A great tennis sim with no modes to play them in makes Top Spin a mixed bag.

TopSpin 2K25 is a franchise revival done right. The beloved tennis simulator has never played this well, and the commitment to authenticity will delight fans. However, the career mode is a grind, and online play lacks staying power.

If you've been yearning for the fun of Top Spin 4 and wishing something would scratch that tennis gaming itch, TopSpin 2K25 is exactly what you need. Settle in for some lessons with John McEnroe, work on your timing, and smash your way all the way to international stardom. The match isn't over for TopSpin, but they've delivered a power serve to bring this franchise back to life and get it on the right track.

Top Spin 2K25 gets the fundamentals right with fun tennis gameplay but the rest of the barebones package doesn't reach the previous highs of the franchise.

A well constructed tennis game that takes practise to get the hang of, with neat role-playing style player upgrades and a season-based structure that helps prevent monotony.

From slow career progress to not being able to easily play against friends online, TopSpin 2K25 has its issues, but it's still the best tennis game currently available.

In the heyday of the tennis-sim video game genre, Top Spin and Virtua Tennis were the best players in the crowded space. However, in the time since the genre’s boom settled, the offerings have fallen off considerably, with both franchises going more than a decade without a new release. TopSpin 2K25 signals the reemergence of the critically acclaimed series, and though it’s been a while since it stepped on the court, it’s evident the franchise hasn’t lost its stroke.

Even when I'm not playing TopSpin 2K25, I'm thinking about playing TopSpin 2K25. I'm obsessed with its gameplay, despite its online play being held back by some inconsistencies. TopSpin is a clear contender for the best sports game of 2024.

TopSpin 2K25 is a decent return to form for the franchise, especially when you stick to the more casual side of things. Trying to get better at the game, however, can be fraught with frustration owing to its control scheme. Ultimately, there’s still a fun career mode to dive into with plenty of content for tennis fans.

That announcement came out of nowhere. The revival of Top Spin, easily the greatest tennis franchise in gaming history, if you don’t count those titles starring Mario. Well, to be fair, Mario Tennis has had more bad games than good ones, so screw it, Top Spin is the best tennis franchise of all time. And it’s back, courtesy of 2K Sports this time around. This is when I started to worry a bit as well.

A new entry in the Topspin series has finally happened after 13 long years. Yet wildly, after all this time Novak Djokovic is still the world’s number one men’s tennis player, just like back then. This fact perfectly encapsulates TopSpin 2K25: the more things change, the more they stay the same. The formula for the game was not broken 13 years ago, so they did not try to fix it. However, the game finds itself lacking in some other areas.

TopSpin 2K25 is an excellent restart of a tenured franchise. While the graphics occasionally dip into Uncanny Valley territory, overall the presentation feels like developer Hangar 13 has paid attention to what makes for a great career mode, while balancing difficulty and accessibility to boot. What it lacks in game modes, it makes up for in game feel and challenge. If this is the start of another multi-year entries, then this bodes well for tennis fans as the series will no doubt be even more impressive in future iterations. If you count yourself amongst tennis fans, you owe it to...

I was very saddened by the fact that after the premiere of Top Spina 4 in 2011, I never got Top Spina 5 (and I waited a whole 13 years). Today I got TopSpin 2K25 and... I don't know what to think about it.

Despite a few mishits, TopSpin 2K25 is well worth the wait. Though this revival doesn’t have a lot of bells and whistles, it gets the fundamentals right. Mastering the new swing meter is challenging, but once you get the timing down, it’s easy to get into the zone and spend hours strategically striking balls on the court without realizing how many hours have passed. The extensive MyCareer mode, while restrictive in spots, rewards consistent play and smart choices over the long run. TopSpin 2K25 is a promising reboot that shows plenty of potential for future entries in the series and...

When it comes to tennis games, there's nothing quite like Top Spin. The series originally created as an Xbox exclusive by PAM Development has historically delivered gameplay of unmatched depth combined with solid licensing and strong online features, making it the tennis game to love for true fans of the sport.

It’s been 13 years since PlayStation fans last got their hands on a digital racquet in the TopSpin series. In that time, we’ve jumped two console generations, and the industry has seen a massive shift towards the live service model. Put together, what does that mean for the series’ return in TopSpin 2K25? Good things, apparently, as Hangar 13 has cooked up a fun, flashy, and addictive tennis title that you’ll enjoy coming to grips with and love mastering.

MyCareer has a “podcast” that rambles on every time you’re in a menu, and it’s terrible. It feels like at most points this game had a shoestring budget, either that or John McEnroe’s “TopSpin Academy” voiceover ate it all up. He’ll walk you through the basics of the sport and it’s a decent tutorial for beginners. The biggest issue I have with the game is how deeply tied any sense of “progression” is to the season pass system. They gave us their super duper fancy $120 version for review, and I think this game shouldn’t cost more than $30. With...

It has a solid back and forth game, but the limited launch roster, treacle-like career mode and steep learning curve means the revived TopSpin doesn’t quite land the ace on its first serve.

On the court, TopSpin 2K25 is brilliant. It's realistic, satisfying, and feels great to play, especially as you get to grips with the timing needed for every shot type. It's just a shame that such good tennis gameplay is housed in such bland modes that have you grind for very little sense of progression.

Top Spin 4 was so good that it continued to thrive for 10 years past its sell-by date, and TopSpin 2K25 feels just as enjoyable to play in 2024. Sure, the character models don't look great, and the game could do with a few tweaks and additions in certain areas, but the key thing is that developer Hangar 13 has nailed the gameplay. We've been waiting such a long time for a tennis title to really grab our attention like Top Spin 4 did back in the day, and we're pleased to say that TopSpin 2K25 is comfortably the best...

There are, again, some limitations here. Some elements of the overall structure add little to the overall quality, such as including stamina and injuries that do little but slow the player down (rather than in EA Sports FC, where it then requires the player to rethink their team lineup or training regime). Such risks can be mitigated with a good home and trainer setup in the game, along with taking part in the quite slow level-up system, and made a little more exasperating by the way that the game's in-game currency can help with either XP boosts or allowing the...
