NBA 2K24 features revamped gameplay through ProPLAY and small game mode tweaks that make it a worthwhile upgrade. Not everything is perfect, and there is still so much room for growth in future games, but NBA 2K24 is a promising step forward in a franchise that has been complacent in recent years without any real competition.

NBA 2K24 showcases a franchise in need of going back to the fundamentals. Its clumsy implementation of VC is nothing new, but it's now actively hampering the rest of the game - especially given the disappointment of MyCareer.

NBA 2K24 is the same game more or less than its many predecessors, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The gameplay remains solid with an emphasis on shooting, so it may take a bit to get used to the more delicate mechanics. The City is full of activities that you should not overlook and can be quick and easy ways to improve your player. MyNBA allows you to take control of a franchise in five different eras and new RPG elements add a layer to the general manager component. While NBA 2K24 does have a “pay to win” aspect...

NBA 2K24 is the latest in a long line of NBA2K games. Yearly sports games can be hit and miss, without a lot of difference from the previous year’s game. There are new features like ProPlay, an immersion ruining but new story in MyCAREER mode, heading ‘In Pursuit of Greatness’ in The W, reliving some of Kobe Bryant’s greatest MAMBA MOMENTS, and recreating or changing history in MyNBA. Even with these differences from the last game, this year’s NBA game is still in basketball terms: ...

NBA 2k24 provides a stellar game of on-the-court basketball. Its main issues haven’t changed in years: clumsy storytelling and some of the worst microtransactions in the business. At this point, everybody knows about them, and you have to make your peace with them or not. As somebody who despises them, I was enjoying my time in the career mode despite feeling like I could barely make progress unless I spent actual money. Online play is also a ton of fun, but it can be tough to keep up with the sheer number of players who don’t mind dropping significant cash...

With its 25th anniversary, NBA 2K24 is back for another year of hoops with cover athletes Kobe Bryant and Sabrina Ionescu. Having played the 2K series for roughly 15 of those years, I’ve watched as the series grew and changed over the course of three console generations. While much has changed, one thing has remained constant. NBA 2K is still the king of the court when it comes to basketball video games.

We’re back with yet another yearly iteration of NBA 2K, the poster child of the statement “if you don’t have to compete, you don’t have to try”. What was once a true juggernaut of a sports franchise, back when (the admittedly better) EA’s NBA Live still existed, is now the sole choice for those looking for a basketball simulator. Given the franchise’s monopoly, 2K was able to go nuts with pricing methods, microtransactions, and the like. Every now and then, a new mode or extra f...

Visual Concepts continues to provide the most authentic simulation in sports gaming, but the in-game economy is on a fast break to the bottom.

In NBA 2K24, some thoughtful additions to gameplay visuals and mechanics get deeply overshadowed by some minute growing pains with ProPlay, some major hurtles dodging gacha pop-ups, and plenty presentation hindrances that keep you from playing the actual game. Behind all that is still a fantastic basketball game, even if it doesn't feel different enough from last year to merit a must-buy status, even for basketball fans.

Last year’s NBA 2K23 was a true championship-worthy basketball game, offering up rewarding on-court action, a refined career mode, and a variety of nostalgia-tweaking content (like the returning Jordan Challenge) that wasn’t necessarily focused on nickel-and-diming players. In other words, this year’s NBA 2K24 was provided with a very solid foundation to build upon.

NBA 2K24 shows that there is a bigger problem with gaming today. While you can get a good game out there if you decide to make it into a “games as a service” model with the main goal being purchased over skill, the game itself gets lost under an avalanche of hate because of corporate greed. NBA 2K24 is the game that shows this to be true. As a game, NBA 2K24 is the same great game it always is, but the hard push for you to open your wallet hurt the game too much overall… And Michael Jordan is...

NBA 2K24 has made several noteworthy improvements, like its addition of ProPLAY, which amps up the realism, and a modern approach to the game's presentation that makes it feel fresh. However, it's disappointing that the otherwise fantastic simulation experience is marred by the game's microtransactions, transforming it into a pay-to-win model. Unless you are a basketball enthusiast who wants to collect every title in the NBA 2K series, it's best to skip NBA 2K24.

Visual Concepts came to an important but necessary conclusion with NBA 2K24: it needed to dial back the superfluous aspects of the series back. For the past two years, on PS5 specifically, the release’s popular MyCAREER mode has wanted to touch upon all aspects of basketball – including the cultural stuff, like fashion and music. This year’s game, however, is focused fully on the court, and as a solo experience it’s all the better for it.

Here's the thing about video games and microtransactions: they're probably going to be intertwined forever. That will always be a major issue. Not from a personal 'I have a problem with spending' standpoint, I should say. More from a general 'This doesn't feel right at all' one, though. The biggest problem is that they're central to everything you can attempt to achieve.

Regardless of what this review says, NBA 2K24 will sell millions of copies, and generate millions of dollars through VC. That is because basketball fans who want to play a basketball game have nowhere else to go. The on court action is really good, but without competition to keep them honest, 2K's monetisation has got out of hand and made modes like MyCareer near unplayable without extra investment from players.

PC players are rightfully angry that they’re still stuck behind current-gen consoles. Despite offering some fun matches, NBA 2K24 does plenty enough to deserve its mediocre rating.

After the large strides last year, the minimal announcements for updates to this year's game raised a red flag. Adding the LeBron Era makes sense, and I wouldn't be surprised if next year's game will add LeBron Moments. Mamba Moments are once again great, as 2K and Visual Concepts once again perfectly hit the target with these types of modes, whether it be NBA or WWE. The rest of the game feels largely unchanged outside of a simplified City for MyCAREER (outside of the additional non-basketball quests). The shooting and gameplay have added more frustration this year, but the paint...

NBA 2K24 is mechanically sound, but microtransactions keep it from being the best it could be.

NBA 2K24 offers an extremely polished experience, given its unrivaled on-court feel and a few welcome additions, but questionable decisions and an uncanny push toward microtransactions hurt what could otherwise be considered a natural step forward for the franchise.

NBA 2K24 should have been the perfect platform to celebrate Kobe Bryant's career and his ever-lasting influence on the game of basketball. Instead, his legacy gets overshadowed by omnipresent microtransactions and stale game modes. As a result, NBA 2K24 feels like a dull, lopsided blowout as opposed to a memorable, adrenaline-inducing affair like the ones the Black Mamba often blessed us with throughout his career.
