The Amazing Spider-Man Reviews

Professional reviews from gaming critics

Created as an epilogue story occurring entirely after the events of the movie, The Amazing Spider-Man features the return of free-roaming web-slinging all over the city, as the newly anointed Spider-Man is plunged into an all-new storyline charged with protecting Manhattan from a variety of criminals.

Still, swinging through Manhattan as Spider-Man is a blast, and Web Rush is a great mechanic that begs further use. Yes, The Amazing Spider-Man is derivative and graphically underwhelming, but it's also breezily playable and cheerfully entertaining. It may be nothing more than a movie tie-in game, but The Amazing Spider-Man is a good movie tie-in game, and worth a look even by players who aren't fans of the film.

Cast your minds back to 2012. You may remember seeing The Amazing Spider-Man reboot at the movies, and you may even recall playing Beenox’s anticipated PlayStation 3 tie-in on your beloved console – but you probably won’t remember booting it up on your PlayStation Vita. That’s because someone at publisher Activision forgot about the portable version, only recognising their mistake a whopping 16 months later. So, with the theatrical release of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 on the horizon, should this devilishly overdue port set your superhero senses tingling?

Lastly, to make a personal note on the silliness of the game's plot - I found it extremely off-putting that both Gwen Stacey and Doctor Connors repeatedly call Spider-Man by his real name in heavily populated areas, often when he's within immediate earshot of news reporter Whitney Chang, one of the game's new characters. Do secret identities mean nothing to the supporting cast, or does Peter Parker simply not care to shush them? It's no wonder the villains all figure it out so quickly!

The story’s fairly competent and ties into the film well, but the lack of Andrew Garfield or even a remote sound-alike ruins its chances of feeling like the movie it’s supposed to tie in to. It’s more like a cartoon, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing but the No. 1 goal of a movie tie-in is to at least feel like you’re part of the movie. I never did, despite having the entire plot of the movie spoiled. There are moments of fun to be had in Amazing Spider-Man, and in general it’s ...

Any kind of introduction to Spider-Man would be sort of pointless at this stage, considering he's turned up in more games than pretty much anyone barring Mario at this point. That’s not even mentioning the movies, books, comic books (well, obviously), mugs, toys and T-shirts that are probably scattered around your house or adorning your toned physique as we speak. Spidey is pretty much everywhere, but that didn’t stop a few eyebrows being raised when the series was given a movie reboot so...
