Is Phantom Blade Zero an epic journey through the world of kungfupunk, or is this another overly ambitious project?
Phantom Blade Zero is a labour of love and one of the best action RPGs we've played in years.
Phantom Blade Zero brings players into the dark, wuxia-inspired world of the Wulin. With blisteringly fast, fluid kung fu combat and gorgeous presentation, it forcefully establishes itself as a distinctly excellent, remarkable action RPG.
Phantom Blade Zero doesn't define itself as a 'Soulslike,' and rightly so, as its number of bosses doesn't compare to that genre. Instead, it leans towards character action and RPG elements in weapon enhancement and Spectral Blades, tied to sub-bosses and major—or optional—bosses that sometimes become progress blocks if their weaknesses aren't addressed. A fitting atmosphere and expansive maps to explore make it an ideal title if you're looking for dozens of hours of gameplay and considerable skill challenges.
Phantom Blade Zero, S-Game's first AAA title, impresses with its innovative animations, spectacular combat and original setting.
Phantom Blade Zero is the latest action game on the stage, and George is here with our review of S-GAME's upcoming title.
Phantom Blade Zero is a spectacularly satisfying action game that rewards precise combat and experimentation of its extensive arsenal. Its ‘Kungfupunk’ world and dance-like martial arts choreography make a strong impression, but convoluted storytelling and some frustrating navigation, as well as a confused soundtrack, holds it short of becoming a legend in its art.
S-Game has crafted some of the fastest, most engaging combat of any action game, even if it’s light elsewhere…

Phantom Blade Zero achieves its goal of creating wonderfully fluid and cinematic kung fu-style combat - but balance and quality issues ultimately dim its shine.
One of the most anticipated action games of the year mixes Chinese Wuxia action with stunning graphics and some very odd story elements, but is it a Soulslike or not?
