Scott Pilgrim EX is a fun game to play. It has a good-sized roster and variety in the characters’ movesets. It has some compromises in making it a Metroidvania map system, but it does make it a different experience in the genre.

Scott Pilgrim EX is a great beat-em-up and entry in the Scott Pilgrim series. The narrative and presentation does a great job at paying tribute to other entries in the series, while the gameplay manages to be thrilling from beginning to end, thanks to a great world and satisfying combat. While the short length and small roster may make you question the $28.99 price point, if you're a fan of either Scott Pilgrim or beat-em-up games, then this is a must-buy.

Looking back once more on Scott Pilgrim vs The World: The Game, it's still incredible how it managed to deliver a great beat 'em up experience within the confines of its property. Scott Pilgrim EX can be fun, but it lacks that additional level of oomph that could see it stand side by side with the original, and that's without getting into all the ways it simply falls short as a video game. It may have served genre fans well ten years ago, but compared to some of the greats of today, like Absolum and even Tribute Games' own Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge, it aspires to be simply good rather than outright incredible.

You probably already know if this is a game for you. If you enjoyed Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game back in the day, you'll absolutely love Scott Pilgrim EX, as it's simply a new and improved version of that same idea.

Toronto’s back under siege in Scott Pilgrim EX: robots, demons, rogue gangs, and... well yes, vegans that are terrifyingly strong. Smash, combo, and chaos your way through pixel-perfect battles with Scott, Ramona, and the gang.

I loved the original Scott Pilgrim graphic novels by comic book author and artist Bryan Lee O’Malley. Quirky, charming, funny, and surprisingly insightful on the human condition, I think I devoured the entire series on a rainy Sunday afternoon. Clearly a love-letter to video game culture, the fisticuff-filled (mis)adventures of Scott, Ramona and her seven evil exes made for a great side-scrolling beat ‘em up, Ubisoft’s Scott Pilgrim VS The World: The Game; released in 2010 and then re-released on all the main consoles of the last generation. Now, it’s the turn of nostalgia-fuelled side-scrolling beat ‘em up legends Tribute Games to have a go with the Scott Pilgrim licence. Having played both of Tribute’s previous games – TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge and Marvel Cosmic Invasion – and liked them both to varying degrees, I was excited to see what they could do with a world as rich and fun-filled as Scott Pilgrim.

A neon-soaked, pixel-perfect evolution, Scott Pilgrim EX thrives on Tribute Games’ fluid combat and a stellar Anamanaguchi score.

Scott Pilgrim EX is a wild ride that’s taking a new approach to how we play through beat ’em ups. The roster of fighters stands out as one of the best in recent memory and provides a ton of great variety, while the wild and wacky depiction of Toronto and alternate dimensions looks fantastic!

Scott Pilgrim is back, and this time he needs to work with his enemies to save the world. Scott Pilgrim EX looks great, has a wonderful soundtrack and is a joy to play thanks to its enjoyable combat. It's just a shame it has no modes beyond its main adventure.

Scott Pilgrim is a franchise that just keeps on going across different media. Starting as a graphic novel, the series spawned a cult-classic movie, a well-received video game that was once delisted and later revived in a remaster, and an animated reimagining titled Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. While that latter series has seemingly been canceled,

Scott Pilgrim EX is just a really dumb, fun adventure through the streets of Toronto. Though it has some hiccups, you fall in lesbians with its combat, art direction, and writing.

Scott Pilgrim EX represents a reunion of sorts for developer Tribute Games. Members of the team worked on 2010’s Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game at Ubisoft and later formed the current studio that developed the well-regarded Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge and Marvel Cosmic Invasion. Tribute has become skilled at creating visually nostalgic beat ‘em ups, and its return to the Scott Pilgrim franchise is no exception. It is, however, light on surprises or mechanical i...

Visually, EX is a lot of fun to look at. From the pixel art and his highly detailed, expressive animation work breathes life into every frame. The warped version of Toronto allows for surreal environmental details and a mountain of visual Easter eggs. Matching this visual feast is a brand-new soundtrack by Anamanaguchi. Their explosive blend of 8-bit style and rock soundtrack is just as infectious as their 2010 score. Scott Pilgrim really never disappoints in the music department.

Scott Pilgrim EX takes the beloved franchise into new pixelated heights, offering fans of the 2010 original a worthy sequel to jump into, Mario-style.

Scott Pilgrim EX is an incredible adventure that perfectly captures the comic's Toronto setting through dynamic, action-packed gameplay for fans and newcomers alike.

Scott Pilgrim EX takes a different approach than the previous Scott Pilgrim beat-em-up, which works in some ways and feels a bit stiff in others. Despite the slightly wonky format, the aesthetic and gameplay are excellent, and there are lots of fun nods for fans of the source material to eat up in this tight title.

In Scott Pilgrim EX, you can truly feel the care that the developers at Tribute Games poured into every character, scenario, enemy, and boss. It is a sequel that respects its roots while remaining unafraid to evolve, representing a massive leap forward compared to the first title. It perfectly blends everything a high-quality beat ‘em up needs with the franchise’s signature nerdy humor. It is an unexpected and extremely fun way to expand Bryan Lee O’Malley’s universe, being literally impossible not to laugh throughout the journey or to have a blast with its nonsensical plots and over-the-top bosses. Ultimately, it is the perfect kind of beat ‘em up for a pizza night with friends – and this one even comes with a bit of extra spice to make things even more interesting. The only major downside is that its main story is too short, and I finished it wanting even more!

It’s been fifteen years since Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game released, and a cool five since I published my review of the repackaged Complete Edition. As the first proper video game sequel, Tribute Games’ Scott Pilgrim EX is in a unique position, essentially using a throwback genre to court a completely different generation into the Bob-omb fold. Easy to pick up and play, and packed with cool new characters, Scott Pilgrim EX’s peppy pixelated visuals and impressive hero roster should be a home run, but it lacks depth, challenge, and any significant hooks to keep playing past the short route to credits.

Scott Pilgrim EX is a palatable fresh helping of retro beatdown goodness, but it's too brief and easygoing to deliver more fun than its inspirations or its best contemporaries.

I’ve been to Canada only a handful of times, and I’m a little fuzzy on how things are up there. Thankfully, Bryan Lee O’Malley’s Scott Pilgrim is there to remind me on the semi-regular. It’s a whimsical place of comically unfortunate relationships, continuous battles, never-ending retro nostalgia, chiptune-infused rock music, colorful alternate dimensions, and cooperative hijinks.
