Van Helsing and Lady Katarina have been out to paint the town red. Although the hardware stores were closed, a substitute source of the colour was in plentiful supply.

The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing is no second coming of Diablo II, but it's a fun, funny action-RPG with occasional glimmers of innovation. Sure, it's fairly derivative overall, simplistic compared to genre kingpins, and weak in the co-op department, but obvious care went into its craft. Miraculously miniscule price tag or not, Van Helsing is a damn (and probably damned) solid game.

The real question is whether the game is best played on the Xbox One. Given that it's missing some content included in the Final Cut version released for the PC, that might not be the case, especially since personal preference might swing towards mouse and keyboard controls. The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing is a little more uninteresting than the title may lead some to believe. Power-ups add a bit of activity to the otherwise boring combat, though the game prefers piling up the sheer number of enemies instead of providing interesting ones. A forgetful story, performance issues, and an unexplained tower defense element hold Van Helsing back from living up to its true potential, and what’s left meanders the line between standard and boring.

What The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing may lack in replayability it makes up for in competence, enthusiasm and easy charm. If you’re sick of Path of Exile’s grind, or tired of poring over auction house entries in Diablo III, The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing offers you a more immediate option – to step into the shoes (and hat) of the rogui...

The game utilizes the combat in a variety of ways, ensuring players are enthralled every step of the way. Unlike other ARPG titles The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing throws players into the deep end almost instantly. There's never an easy fight and you can literally get bombarded by 20-30 enemies at once. Again the game manages to avoid the monotonous stereotype by adding unique enemies within the pack, laying out buffs and acting as the primary target in the group.
