One Piece World Seeker is a wonderful journey for the Straw Hat Crew that can be enjoyed pretty nicely on the Steam Deck with minimal setting changes!

At first glance, One Piece: World Seeker looks like a winner. An open world title with great graphics, a brand new storyline, and featuring the entire cast from the anime. After an abysmal VR title released last year, World Seeker had everything to become the piece of vindication One Piece fans deserved, but I’m disappointed to inform you that this game doesn’t quite cut the mustard.

One Piece: World Seeker tells a surprisingly well-realized story that fans of the series are sure to enjoy, but only if they can make it through repetitive and frustrating gameplay. The talented voice cast and bright, popping visuals are a treat, but it does little to revolutionize the open-world adventure genre. If you aren’t a fan of the source material, World Seeker is hard to recommend, but lovers of the Straw Hat pirates will find an enjoyable story buried under a lot of mundane gameplay.

Luffy's charm really helps sell this game, with the open world being quite beautiful at times. But some issues with the combat, lack of Straw Hats interacting with the world, and the lock on system being a pain during some fights gives this enough flaws that some folks might not be able to ignore.

We want to emphasize that 5 will always be the “average” number, not 7. So by far, it’s 50% great and it’s also 50% bad.

One Piece: World Seeker features both the looks and a story worthy of fitting in with the original story but be prepared for a simplistic fighting style and an open world with little to do.

Being a huge fan of Eiichiro Oda’s manga One Piece, I was super excited to get my hands on Bandai Namco’s latest game project, One Piece: World Seeker. Touted as being an open world role playing game with an original story penned by the celebrated author, Oda, as well as receiving artistic input from Toei Animation crew members – how could I not get excited? The one question I had to ask however: is One Piece: World Seeker a successful game, or just another anime themed release with too...

World Seeker does a great job of setting up an exciting One Piece story. The Straw Hat Pirates land at an island that the Navy has complete control of, and Luffy, the captain, instantly starts making trouble and fighting with the local Navy captain, who is in control with a legion of unique technology, including robot drone fighters.

One Piece fans will be able to overlook World Seeker's issues, but those not as big on the series won't miss much by skipping this title.

Fans of the One Piece anime and manga will probably find more to enjoy in the World Seeker experience than most gamers. Once you get past the pretty surface, you’ll find that there isn’t much below it. The story is middling, lacking the excitement and action you would expect from a property like One Piece. A small handful of intriguing characters along with some fun unlockable abilities were the sole highlights of my playthrough, but weren't enough to make up for the game's many shortcomings otherwise. Ultimately, One Piece World Seeker serves as a rather mediocre adaptation of a property that has the potential to be so much more.

Even as fun as it can be zipping around the island with Luffy's outstretched arms, the numerous issues start to bubble up very quickly and they make One Piece: World Seeker start to feel very monotonous and lackluster way too early into the game.

One Piece: World Seeker isn’t the most inventive open world game out there. It’s not the biggest or the most varied in terms of mission design and structure. But it is a delight to play, thanks in part to its wonderful characters, well-written story and absolutely stunning-looking world. It’s just a shame that world doesn’t feel more lived in, and the missions on offer don’t allow Luffy a bit more variety in his tasks. Still, whether you’re a fan of One Piece or just enjoy an open world game to get lost in, One Piece: World Seeker is worth your time. Even if it’s just to catapult Luffy through the air by his arms. It never gets old.

A game that doesn't stretch itself too thin trying to re-invent the open world genre, and in doing so creates a solid gaming experience.

The visuals in World Seeker are completely fine. The cel-shaded style compliments Eiichiro Oda’s iconic artstyle quite well, and the special attacks and super moves all look as flashy as they do in One Piece. The orchestral music is great as well, as is the always-stellar voice-acting. I do wish there was more voice acting, as a fair amount of cutscenes are text-only with a couple words played over it to express the character’s mood.

Every once in a while, an anime game comes out that does right by its source material. One Piece: World Seeker is one such game, delivering engaging gameplay and a solid story that make up for almost all of its weaker design elements.

While fans can likely find enjoyment in spending time with the One Piece crew, there are far better open world adventures out there.

A loving piece of fan service that looks and sounds just like the anime, but unfortunately it plays like a bad Xbox 360 era open world game.

What the heck happened to One Piece: World Seeker? Was the developer short on time? Short on budget? Or was it just an awful idea to make an open world setting your one and only gimmick in 2019? We would genuinely love to know, because the game feels completely unfinished in almost every possible way. Even for the relatively low standards of anime-based action titles the game's bad, but compared to any half-decent open world game released this generation, it's a disaster.

Despite a ton of initial promise and flash, One Piece: World Seeker fails both as a One Piece game and an engaging open world experience.

One Piece: World Seeker could have been so much more that it is. While many of its elements were executed rather well and are still very enjoyable, many others feel uninspired and generic. Hopefully, Bandai Namco and Ganbarion learn from this first attempt at an open-world One Piece game and are able to improve on it in the future, as World Seeker has made it clear that One Piece would work very well as a large-scale open-world game.

March 14, 2019 Read Review

World Seeker looks the part of a breakout single-player One Piece game, but its many problems become apparent almost immediately after picking up the controller. Repetitive combat, cumbersome movement controls, and a few outstandingly bad missions get in the way of what otherwise would have been a very respectable One Piece story. Quite simply, One Piece deserves better.

The Shonen Jump brand has been riding high lately. Dragon Ball FighterZ has drawn an audience rivaling Street Fighter, the likes of My Hero Academia and One Punch Man have lit up the world of mainstream anime in the west, and the iconic magazine has relaunched into a digital subscription service that rivals Netflix in terms of value. Unfortunately, Jump Force, the fighting crossover dream match machine that was supposed to ring in the big 50th anniversary, landed like somebody dropped a toilet out of an airplane. One Piece: World Seeker is in the unfortunate position to follow that up, but it just so happens to be the work of Ganbarion, a studio that knows its way around One Piece. This game not only feels like the current end point of one idea’s long journey, but it’s also easily the best game based on Shonen Jump’s biggest property.

Although it's filled with annoying moments World Seeker is more fun than frustration. There are some rookie issues with it but the exploration still absolutely makes the game what it is.

There have been more than a few One Piece games over the years so let's see how Luffy's first open world adventure holds up.

Over the past 18 years, the anime/manga One Piece has received myriad video games across numerous genres. Among all those adaptations, World Seeker represents what is easily its most ambitious attempt to emulate what it might be like to be Luffy and be part of his Straw Hat crew. World Seeker may lack the detail and technical prowess of its open-world peers, but it delivers fun combat and exploration in an open environment with an enjoyable story to pull you along through the whole journey.

Fans of Monkey D. Luffy and the rest of the Straw Hat Crew will undoubtedly find something to like in World Seeker, but that doesn't hide the game's poor mission structure, the lack of variety and overall dullness. This ship's sunk.
