When it comes to pure fan service, there won’t be many better this year than Return to Monkey Island. It feels like the true sequel to LeChuck’s Revenge and it feels as though its clever, self-referential wit is a product of Gilbert’s return. As sad and nostalgic as parts of Guybrush’s newest tale can be, I had a wonderful time revisiting familiar people and places in yet another golden-age adventure.

Guybrush’s new adventure is every bit as fun as his previous ones. This is a triumph of a game that manages to live up to exorbitant amounts of expectation and ticks every box.

At the end of the day, there were always some risks involved with Return to Monkey Island, and opinions are going to be divided among the hardcore fans and relative newcomers. What cannot be denied, however, is that this is an amazing point-and-click adventure that retains much of the beloved charm, while still updating the experience to be a more well-balanced affair. This is an excellent return, to say the least, and I can only hope this is the beginning of a new age that Terrible Toybox will be leading from the front.

Often, belated sequels carry a weight of expectation that's hard to live up to. Return to Monkey Island has no such difficulties, Ron Gilbert and Dave Grossman going back to a series they quite clearly still love, and, you’ll love too.

Though I still remain surprised that Return to Monkey Island even exists, I can't contest what Ron Gilbert and developer Terrible Toybox have wrought here. By masterfully combining the witty and thoughtful point and click escapades of the series past with a newfound warmth and charming aesthetic, Return to Monkey Island is by and large the series return that fans have long been waiting for and is a roaring success in the process.

Performance-wise on PC, it’s extremely stable and I had zero bugs or issues. You’re given a large number of save slots to use and loading is extremely fast, in the milliseconds every time. I’d say my only issue with the game is the large amount of backtracking you need to do, though I know that’s a staple of the genre, and how a few of the puzzle solutions felt off compared to most.

Return to Monkey Island is a heartfelt and nostalgic return to a point-and-click adventure series that had long been left behind. It's fun, smart, and intuitive, with a story and presentation that is surprisingly self-aware. Whether this is your first brush with Guybrush Threepwood or your sixth, Return to Monkey Island is a swashbuckling adventure you won't want to miss.

The bigger point of contention is the game's ending. There's no two ways about it, you will either love it or hate it. For a game that is as presented as putting a full stop on the series, this is a big deal. You may well enjoy the entire game up until the final 10 minutes sours you on the whole thing. That is a lot to ask of a player, and while I won't spoil it here, I do like it, however it very much feels out of nowhere.

Return to Monkey Island is pretty much as perfect a sequel to such a series of classic games as one can get. The puzzles are just as clever as they were decades ago, the visuals are the stunning, characters both new and old are a joy to interact with and provide great humor, and the story is not only well-crafted, but also has surprisingly profound moments. It's easily a classic that can proudly stand alongside the other Monkey Island games, and one of the year's best games in general. Take it from a now-behind-bars Stan: it's one worth picking up.

Return to Monkey Island is an enjoyable game that I will definitely be telling my nephews and niece to play. It left me wanting more and now that the introduction is over, the next installment should provide the story progression that I was hoping for with this one. If nothing else this game will serve as a reminder to never say never. Ordinarily when a small company is bought out by a multibillion dollar conglomerate it usually goes quietly into the night never to be heard from again. The fact that this game was made at all is a truly...

With all the wit and charm that you would expect from Gilbert and Grossman's writing, Return to Monkey Island is a decades-long reverie made reality and absolutely essential for fans of the series.

Between the moment Guybrush uttered this iconic line in Return to Monkey Island and our reintroduction to familiar characters like used ship salesman Stan S. Stanman and Cobb, with his "Ask me about Loom" badge, I was already shrouded in a haze of nostalgia. And you would be eating all these up, too, if you're a Monkey Island fan. The thing about Monkey Island enthusiasts is that we can talk your ears off about what makes the series so unique. It's the earnest naivety of its pirate hero Guybrush Threepwood and the series' whimsical and self-referential humor. But most of...

Good ol’ Guybrush Threepwood has been sailing choppy seas for a while now. Following those back-to-back early-90s classics The Secret of Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge, series masterminds Ron Gilbert and Dave Grossman weighed anchor and left LucasArts. The franchise continued with The Curse of Monkey Island and Escape from Monkey Island from new creative teams, both of which have their merits, but felt just slightly off the mark. Then came the episodic Tales of Monkey Island from Telltale Games, which suffered from an obvious low budget and the questionable decision to tether the series to Nintendo’s...

It’s been a long time coming, but Return to Monkey Island is an absolute treat for fans of the series. It looks wonderful, it sounds wonderful, and its combination of excellent puzzles and expert writing will keep you transfixed from start to finish. Our only real complaint is that newcomers may find this a difficult starting point – but that’s easily rectified by jumping into the originals.

Return to Monkey Island reaches into your heart, rips out your desire to know THE SECRET, and clenches it in front of your face. As hard as it would be to concede that The Secret of Monkey Island™ might always have been a MacGuffin, it’s agonising to contemplate that your 30-year longing for the Monkey Island 3 might be just the same. Delighting as you tremor, Return presents to your transfixed gaze a phenomenal point-and-click adventure, bubbling with passion and fun. All the way through, you will hope, achingly, that the big reveal is coming – and then…

One of my very first memories of computer gaming is of the Monkey Island series. It was my introduction to the series (I wasn’t yet born when MI1 or MI2 were released), and though I was too young to complete it without help from my parents, I nonetheless fell in love with it. I owe some of my fondest memories to Monkey Island, and even some of my oldest friends. But no matter how excited I am to finally play the next game in the series, I imagine its co-creator Ron Gilbert is even more exci...

Return to Monkey Island is a delight the likes of which may never been seen again. More than three decades after The Secret of Monkey Island (1990) and Monkey Island 2 LeChuck’s Revenge (1991), series creator Ron Gilbert has returned alongside Dave Grossman to conclude the trilogy – and done it with purpose.

LucasArts had a hell of a run in the late 80s and 90s, creating some of the most memorable point-and-click adventures to grace our PCs. Back then it was a battle for dominance between LucasArts and Sierra, at least in terms of the point-and-click adventure market. Sierra found huge success with their King’s Quest and Space Quest titles, while LucasArts gave us hits like the Indiana Jones series, Sam & Max Hit the Road, and Grim Fandango. Arguably, the crowning achievement in Lucas Arts’ l...
