics that are just so typically Spider-Man, or when it showed the group of 20 goons I just dispatched seamlessly without taking a hit, tied up in a giant web ball hanging off the side of the building, while Spidey comically remarks about saving them from inevitable jail time, there were just so many times where Marvel’s Spider-Man left me so charmed and enthralled. Spider-Man is a beloved franchise to many, and Insomniac Games has delivered a near-perfect, immersive, and cinematic experience that does everyone’s favorite neighborhood hero justice.

That compulsion to do the next thing and continue to experience this world ultimately sums up Spider-Man’s experience as a whole. From the story to the exploration to the combat to seemingly endless upgrades, Spider-Man is packed full of things worth doing and that are fun to do. Insomniac Games has made it seem effortless with the way they can bring this character to life in all the ways a video game can. Spider-Man is a great superhero game, a great PS4 exclusive, but most importantly a great game all its own.

Marvel's Spider-Man is at once a fantastic action game, a dramatic story-driven adventure, and a love letter to fans of Marvel's ever-endearing wall-crawler. It's also one of the strongest titles in Insomniac Games' catalog, and will no doubt be counted not only among the best games of 2018, but also among the best PlayStation 4 exclusives ever released.
